Water on the Moon is real, but it is not one uniform reservoir. The strongest evidence points to water ice trapped in permanently shadowed craters near both poles. Scientists have also detected molecular H2O in sunlit soil at Clavius Crater, while other missions have found broader hydration signals that may represent hydroxyl (OH), water, or hydrated minerals.
Those findings show several forms and settings rather than lakes, rivers, or a confirmed planet-wide supply. A detection establishes that hydrogen, water molecules, ice, or related chemistry is present at a particular place; it does not by itself establish the deposit’s depth, total mass, accessibility, or economic usefulness.

The short answer: three distinct kinds of lunar water evidence
| What is detected | Where it is found | Main evidence | What the result establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Water ice and hydrogen-rich deposits | Permanently shadowed craters and other cold traps near the north and south poles | Lunar Prospector neutron measurements, LCROSS impact ejecta, and Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter observations | Strong evidence that water ice and other volatiles are retained in extremely cold polar terrain; deposit thickness and accessibility vary and are not fully mapped |
| Molecular water (H2O) | Sunlit soil at Clavius Crater in the Moon’s southern hemisphere | SOFIA infrared spectroscopy | A local concentration of 100 to 412 parts per million in the observed soil |
| Hydroxyl or broader hydration | Several sunlit areas across the lunar surface | Earlier infrared and spectral observations, including Chandrayaan-1 results | Hydrogen- and oxygen-bearing chemistry is present, but the measurements could not always distinguish OH from H2O |
In practical terms, lunar water appears mainly as ice in polar cold traps, dilute molecules in sunlit soil, and chemically bound or unresolved hydration in surface materials. The evidence does not demonstrate stable liquid water on the exposed lunar surface.

Why the poles preserve volatile material
Some crater floors and slopes near the lunar poles never receive direct sunlight. The Moon’s low axial tilt allows parts of this terrain to remain in permanent shadow, creating exceptionally cold “cold traps.” Without sunlight to warm them, water molecules and other volatile compounds can remain frozen or otherwise retained for very long periods.

These regions are not open reservoirs. A cold trap may contain patchy deposits mixed with regolith, thin surface coatings, or ice below the top layer of soil. The available observations do not provide a complete map showing the thickness, purity, or mineability of every deposit.
How polar ice was identified
Lunar Prospector’s neutron spectrometer found enhanced hydrogen concentrations at both poles. Neutrons are not a photograph of ice: the instrument measures how hydrogen changes the neutron environment in the upper lunar surface. In permanently shadowed terrain, the pattern is consistent with substantial water ice trapped in the regolith.
Later observations strengthened that interpretation. NASA’s summaries identify water-bearing material in ejecta thrown out by the 2009 LCROSS impact and additional evidence from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. Together, neutron data, impact-ejecta measurements, and orbital observations support the conclusion that polar cold traps contain water ice, rather than merely isolated hydrogen atoms.
What “polar ice” does not mean
- It does not mean the Moon has visible glaciers or a continuous sheet of surface ice.
- It does not provide a single global percentage of soil that is frozen water.
- It does not show that every permanently shadowed crater has the same concentration.
- It does not prove that a particular deposit can be reached, excavated, heated, or processed at acceptable cost.
Those questions require measurements at much finer scales and, ultimately, hardware operating on the ground.
Molecular H2O in sunlit soil at Clavius Crater
What SOFIA detected
In 2020, NASA reported that the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) detected the spectral signature of molecular water at Clavius Crater, a large impact crater in the southern hemisphere. The reported concentration was 100 to 412 parts per million in the observed soil.

That range describes the material sampled by the telescope’s remote-sensing footprint at Clavius. It is not a lunar average and should not be multiplied across the Moon to produce a total inventory. NASA illustrated the concentration as roughly the amount in a 12-ounce bottle distributed through a cubic meter of soil. The comparison helps convey how dilute the signal is; it is not an estimate of a bottle-sized pocket that an astronaut could simply collect.
Why the Clavius result matters
Before this observation, scientists already knew that the lunar surface showed hydration signatures. The Clavius measurement was important because SOFIA’s infrared wavelength allowed researchers to identify molecular H2O specifically in a sunlit location, rather than reporting only an unresolved hydrogen-and-oxygen signal.

Sunlit water also changes the picture of lunar mobility. Molecules in illuminated soil may be created, released, trapped, and redistributed as the surface heats and cools. The observation therefore points to a dynamic near-surface cycle, even though it does not yet reveal how long an individual molecule remains in one place.
Hydroxyl, water, and “hydration” are not interchangeable
The chemical distinction
Hydroxyl (OH) contains one oxygen and one hydrogen atom. Water (H2O) contains two hydrogen atoms bonded to oxygen. Both can produce related spectral features, and both involve hydrogen and oxygen, but hydroxyl is not the same molecule as water ice or free molecular water.
Several early lunar missions, including Chandrayaan-1, detected hydration across sunlit regions. NASA explains that those observations could not always resolve whether the signal came from OH, H2O, or another hydrated material. A headline saying “water found everywhere” can therefore overstate what the instrument actually identified.

