None is automatically acceptable: you must verify sunlight, structural mounting, cable and socket safety, fire access, property permissions and Great Britain’s product requirements before buying.
The three places that can work
1. A sunny terrace or outdoor area
A terrace is often the simplest option because a panel can be positioned in open sunlight without roof access. The UK government says plug-in solar can be installed in outdoor space, and London Fire Brigade lists terraces among possible locations.

Measure the area first. The panel, support frame and cable must not narrow a shared walkway, block a window, obstruct a balcony, or interfere with a fire escape. Keep combustible items such as garden furniture, stored boxes, curtains and dry vegetation away from the panel, inverter, plugs and any battery equipment.

Sunlight matters more than the label “terrace.” A south-facing position may receive more useful light than a shaded space, but nearby walls, railings, trees and neighboring buildings can create long periods of shade. Because the available evidence does not rank terraces against balconies or shed roofs, assess the actual site rather than assuming one location will produce more electricity.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. A shed or outhouse roof
London Fire Brigade identifies shed and outhouse roofs as possible locations. A roof can provide a clear, elevated position, but it introduces structural and weather-exposure questions.
Use only the mounting method, brackets, fixings and accessories approved by the panel manufacturer. Confirm that the roof surface can carry the system and withstand wind, rain and snow for your location. Do not improvise with household screws, ballast or a frame that the instructions do not support.
If the system connects through an outdoor socket, the Brigade recommends an installation rated at least IP65 and fitted by a competent person. The socket, cable entry and connection point should remain protected from standing water and accidental damage. Do not run the cable through a door or window in a way that crushes it, leaves a gap for rain, or creates a trip hazard.
3. A suitable balcony
Some balconies can accommodate plug-in solar, and both the government and London Fire Brigade list balconies as examples. Suitability depends on the balcony’s construction, management rules, access arrangements and the way the panel is mounted.

Do not install a system if it obstructs a shared route, emergency access or an escape path. London Fire Brigade’s property-manager guidance says not to install solar panels on timber balconies or on combustible external wall systems. A balcony attached to a building undergoing, or awaiting, cladding or remediation work should not be used until the work is complete or the responsible parties confirm that installation is appropriate.
Balcony mounting also needs a safe cable route. Keep cables away from sharp edges, moving doors, public areas and places where they can be pulled from the socket. Obtain written permission where a landlord, freeholder or building manager controls the balcony.
Compare the locations before you buy
| Location | Potential advantage | Checks required | Do not proceed when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Terrace or other outdoor space | Flexible positioning and usually straightforward access | Sun and shading, clear walkways and windows, stable mounting, protected cable route and suitable socket | The panel or cable blocks a fire escape, shared route or window, or combustible materials cannot be kept away |
| Shed or outhouse roof | Can provide an unobstructed elevated surface | Manufacturer-approved roof fixings, structural strength, wind exposure, weatherproof cable entry and an outdoor socket installation rated at least IP65 where applicable | The roof cannot accept the approved fixings, the cable would be exposed to damage, or the socket arrangement is improvised |
| Balcony | Useful where it has good sun and a permitted mounting point | Landlord, freeholder and building-management approval; escape-route clearance; balcony construction; combustible-surface restrictions; safe cable routing | It is a timber balcony, uses a combustible external wall system, obstructs access, or the building is in cladding or remediation work without approval |
This is a safety and practicality comparison, not an output ranking. No cited head-to-head test establishes that one of these locations generates more electricity than the others. At a particular property, orientation, shading and the usable hours of sunlight will decide the result.

Confirm the product is compliant
Before paying, check that the exact plug-in solar device meets the applicable UK requirements and the Interim Product Specification. The government says only compliant plug-in solar devices can be sold and plugged in under the intended framework. A generic online listing, a seller’s description or a mark on the packaging is not proof that a specific kit complies.

Ask the seller for the model’s compliance information, installation instructions, electrical ratings and the accessories included in the approved configuration. The specification applies to the complete intended system, so substituting a different inverter, bracket, cable or connector can invalidate the assumptions behind the approval.
Check who controls the property
Homeowners should check whether planning permission or listed-building consent is needed for the proposed installation. Renters should obtain the landlord’s permission before buying. Leaseholders may also need freeholder or managing-agent approval, and apartment residents should check building-management rules for balconies, façades, communal routes and external sockets.
These checks are separate from electrical safety. A system can be technically compliant and still be prohibited by a tenancy agreement, lease, building rule or planning restriction.
Notify the network operator
London Fire Brigade advises notifying the local Distribution Network Operator within 28 days of installation. Keep the model details, installation date and any confirmation or reference number with your household records. The network operator is the organisation responsible for the local electricity distribution network, not your electricity retailer.

