As of October 6, 2026, Elon Musk’s America PAC had spent $31 million on 2026 races, according to WIRED’s tally of Federal Election Commission filings. Of that, $24.8 million went to seven U.S. Senate contests that WIRED described as close or toss-up races that could shape control of the Senate. The spending leans heavily toward opposition: for every dollar the PAC spent supporting a Republican candidate, it spent more than two dollars opposing a Democrat, and in Senate races the ratio was three to one.
None of this is hidden. It sits in public FEC records, which is why it can be tracked race by race. What takes more care is keeping apart three different kinds of money: what has been spent, what has been raised, and what a group has said it plans to spend. The sections below separate them.

Where the 2026 spending is concentrated
The $31 million figure is a running total of disbursements on 2026 races, dated to October 6. WIRED says its race-level figures are derived from America PAC’s FEC filings and from payments the PAC records for ads, mailers, and texts. Its live tracker, “Elon Musk’s America PAC Is Spending Big on the Midterms. We’re Tracking It Daily” (October 2026), is updated as new filings are processed, so any figure you see there later may differ from the ones below.
| Measure | Figure | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Total spent on 2026 races | $31 million | WIRED, as of October 6, 2026 |
| Spent in seven U.S. Senate contests | $24.8 million | WIRED, as of October 6, 2026; WIRED described the seven races as close or toss-up |
| Opposition vs. support, all races | More than $2 opposing a Democrat for each $1 supporting a Republican | WIRED, as of October 6, 2026 |
| Opposition vs. support, Senate races | 3 to 1 | WIRED, as of October 6, 2026 |

- Opposing James Talarico: more than $9.4 million on ads opposing him.
- Backing Ken Paxton: $1.8 million.
- Largest Texas expenditures: two $1.3 million digital media buys against Talarico. WIRED said the PAC had not bought television ads in that contest.
On WIRED’s two figures alone, the opposition spending in Texas is more than five times the support spending.
Support and opposition: what the ratio measures
The two-to-one and three-to-one ratios describe how the PAC’s disclosed spending is split, not how many candidates it backs. Supporting spending promotes a named candidate; opposing spending attacks one. Both are reported as independent expenditures, which are communications made without coordination with a campaign. They are not direct gifts to a candidate’s campaign. Reading the ratio correctly means seeing that most of the dollars in the 2026 tally are directed against Democratic candidates, and that the PAC’s activity is more than a set of endorsements.
The planned field program: a reported plan, not filed spending
FactCheck.org, in a September 24, 2026 analysis by D’Angelo Gore, described a reported authorization of a $100 million to $120 million field program across at least eight states. That figure comes from a New York Times report citing two people briefed on the plans. It is an authorization, not a record that the money has been spent, and it should not be added to the filed totals above.

The places named as the planned focus were:
| Race type | Locations named in the reporting |
|---|---|
| Senate, named as planned focus | Alaska, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, Ohio |
| Senate, possible activity | North Carolina, Georgia, Texas |
| House, expected | California, Wisconsin, Washington |
Because these are plans reported from people briefed on them, the locations show where the group was reported to be preparing to work, not where it has yet spent money.
Fundraising and the 2024 baseline
Fundraising is measured over a different period from spending, so the two should be read separately. FactCheck.org, citing the FEC filing covering the period through June 30, 2026, reported the following:
| Period | Measure | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cycle to June 30, 2026 | Total raised | More than $50.3 million, almost all from Elon Musk or his company | FactCheck.org, citing the FEC filing |
| Through June 30, 2026 | Independent expenditures supporting federal candidates | About $87,000 | FactCheck.org, citing the FEC filing |
| 2024 cycle | Total spending | $261 million (WIRED); $261.2 million (FactCheck.org) | WIRED and FactCheck.org |
| 2024 cycle | Share of funding from Musk | About 95 percent | WIRED |
The June 30 figures describe a filing snapshot and should not be combined with the October 6 spending totals. A June figure of about $87,000 in support spending and an October figure of $24.8 million in Senate spending come from different reporting periods, and placing them side by side would overstate what the June filing showed.

How to check these numbers yourself
- Open the FEC’s “Browse data” page and find the committee’s summary pages and downloadable files. These include committee and candidate summaries.
- Check each total’s coverage period in the committee’s filed reports before comparing it with any other figure.
- Keep the separate categories apart: receipts, disbursements, cash on hand, contributions, and independent expenditures each answer a different question.
- For each independent expenditure, confirm whether it supports or opposes a named candidate.
- When you use a tracker, record its “as of” date and check it against the underlying filings.
- Treat any figure described as a plan or authorization as separate from filed spending, even when reporting describes it in detail.
The FEC’s guide on looking up PACs, parties, and other committees lists the committee reports, itemized contributions, independent expenditures, enforcement actions, litigation, and advisory opinions that can be checked in the same way.
What the spending figures cannot show
These figures show how money has been spent and in which races. They do not show whether the spending changes votes or affects who wins. A large opposition budget in a close race is a fact about the spending, not evidence of its effect on voters.
Political allies have described the PAC’s role in favorable terms. Axios, in a July 29, 2026 article, quoted James Blair, whom Axios identified as President Trump’s senior political adviser: “America PAC was an essential partner for our historic GOTV operation in 2024, and their return for 2026 is a huge boost for Republicans across the country.” That is an ally’s characterization of the PAC’s contribution, not an independent assessment of its impact. Axios also quoted America PAC spokesperson Andrew Romeo in the same article.
