These systems do not all make decisions on their own: many provide information or perform a defined task within a clinician’s or health system’s workflow. FDA authorization applies to a particular medical device and intended use; it is not proof that every AI tool improves outcomes or is appropriate in every setting.
What is AI doing in healthcare now?
Health AI covers more than software that interprets a scan. The World Health Organization describes applications across diagnosis and clinical care, drug development, disease surveillance, outbreak response, and health-systems management. The relevant task, data, users, and setting differ substantially across those areas.

Clinical assessment and monitoring
Some medical-device algorithms analyze images or signals to provide information related to diagnosis or monitoring. FDA examples include software that provides skin-cancer diagnostic information from images, sharpens medical images, detects diabetic retinopathy from retinal images, or estimates heart-attack probability using sensor data. These are examples of intended functions, not evidence by themselves that use of a product improves patient outcomes.

Other systems are designed to support an intervention or treatment function. FDA examples include algorithms that automate insulin dosing using readings from continuous glucose monitors. A treatment-related function should not be assumed to be autonomous: the device’s specific intended use and role in care determine what it does and who is meant to use it.

Work beyond an individual clinical encounter
WHO also identifies drug development, disease surveillance, outbreak response, and health-system management as areas where AI may be applied. These uses can involve different data and decision-makers from clinical devices. They are not all FDA-authorized medical devices, and the FDA device figures below should not be read as a count of all health AI.
What do FDA device counts and data types show?
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s overview reported more than 1,600 AI-enabled medical devices authorized for marketing in the United States as of September 2026. That is a dated count of device marketing authorizations, not a measure of how many are used in routine care or whether they improve outcomes.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Core algorithm input | Devices in the study | Share of 736 unique devices |
|---|---|---|

| Signals | 107 | 14.5% |
| Omics | 5 | 0.7% |
| Tabular electronic health record data | 3 | 0.4% |
These percentages describe the study’s 736 unique devices, not all healthcare AI, all AI research, or worldwide clinical practice. They show that the FDA-authorized AI/ML devices in that study were concentrated in image-based applications; they do not establish that image-based AI is more effective or more widely used in care.

What does FDA authorization mean?
FDA oversight attaches to a product that is a medical device, not to AI as an abstract technology. The FDA puts it plainly: “The FDA does not regulate AI as such; it regulates medical devices, including AI-enabled medical devices.” Its risk-based review considers a device’s intended use and technological characteristics.
There is not one interchangeable route for every device. FDA pathways include 510(k) clearance, De Novo classification, and premarket approval. The agency also reviews some device modifications that could significantly affect safety or effectiveness. The FDA’s public AI-enabled device list describes listed devices as having met applicable premarket requirements, including a focused review of safety and effectiveness in relation to intended use and technological characteristics. The list is periodically updated.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
For that reason, avoid calling every item on the list “FDA approved.” Clearance, De Novo classification, and approval are distinct regulatory pathways. A listing or authorization is a milestone for the device within the relevant regulatory process and intended use—not a blanket endorsement of every possible use, workflow, or patient outcome.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow should a reader judge claims about a health AI tool?
“AI in healthcare” is too broad a category to judge as a single intervention. To understand what a particular tool does and what its evidence can support, ask four questions:
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- What task does it perform? The device taxonomy used by Singh and colleagues distinguishes patient assessment, such as diagnosis or monitoring, from intervention, such as surgery or treatment guidance. A tool that flags information for review is not the same kind of intervention as one that helps direct treatment.
- What data does it use? Inputs may include images, signals, omics, or tabular records. The input type affects what the system can assess; the FDA-device study’s image-heavy profile cannot be generalized to all health AI.
- What is its intended use, and who uses it where? The intended population, user, care setting, and role in the workflow matter. Evidence for one defined use does not automatically establish suitability in a different setting or for a different use.
- What evidence addresses that use? Regulatory review and clinical evidence answer related but different questions. Authorization is not a universal claim of benefit, and examples of intended functions alone do not demonstrate comparative patient outcomes, cost savings, or clinician adoption.
What safeguards matter after development?
AI-enabled devices require attention across their lifecycle, not just at initial development. The FDA emphasizes consideration during development, validation, deployment, monitoring, maintenance, and modification. A change to a device may also be relevant to regulatory review when it could significantly affect safety or effectiveness.
WHO highlights governance, ethical standards, regulation, and equitable access as concerns in developing and adopting AI for health. Its 2023 publication Regulatory considerations on artificial intelligence for health is a resource for stakeholders; WHO explicitly says it is not intended as guidance, a regulatory framework, or policy. WHO’s broader governance discussion and U.S. FDA device authorization address distinct questions, so neither should be mistaken for a complete global rulebook.
Equity is not settled by a device’s technical capability or regulatory status. Responsible evaluation also asks who can access the tool, how it is governed in its setting, and whether the intended use is appropriate for the people and workflow involved.
What the available figures do—and do not—establish
The FDA’s September 2026 count indicates a substantial and growing catalog of authorized AI-enabled medical devices in the United States, while the 2025 taxonomy offers a dated view of what kinds of inputs appeared in a specific set of FDA authorizations. Neither figure, on its own, measures clinical uptake or proves that AI has improved care overall. Conclusions about patient outcomes, costs, adoption, or a specific commercial product require evidence for that particular use and setting.
