Where AI Actually Helps a Tax Firm in 2026—and Where It Still Doesn’t

In 2026, AI can help a tax firm with bounded tasks such as finding and summarizing potentially relevant tax authorities, reviewing documents, organizing planning questions, and preparing first drafts. It does not take responsibility for verifying the law, checking client facts, protecting confidential information, or approving advice and filings. Survey results show that firms are using AI across several workflows, but they do not establish that a particular tool is accurate or will deliver a particular firm a return on investment.

How widely are tax firms using AI?

Recent surveys point to broadening use, but their percentages describe different respondent groups and questions. They should not be added together or treated as a census of tax firms.

Survey and finding What the result does—and does not—show
CPA.com and Blue J’s 2026 survey of more than 1,000 U.S. tax professionals: 60% said they used AI for tax research at least weekly, compared with 33% in the prior-year survey. This is a co-published survey involving a tax technology vendor, not a representative census of all firms. The change is a reported survey comparison, not a measure of adoption at every firm.
In the same CPA.com and Blue J survey, respondents reported AI use in advisory projects (44%), tax planning (40%), compliance research (39%), document analysis (36%), and drafting (35%). These are respondent-reported applications, not independently tested outcomes.
In that survey, 84% agreed AI saves time; 69% anticipated moving to value-based, hybrid, or fixed-fee billing. The time-savings figure is a perception, not a time-and-motion study. The billing figure describes expectations, not a demonstrated market-wide change.
The Journal of Accountancy’s 2026 tax software survey found that 65% reported using AI in tax research and 32% in client communication. Sixteen percent said they had no plans to use AI, compared with 24.3% in the prior-year question. These figures come from a separate survey with different questions and respondents; they are not directly comparable to the CPA.com and Blue J results.
In the same Journal of Accountancy survey, 93% said they did not use technology tools to review returns for potential planning opportunities. This may indicate room to develop services, but does not show that a particular tool or AI workflow is effective.
Thomson Reuters Institute’s 2026 cross-profession survey found 40% said their organizations used generative AI, up from 22% the previous year. Eighteen percent said their organizations tracked ROI, while 40% did not know whether ROI was tracked. The respondents span legal, tax, accounting, risk, fraud, and government. These are not tax-firm-only adoption or ROI figures.
Thomson Reuters Institute’s Future of Professionals 2026 report found that 81% of tax and audit firm professionals regularly used AI in day-to-day workflows; 35% reported using tools their firm had not authorized. It also found 26% would turn down a job without professional-grade AI tools, and 89% of corporate tax clients viewed AI-enabled quality improvements as very important or essential. These are findings attributed to that report, not proof that AI improved quality or that every firm’s staff or clients share these views.
The AICPA PCPS CPA Firm Top Issues Survey, conducted April 20–May 22, 2026, had 629 respondents. Technology/AI change management ranked first for anticipated impact over the next five years across six firm-size groups. The AICPA summary describes different current pressures by firm size; the ranking does not mean every firm faces the same adoption problem.

Taken together, the surveys show reported use and interest, not a guarantee of speed, accuracy, or financial return for an individual practice.

Which tax-firm tasks are a good fit?

AI is most useful when the task is bounded, the inputs can be checked, and a professional can review the output before it affects a client or filing.

Workflow Useful role for AI Practitioner’s check
Tax research Locate potentially relevant authorities, summarize an issue, or organize questions for further research. Open the underlying authority; confirm jurisdiction, effective date, current status, and whether it applies to the facts. An uncited generated answer is not tax authority.
Document intake and analysis Classify documents, extract or summarize information, and flag items for follow-up. Compare extracted details with the original documents and resolve omissions or conflicts before using them.
Drafting Prepare a first draft of a client explanation, internal memo outline, or document request list from verified source material. Check tax statements and citations, and edit for the client’s facts and circumstances before sending or relying on it.
Planning and advisory Organize known facts, surface questions to investigate, and help prepare a draft comparison of possible scenarios. Verify assumptions and law; do not let the system turn uncertain facts into individualized advice without professional judgment.
Client communication and workflow Draft routine status updates or summarize next steps for staff review. Measure whether the workflow improves response times or frees time for client work; reported survey preferences do not establish firm-specific ROI.

These uses align with applications reported in the 2026 CPA.com and Blue J survey and, for research and client communication, the Journal of Accountancy survey. Those reports do not independently benchmark answer accuracy or show that a specific workflow produces better results.

Where does AI still fall short?

The IRS Office of Professional Responsibility’s guidance, dated June 24, 2026, identifies fabricated output, bias, lack of transparency, and risks involving privacy, confidentiality, and data protection. It cautions that client information could be reused or mixed across matters and says tax professionals should carefully review documents created with AI.

  • It can state a tax conclusion that is false or unsupported. Verify statutes, regulations, cases, administrative guidance, calculations, effective dates, and jurisdiction in authoritative sources.
  • It may not show how it reached an answer. A fluent explanation is not proof that the cited authority exists, is current, or supports the conclusion.
  • It cannot establish that the client facts are complete. A practitioner still has to resolve missing, inconsistent, or uncertain information.
  • It does not assume professional responsibility. A qualified human should review client-facing advice, return positions, and filing-related work.
  • Its handling of taxpayer data may create risk. Before entering client information, the firm needs to understand the system’s data terms and controls, including retention, training use, access, and deletion.

How should a firm assess an AI tool or workflow?

Start with a specific task and a permitted-use policy rather than adopting AI as a general goal. Compare real options against the firm’s needs, and assign an owner to oversee staff training and escalation of uncertain or high-impact work. The AICPA’s 2026 survey ranking makes change management a practical part of the decision, not just a software issue.

  • Evidence and traceability: Can reviewers inspect the underlying source documents and see which claims they support?
  • Review and audit trail: Can the firm document source versions, changes, approvals, and corrections?
  • Tax scope: Which federal, state, and local matters, client types, entities, issues, and tax years are covered—and where does coverage stop?
  • Workflow fit: Does it connect to the firm’s actual intake, research, preparation, review, or communication process, or create another silo?
  • Outcome measurement: Establish a baseline and track review time, correction rates, turnaround, staff experience, and client outcomes. Thomson Reuters Institute’s 2026 cross-profession results show that ROI tracking is not yet routine, and reported perceptions alone cannot establish a firm’s return.
  • Tax preparation requirements: Check the relevant tax-year software approval status and required form coverage separately from any assessment of AI features.

Do not assume that a vendor-linked survey or a product’s AI claims amount to a head-to-head evaluation. The cited surveys describe categories of use and reported attitudes; they do not identify a universally best product.

What does IRS e-file approval tell you?

IRS Modernized e-File Assurance Testing is a technical check of software used to prepare electronic returns. According to the IRS, testing uses IRS test returns and checks calculations, XML formatting, transmission, receipt, and rendering. Vendors are not required to support every form and may choose coverage around their clients’ needs.

That status can help a firm confirm that tax-preparation software meets applicable e-file requirements, but it does not certify the quality of AI-generated research or advice, endorse an AI system, or guarantee that the software supports every form the firm needs.

How can a firm tell whether AI is helping?

Measure a defined workflow against its own baseline rather than treating adoption or staff sentiment as proof of value. For example, a firm using AI to summarize intake documents could compare staff review time and correction rates before and after introducing the workflow, while keeping the task and review standard consistent. A firm testing AI for client updates could measure turnaround and staff effort for that specific task. Track the costs of review and correction as well as any time saved, and consider whether the change affects client outcomes. Results from one firm should not be assumed to apply to another.