Do not add an unapproved battery
The Brigade advises against connecting plug-in panels to batteries for storage. Do not add a battery, extra inverter or energy-management device unless a qualified professional confirms that the complete arrangement is permitted and safe under the applicable rules. A plug-in kit designed to feed a domestic circuit is not automatically suitable for storage equipment.
Safe installation: a step-by-step checklist
- Survey the proposed position. Record shading at different times of day, identify windows and escape routes, and mark where the panel, frame and cable would sit.
- Read the complete manufacturer instructions. Check the permitted orientation, mounting surface, wind exposure, cable length, inverter position and connector arrangement.
- Verify permissions. Obtain landlord, freeholder or building-manager approval where relevant, and check planning or listed-building requirements.
- Check the product specification. Confirm that the exact model is covered by the applicable UK requirements and Interim Product Specification, rather than relying on a generic product claim.
- Use the specified mounting hardware. Install only the brackets, fixings and accessories recommended for that surface. Do not alter the system wiring.
- Arrange electrical work competently. Where a new or modified outdoor socket is needed, use a competent person. London Fire Brigade recommends a minimum IP65-rated outdoor-socket installation.
- Connect without improvised adapters. Do not use extension leads or adaptors, and do not place cables where they can be crushed, cut, tripped over or exposed to avoidable water ingress.
- Inspect before energising. Check that the panel and inverter are secure, ventilation is unobstructed, combustible material is clear, connectors are fully seated and the plug and socket show no damage.
- Complete the notification. Follow the Brigade’s advice to notify the local Distribution Network Operator within 28 days, then retain the product and installation records.
What the latest safety evidence does—and does not—show
The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero published an electrical safety study on 16 June 2026. It tested representative plug-in photovoltaic products in laboratory conditions and simulated UK domestic circuits. The summary states: “The results show that plug‑in PV (photovoltaic) systems can operate safely within the tested conditions, with stable behaviour, effective protective device operation, and no evidence of sustained unsafe energisation or unacceptable thermal effects.”
That conclusion is conditional. The study observed variation between products, particularly in export limitation and electromagnetic compatibility. It does not establish that every product, installation or combination of accessories is safe. Product selection, mounting, socket condition, cable routing and correct use still matter.

The government’s September 2026 response says the Interim Product Specification sets minimum technical and safety requirements and that only compliant devices qualify under the intended approval route. The response records 466 consultation responses, with more than 85% of respondents agreeing with the proposed specification. Those figures describe consultation respondents, not the public as a whole. The government said it intended to proceed with the proposed regulatory changes and refined specification, alongside consumer guidance and further evidence-gathering.

How much electricity and money can one kit provide?
Department for Energy Security and Net Zero figures for 2026 describe a maximum of up to 800 watts per kit. The same material estimates household bill savings of up to £110 a year and says a kit could supply up to 20% of average home electricity use.
All three figures are upper estimates, not guarantees for an individual home. Actual generation depends on panel capacity, orientation, shading, weather, inverter behaviour, household demand and whether electricity is produced when the home can use it. The figures do not tell you which of a terrace, shed roof or balcony will perform best at your address.
Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh described plug-in solar as “a simple, affordable way for households to take control of their energy bills and start saving straight away.” Treat that as a policy description, not a promise of a particular payback period. Calculate your own likely benefit only after confirming the system’s rated output, the installation position and your electricity tariff.
Common reasons a proposed location should be rejected
- Obstructed access: The panel, frame or cable intrudes into a shared path, window area, balcony route or fire escape.
- Combustible construction: The site is a timber balcony or uses a combustible external wall system.
- Unresolved building work: Cladding or remediation is planned or underway and the responsible parties have not approved the installation.
- Unsupported mounting: The surface cannot accept the manufacturer’s approved fixings, or the installer proposes an improvised frame.
- Unsafe power connection: The plan depends on an extension lead, adaptor, damaged socket or an outdoor socket that is not appropriately weather rated.
- Unclear ownership: A renter, leaseholder or apartment resident has not obtained the permissions required by the property arrangements.
- Unverified compliance: The seller cannot identify how the exact model meets the applicable UK requirements and Interim Product Specification.
- Battery add-on: The proposal includes storage equipment even though the Brigade advises not connecting plug-in panels to batteries.
Questions to ask the seller or installer
- What is the exact model and rated output of the complete kit?
- How does this model meet the applicable UK requirements and Interim Product Specification?
- Which mounting surfaces and fixings does the manufacturer approve?
- What clearance is required around the panel, inverter and connectors?
- Is my proposed outdoor socket suitable, and does it meet the recommended IP65 rating?
- Will the installation keep every shared route, window and escape path clear?
- Who will carry out any electrical work, and what records will they provide?
- What notification must be made to the local Distribution Network Operator?
- Does the proposal include any battery, adaptor, extension lead or modified wiring that the instructions prohibit?
Bottom line for each location
Choose a terrace when it offers clear sun, safe ground-level access and an unobstructed cable route. Choose a shed or outhouse roof only when the roof and manufacturer-approved fixings can withstand the exposure and the electrical connection is properly weather protected. Choose a balcony only when its construction, management permissions and escape arrangements allow it; timber balconies and combustible external wall systems are specifically unsuitable under London Fire Brigade guidance.
In every case, buy only a product that meets the applicable Great Britain requirements, follow the manufacturer’s configuration exactly, use competent electrical help where needed, avoid extension leads and adaptors, and complete the recommended network notification.