How to read a hydration claim
- Hydrogen enhancement: indicates an unusual amount of hydrogen; in a cold trap, water ice is a leading interpretation, but the detector is not directly imaging individual ice grains.
- Hydration signature: indicates hydrogen- and oxygen-bearing chemistry, with OH and H2O potentially mixed together.
- Molecular H2O detection: identifies water molecules at the measured location, as SOFIA did at Clavius.
- Ice detection: refers to water in a frozen physical state, most strongly supported in permanently shadowed polar terrain.
Keeping these terms separate prevents a dilute surface signal from being mistaken for a block of accessible ice.

The observations summarized by NASA concern ice, molecules bound or mixed into soil, and hydration signatures. They do not report lakes, streams, rainfall, or stable pools of liquid water on the exposed surface. Polar cold traps are valuable precisely because their temperatures are low enough to preserve volatiles as frozen or adsorbed material.
A molecule detected in sunlit soil is not automatically liquid. It may be attached to mineral grains, trapped in microscopic pores, or present in a transient surface layer. The Clavius result identifies H2O chemically; it does not say that the crater contains liquid water that flows under ordinary lunar conditions.
How scientists detect lunar water
Neutron measurements
Cosmic rays generate neutrons in the upper lunar surface. Hydrogen absorbs neutrons efficiently, so a neutron spectrometer can identify areas with an excess of hydrogen. Lunar Prospector used this technique to map enhanced hydrogen near both poles. The method is especially informative when the signal coincides with permanently shadowed terrain, where water ice can survive.
Impact-ejecta analysis
LCROSS deliberately struck a permanently shadowed crater and observed the plume of material blasted into sunlight. Instruments analyzed the ejecta for water and other volatiles. This approach samples material from below the immediate surface, helping distinguish a cold-trap deposit from a purely optical surface signature.

Orbital imaging and spectroscopy
The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and other spacecraft examine polar terrain, illumination, temperature, and surface composition from orbit. Infrared spectroscopy identifies absorption features associated with H2O, OH, or hydrated minerals. SOFIA’s high-altitude telescope detected the specific molecular-water feature at Clavius in a sunlit region.
Each method answers a different question. Neutron data reveal hydrogen abundance, impact experiments test the composition of excavated material, and spectroscopy distinguishes chemical signatures. None alone supplies a complete three-dimensional resource map.

NASA’s south-polar mapping work found that measured water concentrations were greater on shadowed sides of craters and mountains. Shading can help retain molecules, much as a shaded terrestrial slope may hold snow longer than a sunlit slope. That comparison describes a pattern of retention; it is not evidence that the Moon has Earth-like snowfall or snowbanks.
The broad distribution pattern is therefore uneven:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Permanent shadow near the poles: the strongest setting for long-lived ice and other trapped volatiles.
- Sunlit crater soil: molecular H2O can occur in dilute concentrations, as measured at Clavius.
- Other illuminated surfaces: hydration signals may represent OH, water, or hydrated material and can vary with local conditions.
Researchers still do not have a definitive Moon-wide total. Remote sensing samples selected wavelengths, depths, and areas; it does not prove that all detected material is recoverable.

Where did lunar water come from?
Solar-wind chemistry
One proposed mechanism begins with hydrogen carried by the solar wind. When that hydrogen interacts with oxygen in lunar minerals, it may form hydroxyl and water molecules in the uppermost soil. This process could help explain hydration on sunlit surfaces and may contribute to the movement of molecules across the regolith.
Impacts and delivery from space
Asteroids and comets can deliver water-bearing material during impacts. Some of that material may migrate toward cold traps, where it is preserved. The available NASA summaries do not establish how much lunar water came from impacts compared with solar-wind reactions.
Movement across the surface
Water molecules may be released when warmed, travel short distances, and become trapped again in colder soil or shadow. NASA’s south-polar report says the age, original source, and migration history of lunar water remain open questions. A polar deposit could contain ancient material, newly delivered material, or a mixture accumulated over many episodes.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Does detection make lunar water a usable resource?
No. Presence and usability are separate engineering questions. A mission would need to know the concentration at the exact landing site, how deeply the material is buried, whether it is ice or chemically bound, how much soil must be processed, and how much energy extraction requires.
Polar operations add practical constraints. Permanently shadowed areas are difficult to illuminate and communicate with, while nearby high points may offer sunlight but not the same volatile concentration. Equipment must work in extreme cold, abrasive dust, low gravity, and terrain that may be permanently dark. A remote measurement cannot settle those issues.
The Clavius concentration illustrates the challenge from the other direction: 100 to 412 parts per million is valuable evidence of molecular water, but it is dilute. Extracting useful quantities would require processing a large amount of soil, and the SOFIA measurement does not establish whether the molecules are recoverable with a practical method.
How to interpret future headlines about lunar water
- Check the chemical term. Look for H2O, OH, hydrogen, ice, or hydration; they are not synonyms.
- Check the physical location. A permanently shadowed polar crater and a sunlit crater floor imply different preservation conditions.
- Check the instrument. Neutron measurements, impact ejecta, and infrared spectroscopy measure different properties.
- Check the scale. A local concentration or selected crater does not represent the whole Moon.
- Check the claim’s scope. Detection does not automatically provide deposit thickness, accessibility, or an economic reserve estimate.
The most defensible statement today is that the Moon contains water-related material in several forms: ice concentrated in polar cold traps, molecular H2O in at least some sunlit soils, and broader OH or hydration signatures across additional areas. Scientists are still determining how much exists, how it moves, and which deposits—if any—can be used by future missions.
