Where Are Bell Helicopters Manufactured? A Guide to Bell’s Global Production Sites

Bell helicopters are manufactured at several specialized sites rather than one factory. Bell identifies aircraft assembly in Mirabel, Quebec; Amarillo, Texas; and Chihuahua, Mexico. Mirabel is the company’s commercial assembly, flight-test, certification and delivery center, while Amarillo has a major military-assembly history and is the planned final-assembly site for the Army’s Future Long Range Assault Aircraft (FLRAA). Bell also makes major structures and systems at facilities in Fort Worth and Grand Prairie, Texas. A separate FLRAA plan calls for fuselage assembly in Wichita, Kansas.

The exact answer depends on what “manufactured” means. Final assembly, component fabrication, engineering, flight testing and customer delivery occur at different locations. Bell’s January 2025 facility chart does not identify a single plant where every helicopter model is built, and it lists Chihuahua as an assembly-category site without assigning a specific model to it.

Bell helicopter manufacturing locations at a glance

Location Function identified by Bell How to interpret the role Status
Mirabel, Quebec, Canada Commercial aircraft assembly and delivery; advanced manufacturing; flight testing; certification Bell’s named center for commercial helicopter production and customer handover Established operation; Bell says aircraft have been assembled there since 1986
Amarillo, Texas, United States Aircraft assembly Important military-program assembly center with a long production history; planned FLRAA final assembly location Established assembly site; FLRAA role announced as a future plan in November 2024
Chihuahua, Mexico Aircraft assembly category on Bell’s global-footprint chart Bell’s chart does not state which model or specific production operation is located there Listed on the January 2025 chart
Fort Worth, Texas, United States Advanced composites and rotor systems; research and development activities Manufactures major structures and systems and supports programs, but is not presented as the main commercial final-assembly center Established manufacturing and engineering location
Grand Prairie, Texas, United States Drive systems Produces or supports drivetrain-related hardware rather than serving as the principal aircraft assembly plant Established manufacturing-related location
Wichita, Kansas, United States Fuselage assembly for FLRAA Program-specific site announced for the future Army aircraft; not a general Bell commercial-helicopter plant Announced FLRAA plan from November 2024

Mirabel, Quebec: Bell’s commercial assembly and delivery center

Mirabel is the clearest answer when the question concerns Bell’s current commercial helicopters. Bell describes the Quebec operation as an integrated commercial assembly and delivery center. Its responsibilities extend beyond putting airframes together: the site has advanced manufacturing capabilities, performs flight testing and certification work, and hands completed aircraft over to customers.

Bell says the Mirabel facility opened in 1986. The first aircraft assembled there was a Bell 206B JetRanger, marking the beginning of Canadian production at the site. That history matters because Mirabel is not a temporary overflow plant or a single-model line; it has been Bell’s Canadian commercial manufacturing base for four decades.

How many aircraft has Mirabel produced?

Bell reported two closely related milestones. On May 12, 2025, Bell Textron Canada announced completion of its 6,000th commercial aircraft built in Canada. In a September 29, 2026 retrospective, Bell said the Mirabel team had produced more than 6,000 aircraft in Canada over the site’s history. These are Bell’s own cumulative company figures, not an independent industry census, and they refer to the Canadian commercial operation rather than all Bell aircraft worldwide.

Bell chief commercial officer Danny Maldonado described the 2025 milestone as evidence of the company’s commitment to manufacturing aircraft for critical missions and contributing to Quebec’s economy. The statement applies to the Canadian operation’s role and should not be read as saying every Bell model is assembled in Mirabel.

What happens at Mirabel besides assembly?

  • Assembly: commercial aircraft are integrated at the facility.
  • Advanced manufacturing: specialized production methods support the aircraft build.
  • Flight testing: completed aircraft undergo flight evaluation before delivery.
  • Certification: the site supports the work needed to approve aircraft for service.
  • Customer delivery: Bell uses the center to hand aircraft to commercial customers.

This combination is why calling Mirabel simply a “factory” understates its role. It is a production, verification and delivery center for Bell’s commercial aviation business.

Amarillo, Texas: military assembly and planned FLRAA final assembly

Amarillo is Bell’s other clearly identified aircraft-assembly center. Bell’s account of the Amarillo Assembly Center says the company selected the city in 1998 as the future home of V-22 final assembly. The V-22 is a military tiltrotor rather than a conventional helicopter, so Amarillo’s history includes more than rotary-wing helicopters in the narrow sense.

Bell also identifies Amarillo as the place where several military helicopter programs were produced historically. Its published history names the OH-58, UH-1Y and AH-1Z. Those references are historical production statements; they do not establish that each of those models remains in active production today.

Amarillo’s announced FLRAA role

On November 6, 2024, Bell announced a manufacturing plan for the U.S. Army’s Future Long Range Assault Aircraft. Under that plan, Amarillo is intended to perform final assembly. Wichita, Kansas, would assemble the aircraft fuselage, while supporting work would be carried out at Texas facilities, including Bell’s Advanced Composite Center in Fort Worth.

Because the announcement describes a future program still progressing through development and production planning, “planned final assembly” is the accurate wording. It does not prove that a completed FLRAA production line was already operating at Amarillo. Program schedules, contracts and site assignments can change, so readers using this information for procurement or industry analysis should check for a later Bell or government update.

Chihuahua, Mexico: an assembly site whose model assignment is not public here

Bell’s January 2025 global-footprint chart places Chihuahua under the aircraft-assembly category. That is enough to establish Chihuahua as part of Bell’s manufacturing footprint, but the chart does not identify a helicopter model, aircraft family or particular production operation associated with the site.

