On Android, ordinary music files are usually easiest to find in the phone’s Files app, especially under Music or Downloads. Songs saved for offline listening in a streaming service are different: look in that service’s library or Downloads area, because app-managed downloads are not necessarily regular audio files you can browse or play elsewhere.
First, identify what kind of download you have
| What you downloaded | Where to look first | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| An audio file saved to your phone, such as an MP3 | The phone’s Files app; check Music and Downloads | It may appear as a regular audio file, though folder names and visibility can vary by device and app. |
| Offline music saved inside a streaming app | That music app’s library or Downloads section | The download is managed by the app and should not be assumed to be a regular MP3 available to other apps. |
Google Android Help’s general advice for music, movies, and other content downloaded through an app is: “To find that content, go to the app where you downloaded it.”

Find ordinary music files in the Files app
- Open the Files app. Your phone may use Google’s Files app or a file app supplied by its manufacturer; exact steps can differ by device.
- Check Audio or Music. Shared storage commonly uses a
Musicdirectory for audio files. - Check Downloads or Download. Music downloaded from a browser, email, or another app may be in the general download location rather than Music.
- Search by name or file type if your Files app offers search. Try the song title or artist; if you know it, search for an audio extension such as
.mp3.
Android’s developer documentation identifies Music and Download as standard shared-storage locations, but that does not guarantee every phone or app will display a file in exactly the same way.
Find music saved for offline listening
Open the service you used to download the song, then check its library or Downloads area. Offline downloads are generally handled within the service, so not seeing them in the phone’s Files app does not by itself mean the download failed or disappeared.

Spotify’s storage setting on Android
Spotify documents an option to choose an available SD card for storage. In Spotify, go to Settings and privacy > Data-saving and offline > Storage. This is a Spotify-specific setting, not a universal Android location for downloaded music.

Android’s storage rules limit how apps can access files. The Android Open Source Project says that on Android 11 or higher, apps targeting API 30 or higher must use scoped storage. This describes app access, not where a particular music service stores a download; the exact visibility and transfer options depend on the app and device.
- If the song came from a streaming app, check that app before treating it as a missing file.
- If it is supposed to be an ordinary audio file, search the Files app’s Music and Downloads locations.
- If you still cannot find it, check the app or site that originally downloaded it and confirm its download status.
Browse phone files from a computer
To look for regular files on a computer, connect the Android phone to the computer by USB and browse the device’s files. Google’s Android Help describes this method for transferring files. The cable must support data, not only charging; check that its connectors fit both devices. A computer’s Downloads folder is a location on the computer, so browse the phone’s storage and its Download folder instead.
