- Enter the Observatory and find the stairs or access route leading to the maintenance level.
- Follow the maintenance tunnels rather than stopping after checking the public-facing rooms.

- Search Toolboxes and other storage containers throughout the maintenance network.

ShowGamer estimates approximately two to three Steel Cables after a thorough, successful Observatory search. A TheGamer guide republished by KhanList gives the same approximate result. Why the Observatory can be dangerous

Which building to search
At Railyard, concentrate on the large building that houses the trains. Search its storage containers and Toolboxes. The ShowGamer route specifically advises spending less time inside the train cars when Steel Cables are the objective, because those cars tend to contain more residential items and valuables.
A separate MetaForge run report describes finding Steel Cables in Rail Yard lockers during a Hand Drill run. That is evidence that lockers can produce the item on an individual run, not proof that every locker or every visit will contain one.
Locker-room safety checklist

Railyard is often the practical choice when your deployment point makes it substantially closer than the Observatory. Distance, not a promise of a better drop rate, is the reason to prefer it in that situation.

Railroad Junction has a building with frozen doors. The ShowGamer guide recommends opening access and then searching the breachable containers inside. It does not provide a guaranteed Steel Cable yield for this location.

There are three reported ways to clear the ice:
- Fire-based weapons: the guide describes these as a fast method.
- Explosives: also faster, but they consume limited equipment and can create noise that attracts attention.
- Pickaxe strikes: slower, while preserving ammunition and grenades.
Choose the method according to your remaining supplies and how contested the area appears. Spending valuable explosives merely to reach an unguaranteed container is a poor trade when you have already secured enough cables elsewhere.

1. Decide whether the objective is worth a dedicated raid

Compare your spawn with the Observatory, Railyard and Railroad Junction. Do not treat a published route as mandatory. If the Observatory is across the map and Railyard is nearby, the lower travel exposure can outweigh the Observatory’s stronger reported reputation.
3. Approach with an exit already in mind
Before opening the first container, note the direction you would use to disengage. This is general risk management rather than a verified Steel Cable extraction route: no available source establishes a best extraction point, a safe timing window or a cable-specific exit path. Use an exit you know and can reach without improvising through unfamiliar rooms.
4. Search in priority order
