When Will Venus Reappear as a Morning or Evening Star After Conjunction?

In the 2026 cycle, Venus reaches inferior conjunction on October 24 and switches from an evening object to a morning object. The first guided observing attempt is November 4, when Venus rises about 85 minutes before the Sun. For many observers, however, mid-November is a more dependable window: look low in the eastern sky 20–30 minutes before sunrise. Venus reaches greatest brilliancy around November 29.

The timing is different after a superior conjunction. Venus then returns to the evening sky, appearing low in the west after sunset once it has moved far enough from the Sun. Your latitude, unobstructed horizon, season and twilight determine the exact first sighting.

The short answer for 2026

Venus is an evening star before its October 24, 2026 inferior conjunction. At inferior conjunction, Venus passes between Earth and the Sun from our viewpoint. It is lost in the Sun’s glare for a period, then emerges on the opposite side of the sky as a morning star.

What “after conjunction” means

Inferior conjunction: the morning-star transition

Inferior conjunction occurs when Venus passes between Earth and the Sun. Around the exact conjunction, Venus lies in nearly the same direction as the Sun and is normally invisible. As it continues along its orbit, it moves into the dawn sky. The interval from inferior conjunction to the next superior conjunction is called Venus’s morning apparition.

For the current cycle, October 24 is the changeover date. Venus does not suddenly become an easy naked-eye object at that instant; it must first gain enough angular distance from the Sun for its rising time and brightness to beat the dawn sky.

Superior conjunction: the evening-star transition

At superior conjunction, Venus passes behind the Sun from Earth’s perspective. Afterward, it moves into the post-sunset sky. The interval from superior conjunction to the next inferior conjunction is the evening apparition.

The 2026 superior conjunction occurred on January 6. Venus began returning as an evening object toward the end of January, visible low in the west after sunset once it had separated sufficiently from the Sun.

When to look for Venus before sunrise in November 2026

November 4: an early attempt

Astronomy magazine’s 2026 observing guide gives November 4 as a date to start trying. On that morning, Venus rises about 85 minutes before the Sun. That long lead time gives the planet an opportunity to clear the horizon while the sky is still dark enough for it to stand out.

This is an observing-guide date rather than a guarantee for every location. You need a level, unobstructed eastern horizon and unusually clear air. If your view is blocked by trees or buildings, Venus may remain hidden even though it is technically above the horizon.

Mid-November: the more dependable general window

EarthSky recommends a more conservative practical window in mid-November. Look toward the east 20–30 minutes before sunrise, keeping Venus close to the horizon. Waiting until the final few minutes before sunrise can make the sky too bright, while looking much earlier can put Venus below your local horizon.

Use a published sunrise time for your location and begin scanning about half an hour before it. The planet’s altitude changes rapidly near the horizon, so a small difference in date or observing site can determine whether you see it.

November 29: greatest brilliancy

Venus reaches greatest brilliancy around November 29, 2026. This is the point in this apparition when its combination of illuminated area, distance and phase makes it especially bright. The planet can still show a thin crescent in a telescope or tripod-mounted binoculars, but its brightness makes it a strong naked-eye target when the horizon is clear.

How to find Venus after inferior conjunction

  1. Choose an eastern viewpoint. Find a location with an unobstructed view down to the horizon. Coastal lookouts, open fields and high ground are useful; a balcony facing east can work if nearby buildings do not block the low sky.
  2. Check the local sunrise time. Plan to arrive before dawn. For a first attempt, begin observing roughly 30 minutes before sunrise; on November 4, the guide timing places Venus about 85 minutes ahead of the Sun.
  3. Scan low in the east. Venus will not be overhead. Start just above the horizon and sweep slowly along the eastern sky. Do not confuse a bright star or aircraft with Venus; Venus remains fixed against the stars while an aircraft moves and blinks.
  4. Use your unaided eyes first. Locate the planet without optical aid before adding binoculars. This keeps the search simple and avoids any temptation to point optics toward the Sun.
  5. Repeat on consecutive mornings. Venus rises earlier and gains separation from the Sun as the apparition develops. If haze defeats one morning, try again two or three days later rather than assuming the planet is absent.

