Where Dolls Hang is a forthcoming survival psychological horror game from solo developer Steelkrill Studio, and its reported real-world connection is Mexico’s Isla de las Muñecas—the Island of the Dolls. GameSpot reports that some in-game doll models are based on real photographs, bringing the game’s unsettling imagery closer to its island inspiration.
What is Where Dolls Hang?
Where Dolls Hang is a survival psychological horror game by Steelkrill Studio, which describes itself as a solo independent developer. Its Steam listing gives 2026 as the release year and describes an investigation through places marked by strange events and hanging dolls.

The listed premise combines exploring dangerous locations, gathering evidence, uncovering secrets, and using a boat to confront the unknown. Steam does not give an exact launch date, so 2026 should be read as a listed release year, not a confirmed day or month.

GameSpot reports that Steelkrill Studio said, “Some of the doll models you’ll find were created using real photographs.” According to the report, photographs also appear in the game. It describes a clip in which a photograph of a dirt-marked doll head is followed by a similar-looking doll head mounted on a pike in the scene. GameSpot’s October 6, 2026 report is the source for this production detail; the Steam listing does not independently describe the photo-based modeling process.

- Easy to Apply & Remove: Just cut out the design, press on clean dry skin, wet the backing for 15–20 seconds, and peel. Removes easily with baby oil or rubbing alcohol. Layer multiple cracks around eyes, cheeks, forehead, or mouth for a fully shattered doll look
- Perfect Halloween Accessory: Ideal finishing touch for broken doll, creepy doll, voodoo doll, haunted doll, zombie, and horror clown costumes. Great for Halloween parties, cosplay conventions, horror photo shoots, haunted attractions, Day of the Dead events, and more
The effect is more specific than simply using dolls as horror props: as GameSpot characterizes it, a real photographed object can inform the appearance of an in-game model. That connection gives the imagery a real-world point of reference without establishing that the objects depicted are from the Mexican island itself.
What is Mexico’s Island of the Dolls?
GameSpot connects the game’s premise to Isla de las Muñecas, commonly called the Island of the Dolls. The report recounts local folklore that dolls hung around the island are associated with the spirit of a drowned girl, and that caretaker Don Julián Santana collected dolls from the water. These are folklore claims as presented in the report, not verified supernatural history.

The game’s reported visual link and island inspiration are related, but they are not the same claim: GameSpot reports real-photo references for some doll models and identifies the island as an inspiration. The available information does not establish that those photographs were taken on Isla de las Muñecas or that every in-game doll is based on a real one.

What is confirmed—and what is not?
- Confirmed on Steam: the game is described as survival psychological horror, with exploration, evidence gathering, secrets, and a boat; the listing gives 2026 as its release year.
- Reported by GameSpot: some doll models were created using real photographs, photographs appear in the game, and the Island of the Dolls is part of the inspiration.
- Not established by these sources: an exact release date, the origin or location of the referenced photographs, or proof that the island’s supernatural folklore is true.
A September 2026 report from CDJuegos also describes real-doll photographs being turned into 3D models and connects the game to Isla de las Muñecas. It is secondary reporting, so the central production claim remains appropriately attributed rather than treated as independently documented by Steam.
