But not every Galaxy phone has a memory card slot, and tray layouts vary by model. Check the markings on your tray and Samsung’s instructions for your exact model before inserting or buying a card.
Find out whether your Galaxy supports a memory card
A SIM tray does not necessarily mean the phone accepts a microSD card. Samsung notes that not all phone models support SD cards, and the maximum supported capacity also varies. Check your exact model and regional variant in Samsung’s support information or user manual before choosing a card.

To identify the model, check the phone’s model information in Settings or on its packaging, then search Samsung support for that model. If you cannot confirm that it supports microSD, do not force a card into an apparent tray opening.
Samsung UK’s SD-card guidance explains that support and capacity are model-dependent.

Where to look for the slot
Phones with a side tray
On many fixed-battery Galaxy phones, the memory card slot is part of a tray on the side. Inspect the tray’s printed symbols to distinguish the microSD position from the SIM position; the exact location and orientation differ between models.
Older phones with a removable back
Some older Galaxy models place the microSD slot under the removable back cover, often beneath the battery. Samsung’s general instructions describe removing the back and battery before sliding the card into its slot. Follow the sequence in your model’s manual rather than assuming every removable-back phone is identical.

Insert a card in a side tray
- Confirm that your exact phone model supports microSD and check its manual for the tray layout.
- Use the ejector pin in the tray’s eject hole and press gently to release the tray. Do not insert the pin into a microphone opening.
- Withdraw the tray and read its symbols to identify the memory-card position and orientation.
- Seat the compatible card as shown. Do not assume the contacts face the same direction on every model.
- Reinsert the tray carefully. If it does not slide in smoothly, remove it and check that the card is seated correctly; do not force it.
Check SIM and memory-card tray limits
Some trays accept a SIM and a microSD card together; hybrid or dual-SIM configurations may require a choice between using a second SIM and a memory card. The arrangement is model- and configuration-specific, so check the tray markings and official instructions for your device.

For example, Samsung Netherlands describes one single-SIM configuration with the SIM in the lower compartment and an optional microSD card in the upper compartment, gold contacts facing down. For the dual-SIM configuration covered on that page, two SIM cards cannot be used at the same time as an SD card. This is an example, not a universal tray layout: Samsung Netherlands’ tray instructions.

Before physically removing a microSD card, unmount it in the phone’s storage settings to help prevent damage or data loss. Samsung’s general instructions describe going through Device maintenance or Device care, then Storage and SD Card, and choosing Unmount. Menu names can differ by software version; use the current storage settings on your phone if the labels have changed.