How to see Venus after superior conjunction

The procedure is the mirror image. After a superior conjunction, choose a western horizon and go outside after sunset. Venus will initially be very low and close to the Sun’s setting position. As days pass, it remains above the horizon longer after sunset and becomes easier to identify.

  1. Note your local sunset time and begin looking shortly afterward.
  2. Face west, preferably from a site without trees, buildings or hills blocking the horizon.
  3. Search in the bright twilight zone where the Sun disappeared, but never while the Sun itself is visible through optical equipment.
  4. Return on later evenings; the elongation from the Sun generally increases, improving the viewing opportunity.

The January 6, 2026 superior conjunction illustrates this pattern: Venus was not an evening object immediately, but it entered the evening sky toward the end of January as its separation from the Sun increased.

Why the first sighting date varies

Latitude changes the geometry

Venus’s altitude at a given time depends on your latitude and the planet’s position along the ecliptic. Published charts can show noticeably different visibility for observers near 50° north, 10° north and 30° south. A date that works at one latitude may produce a very low, difficult Venus at another.

Season and ecliptic angle matter

The ecliptic—the path followed by the Sun and planets—meets the horizon at different angles throughout the year. When that angle is shallow, Venus can remain close to the horizon even when it is substantially separated from the Sun. When the angle is steeper, the same separation can place Venus higher and make it easier to see.

Horizon and atmosphere can hide a visible planet

Low-altitude observing passes through more atmosphere. Smoke, humidity, dust and thin cloud reduce contrast, while a ridge or building can remove the critical few degrees above the horizon. A clear sky overhead does not guarantee a clear horizon.

“Visible” has more than one meaning

An astronomical chart may mark Venus as above the horizon, while an observer using unaided eyes may still fail to see it in bright twilight. That is why November 4 is an early attempt date and mid-November a safer broad recommendation. The exact first visibility requires a city or coordinate, a local horizon profile and a chosen definition of “visible.”

How long Venus remains a morning or evening star

Venus follows a synodic cycle of about 584 days from one equivalent solar alignment to the next. A typical morning-star visibility interval lasts about 263 days, with a similar interval for the evening star. These are approximate averages, not fixed guarantees. The planet’s apparent path, the season and the observer’s latitude alter how long it remains practically observable.

An apparition therefore has two different clocks: the orbital clock, which determines the conjunction dates, and the observing clock, which determines when twilight and horizon geometry allow a person to see Venus. The second clock explains why a conjunction date and a first-sighting date are separated by days or weeks.

Using binoculars or a telescope safely

Start with naked-eye observing. Once Venus is located and the Sun is safely below the horizon, tripod-mounted binoculars can reveal its changing crescent phase. A telescope may show the phase more clearly, but magnification does not make daytime alignment safe.

  • Never point binoculars or a telescope at the Sun unless you have verified, front-mounted solar equipment designed for that instrument and know the correct procedure.
  • Do not search for Venus with optics while the Sun is above the horizon or just below a nearby obstruction.
  • Keep the instrument pointed away from the Sun until Venus is identified with your unaided eyes and the sky is safely dark enough for the session.
  • Use a stable tripod for binoculars; hand shake is especially troublesome when Venus is low.

If you cannot see Venus

Confirm the direction and time

For a morning apparition, verify that you are facing east and observing before sunrise. For an evening apparition, face west after sunset. A compass application can help, but check it away from metal railings and electronic interference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Move to a clearer horizon

If Venus should be above the horizon but is missing, relocate rather than increasing optical power. A few metres of elevation or a nearby open space can remove a blocking roofline or tree.

Try again later in the apparition

Venus becomes easier as its angular distance from the Sun grows. Repeat the observation on subsequent mornings or evenings, especially after a day with haze or thin cloud. If the planet is still absent well after the broad window, check the date, your latitude and the local sunrise or sunset time.

What to remember

  • October 24, 2026 is the inferior conjunction that moves Venus from the evening sky to the morning sky.
  • November 4 is an early guide date; mid-November is a more generally reliable period for looking east before sunrise.
  • Greatest brilliancy occurs around November 29, when Venus should be exceptionally bright despite its thin crescent phase.
  • After a superior conjunction, Venus returns as an evening star in the west after sunset; January 6, 2026 was the relevant conjunction in this cycle.
  • Your latitude, season, horizon and atmospheric clarity determine the first successful sighting.