It would therefore be inaccurate to state that a named Bell helicopter is built in Chihuahua without additional documentation. The most defensible description is that Bell lists a Chihuahua assembly location, while the specific model and scope of work are not identified in the cited facility information.

Fort Worth and Grand Prairie: components, systems and engineering rather than one main assembly line

Fort Worth and Grand Prairie are often mentioned because Bell’s corporate and engineering presence is concentrated in North Texas. Bell’s facility chart distinguishes their functions from aircraft assembly.

Fort Worth

Bell lists advanced composites and rotor systems in Fort Worth. The site also supports research and development. Advanced composite work can involve large structural parts and specialized materials, while rotor-system work covers the components that generate lift and control for a rotorcraft. Bell’s FLRAA announcement specifically names the Advanced Composite Center in Fort Worth as part of the Texas support network for the future aircraft.

Grand Prairie

Bell lists drive systems in Grand Prairie. These systems transmit engine power to the rotors and other aircraft mechanisms. A drive-system facility can be essential to a helicopter’s manufacture without being the building where a complete aircraft receives its final assembly, avionics integration, paint and delivery inspection.

For that reason, a statement such as “Bell helicopters are made in Fort Worth” is too broad. Fort Worth and Grand Prairie contribute important hardware and technical work, while Mirabel and Amarillo are the locations Bell explicitly identifies for aircraft assembly in the cited footprint.

How the FLRAA manufacturing plan fits together

FLRAA illustrates why Bell’s production footprint is distributed. The announced arrangement separates major work packages among several states:

  1. Wichita, Kansas: fuselage assembly.
  2. Texas facilities: supporting manufacturing and engineering work, including advanced-composite activity in Fort Worth.
  3. Amarillo, Texas: planned final assembly of the aircraft.

In a conventional description, final assembly is where the major sections, systems, wiring, propulsion equipment, flight controls and mission equipment come together into a complete aircraft. Fuselage assembly is an earlier structural stage, and composite or drive-system work supplies parts that may be installed later. The three locations are therefore complementary, not competing answers to the same question.

Bell’s announcement quoted U.S. Senator Jerry Moran calling the Kansas production decision historic for the “Air Capital of the World.” That quotation reflects the economic and regional significance of the Wichita selection; it does not change the announced division of work between Wichita, Texas and Amarillo.

Commercial helicopters, military helicopters and tiltrotors use different parts of the footprint

“Bell helicopters” can mean several categories of aircraft. Commercial helicopters are associated most directly with Mirabel’s assembly and delivery operation. Military helicopters have a strong Amarillo assembly history, including the UH-1Y and AH-1Z. The V-22 tiltrotor, whose final assembly history is tied to Amarillo, combines helicopter-style vertical takeoff with airplane-like forward flight and should not be treated as an ordinary helicopter model.

Bell’s facilities also support aircraft programs that may not be assembled at the same place where their components are fabricated. Rotor systems, composites, drive systems, research, certification and flight testing can be geographically separate from final assembly. A location answer is therefore more useful when it names the function performed at each site instead of assigning every Bell aircraft to the company’s Fort Worth-area operations.

A short timeline of Bell’s disclosed manufacturing footprint

Date Event What it establishes
1986 Mirabel opens for Bell aircraft manufacturing; the first Canadian-assembled aircraft is a Bell 206B JetRanger Beginning of Bell’s Canadian commercial assembly history
1998 Bell selects Amarillo as the future home of V-22 final assembly Amarillo’s role in a major military tiltrotor program
August 3, 2023 Bell marks 25 years of the Amarillo Assembly Center Historical account of Amarillo production, including named military helicopter programs
November 6, 2024 Bell announces FLRAA site assignments Wichita fuselage assembly, Texas support work and planned Amarillo final assembly
January 2025 Bell’s global-footprint chart lists aircraft assembly in Amarillo, Mirabel and Chihuahua, with separate Texas categories Most recent comprehensive facility classification identified here
May 12, 2025 Bell announces its 6,000th commercial aircraft built in Canada Dated production milestone for the Canadian commercial operation
September 29, 2026 Bell’s Canadian manufacturing retrospective reports more than 6,000 aircraft produced in Canada Updated Bell-published cumulative figure for Mirabel’s history

What the evidence does—and does not—show

  • Bell has multiple assembly locations; no single plant is identified as the home of every Bell helicopter model.
  • Mirabel is the named commercial assembly, testing, certification and delivery center.
  • Amarillo is an aircraft-assembly center with documented military-program history and an announced future FLRAA final-assembly role.
  • Chihuahua appears on Bell’s assembly list, but the cited map does not name its aircraft model or detailed operation.
  • Fort Worth and Grand Prairie are manufacturing-related sites for composites, rotor systems, drive systems and engineering support, not interchangeable with final-assembly centers.
  • Wichita’s role is tied specifically to the announced FLRAA fuselage-assembly plan.

So, the most accurate direct answer is: Bell helicopters and related aircraft are manufactured across Canada, the United States and Mexico. Commercial aircraft are assembled and delivered in Mirabel; Amarillo handles aircraft assembly with a major military history and a planned FLRAA final-assembly role; Chihuahua is listed as an assembly site without a public model assignment in the cited material; and Texas facilities in Fort Worth and Grand Prairie produce major systems and support research and program work. Wichita is a separate, announced FLRAA fuselage-assembly site rather than a general Bell helicopter factory.
