Where Are Sony Xperia Phones Made? What Sony’s Sources Actually Confirm

Sony does not publish a model-by-model list showing where Xperia phones are assembled. Its corporate manufacturing-site list names facilities in six countries, but does not identify which ones make Xperia smartphones. Sony says Japan played a central role in Xperia design and development; that does not establish where a finished phone was assembled. To find the origin of a particular unit, check its own label or original packaging.

What Sony’s manufacturing-site list tells you

Sony’s responsible supply chain page lists electronics manufacturing sites in Japan, China, South Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, and the UK. The list, dated August 2026, covers Sony electronics manufacturing overall. It does not assign Xperia phones to a facility or country.

So, while those countries are locations of Sony electronics manufacturing, the list cannot answer whether a specific Xperia model—or every Xperia phone—is made in any one of them.

Does Sony make Xperia phones in Japan?

Sony support says contributors in Sweden, San Francisco, and Japan took part in Xperia development, with Japan playing a central role in design and development. The answer was updated March 11, 2025. It describes the people and places involved in development, not the country where finished phones are assembled. Read Sony’s support answer.

  • Display Type: AMOLED; Width: 3. inches; Length: 6.5 inches; Height: 0.4 inches; Operating System: Android 13.0; Cpu Model Family: others; Connector Type: USB Type C

That distinction matters: a phone can be designed or developed in one country and manufactured in another. Sony’s statement supports Japan’s role in Xperia development, but does not prove that all, or any particular, Xperia models are assembled there.

What Sony’s supply-chain figures do—and do not—show

Sony’s Sustainability Report 2025 says that, as of August 2025, Sony had 11 electronics manufacturing sites across Japan, China, South Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, and the UK. It also reports that mainland China and Hong Kong accounted for 49.9% of Sony Group Corporation’s raw-materials and parts, and OEM/ODM supplier transaction value in FY2024.

The 49.9% figure is company-wide supplier transaction value, not the share of Xperia phones assembled in China or Hong Kong. It cannot be used to determine the manufacturing origin of a phone.

What is known about Xperia 1 VII’s assembly country?

Sony announced the Xperia 1 VII on May 13, 2025. Its product page identifies the handset, and Sony Europe’s launch announcement describes the product and its collaborators. Neither page states the phone’s assembly country.

Android Central reported on May 30, 2025, that Sony appeared to be shifting Xperia production toward third parties, citing changes to Sony factory webpages and reporting by another publication. This is a secondary report about an apparent change—not Sony’s confirmation of a specific contractor, factory, or the origin of every model. Read the report.

How to check where your Xperia was made

  1. Check the phone itself. Look for a country-of-origin marking, such as “Made in …,” on the device or its regulatory/product label.
  2. Check the original box. If the marking is not on the handset, inspect the packaging and its product labels.
  3. Match the exact model and regional SKU. Compare the model identifier on the device or box with the product information for your market. Do not assume that a label on one unit applies to every region or production batch of the same model.
  4. Judge claims by their source and date. A unit’s own marking is more directly relevant to that unit than a corporate site list or a report about a possible production change.

The public sources cited here do not provide a verified table of assembly origins by Xperia model, regional SKU, and production batch. If the phone and packaging do not state an origin, those sources are not enough to establish it.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
