Most screenshots made with Windows + PrtScn are saved as PNG files in %USERPROFILE%PicturesScreenshots. That is not a universal rule: PrtScn and Alt + PrtScn normally copy an image to the clipboard, Windows + Shift + S follows Snipping Tool’s save settings, Xbox Game Bar uses VideosCaptures, and OneDrive may place the Pictures folder under its own directory.
The quickest way to find a Windows screenshot
Open File Explorer with Windows + E, click the address bar, enter the following path, and press Enter:
%USERPROFILE%PicturesScreenshots
Windows expands %USERPROFILE% to your account folder. For example, on a computer signed in as Alex, it may resolve to C:UsersAlexPicturesScreenshots. If the folder is empty or missing, identify the shortcut or app that created the capture and use the matching location below.

Find screenshots made with Snipping Tool
Current Snipping Tool versions for Windows 10 and Windows 11 can automatically save captures. The setting, destination, and available labels can vary between Windows builds, so check the app rather than assuming a fixed folder.
- Open Start and search for Snipping Tool.
- Launch the app and select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Settings.
- Review the automatic screenshot-saving option and the listed Screenshots folder.
- Use the folder-change control, if shown, to select another destination.
After a capture, the editor is a separate thing from the file: the snip can be visible in Snipping Tool and copied to the clipboard without being stored where you expect. In the editor, press Ctrl + S to open the Save dialog and choose a known folder. Ctrl + C copies the image, Alt + N starts another snip using the last mode, and Alt + D sets a one-to-five-second delay. What Windows + Shift + S actually saves
Windows + Shift + S opens an overlay for rectangular, free-form, window, or full-screen captures. The capture is copied to the clipboard, and a notification normally lets you open it in Snipping Tool. Microsoft’s Office guidance describes this clipboard behavior at Copy the window or screen contents.
On current Windows 10 and Windows 11 Snipping Tool releases, automatic saving may also create a file in the configured Screenshots folder. Do not treat that as guaranteed for every older build or every settings combination.

Where Xbox Game Bar puts screenshots
A screenshot made with Windows + Alt + PrtScn belongs to Xbox Game Bar, not the ordinary Pictures folder. Open File Explorer and enter:
%USERPROFILE%VideosCaptures
Game Bar screenshots are PNG files. Game Bar screen recordings are saved in the same folder as MP4 files, as described in Microsoft’s Xbox Game Bar documentation. If Game Bar does not appear, press Windows + G and check that it is enabled in Windows Settings.
Check OneDrive when Pictures is empty
OneDrive folder backup can make your working Pictures directory a synchronized or redirected location. Check both paths:

The exact OneDrive folder name depends on the account and organization setup. These are not necessarily two separate screenshot collections; Windows may be using the OneDrive-backed Pictures folder as the active location. Microsoft says the former dedicated “Save screenshots to OneDrive” switch is no longer available. Screenshots are backed up when the Pictures folder is included in OneDrive folder backup. A cloud-only item may show in File Explorer without being downloaded. OneDrive’s availability icon and Files On-Demand settings determine whether a local copy is present. The active save destination can also be reviewed in OneDrive’s default-location guidance.
Recover a screenshot when you do not know the method
- Search your user folder in File Explorer for
*.png, then sort by Date modified. Windows captures are commonly PNG, but manually saved copies may be JPG or another format. - Repeat the search with
kind:=pictureif Windows Search supports that filter. - Check
Pictures,OneDrivePictures,VideosCaptures, Desktop, and Downloads, sorting each by newest first. - If you may have used a clipboard shortcut, open Paint and press Ctrl + V, then save the result.
- If no image appears, retake the capture, open it in Snipping Tool, press Ctrl + S, and deliberately choose Desktop or another clearly named folder.
Use visual clues to identify the capture method
- A brief screen flash followed by a new file usually indicates Windows + PrtScn.
- A dimmed screen with a selection toolbar indicates Snipping Tool or Windows + Shift + S.
- Game controls or a gaming overlay indicate Xbox Game Bar.
- If the image appeared only after pressing Paste, it was a clipboard capture.
- A Save dialog means the destination was chosen manually and may be anywhere.
Third-party tools such as Steam, Discord, browser extensions, game launchers, and graphics-card overlays use their own folders. The Windows paths in this article apply to built-in Windows capture methods.

Change the save location and prevent future confusion
For Snipping Tool captures, open Snipping Tool > three-dot menu > Settings and review automatic saving and the Screenshots folder control. For clipboard captures, there is no file location until you paste and save. For a manually saved snip, the Save dialog is authoritative. If OneDrive manages Pictures, decide whether you want the synchronized location or a local folder before changing backup settings; moving folders can affect other applications that use Pictures.
Troubleshooting checklist
The Screenshots folder is empty
- You used PrtScn, Alt + PrtScn, or a non-saving Snipping Tool configuration.
- OneDrive owns the Pictures folder.
- You used Game Bar, whose files are under Videos.
- The folder was moved or the capture was saved manually elsewhere.
Retake the image, open it in Snipping Tool, and use Ctrl + S to establish a known destination.
Windows + PrtScn does nothing
Some keyboards place Print Screen behind another key, require Fn, or omit a dedicated key. Laptop layouts differ, so there is no universal Fn combination. Microsoft documents alternative arrangements, including devices that use another key with Windows and Space, in its keyboard guidance. Use Snipping Tool from Start if the hardware shortcut is unavailable.

The capture vanished
A clipboard image is temporary. Paste it into Paint immediately; later copy actions or a restart can replace it.

You are looking at a recording
Game Bar recordings are MP4 files in VideosCaptures; Snipping Tool video snips are separate from still-image captures. Do not search only for PNG files.
