When to Use Elemental, Magnify, and Synergy Materia in Final Fantasy 7 Remake

Use Elemental when you want weapon attacks to carry an elemental property or armor to resist a known element. Use Magnify to spread one linked spell across several targets, accepting lower potency. Use Synergy on a supporting ally so that it follows the controlled character’s attack command with a linked spell, provided the ally has enough MP and ATB.

Which support materia solves which problem?

Elemental, Magnify, and Synergy are all blue support materia, but they change different parts of combat. Elemental modifies equipment and the attacks or defenses that equipment provides. Magnify modifies a spell’s reach. Synergy changes who initiates a spell and when it is cast.

Materia Main job What you must link Main limitation Best use
Elemental Add an elemental property to weapon attacks or provide elemental armor defense Elemental plus a second elemental magic materia in a linked weapon or armor slot Consumes a linked equipment slot; the chosen spell determines the element Exploit a known enemy weakness or prepare for a known elemental attack
Magnify Expand a linked spell’s target range Magnify plus a spell materia in a linked slot Expanded spells lose effect according to Magnify’s rank Heal or protect multiple allies, or attack a group with one cast
Synergy Have an ally automatically follow an attack command with magic Synergy plus one of its supported elemental spells The ally needs MP and ATB; the consulted guide reports the first-rank spell only Add a follow-up spell while you directly control another party member

The practical choice is therefore situational: choose Elemental before a matchup where an element matters, Magnify when coverage matters more than maximum single-target power, and Synergy when you want a second character contributing magic without switching control for every cast.

When to use Elemental materia

How the weapon link works

Place Elemental in a linked weapon slot and connect it to an elemental magic materia. The pair adds that linked element to the weapon’s attacks. This is the offensive setup: use it when ordinary weapon commands should carry the element represented by the connected magic materia. It is especially useful when you know an enemy is vulnerable to that element and want repeated attack commands to take advantage of the matchup.

The link is essential. Elemental by itself does not select an element, and an unlinked copy cannot borrow a spell from a separate slot. The magic materia in the other half of the link supplies the element.

How the armor link works

Put the same pairing in a linked armor slot instead of a weapon slot to turn Elemental into elemental protection. The linked magic materia identifies the element your armor addresses. This is the defensive choice for encounters in which a particular elemental attack is a predictable threat.

Guide-reported progression from PowerPyx describes three defensive stages: the first level halves damage from the linked element, the second prevents that elemental damage, and the third absorbs it. These are guide figures rather than independently tested measurements, so treat them as the published progression for planning equipment.

What the weapon bonuses are

PowerPyx lists weapon damage bonuses of 8%, 15%, and 23% as Elemental levels up. Those percentages describe the guide’s reported weapon effect; they are not a universal promise that every attack, enemy resistance, or situation will produce the same practical damage increase. The element still has to be relevant to the target for the pairing to be worth a slot.

A reliable Elemental setup

  1. Identify the element you want to attack with or defend against.
  2. Equip Elemental in a weapon or armor slot that is visibly linked to another materia slot.
  3. Place the matching elemental magic materia in the linked slot.
  4. For offense, use the weapon on the character issuing the attacks. For defense, equip the armor on the character most exposed to the incoming elemental damage.
  5. Recheck the pairing when changing equipment; moving either materia to an unlinked slot removes the interaction.

Do not use Elemental merely because a slot is available. It costs a linked equipment opportunity, so it is strongest when the encounter supplies a clear elemental reason to spend that slot. If no relevant weakness or incoming elemental attack is known, a different support pairing may provide more consistent value.

When to use Magnify materia

What Magnify changes

Magnify broadens the target range of the spell materia linked to it. One cast can therefore reach multiple allies or multiple enemies instead of remaining single-target. The trade-off is reduced effect when the spell is expanded. Gamer Guides reports reductions of 60%, 45%, and 25% at Magnify’s three ranks.

Magnify rank Guide-reported reduction when expanded Effect remaining after that reduction Practical reading
Rank 1 60% 40% Use only when reaching several targets is more important than potency
Rank 2 45% 55% A middle ground for routine group healing, defense, or damage
Rank 3 25% 75% Much less costly when you need broad coverage regularly

The “effect remaining” column is the direct arithmetic consequence of the guide’s reduction figures. It explains why a Magnified spell can feel weak against one target while still being efficient across a party or crowd.

Good Magnify pairings

  • Healing: Link Magnify to Healing when several party members need recovery and one cast is preferable to separate single-target casts.
  • Barrier: Link it to Barrier when you want defensive coverage for multiple allies rather than maximum protection on one character.
  • Elemental attack spells: Link it to an elemental spell when enemies are grouped and hitting several targets outweighs the potency loss.

Choose single-target casting instead when only one character or enemy matters, when the target needs the strongest possible effect, or when the rank-based reduction would force an additional cast. Magnify is a coverage tool, not a universal upgrade to every spell.

How to configure Magnify

  1. Equip Magnify in a linked materia slot.
  2. Place the spell you want to expand in the slot connected to Magnify.
  3. Confirm whether the upcoming fight rewards breadth: several allies needing the same help or a group of enemies that can be reached together.
  4. Use the spell normally; the linked configuration determines whether it can cover multiple targets.
  5. For a single priority target, select the single-target option when available so you do not pay the expanded-effect penalty unnecessarily.

Magnify’s value rises as more valid targets are present. A weakened spell applied to three allies can save more actions and MP than three separate casts, while a weakened spell used on one target simply gives up potency.

How Synergy materia works

The trigger is an attack command

Synergy is an automatic follow-up system. Equip it on a supporting party member and link it to a compatible spell. When you control another character and issue an attack command, the equipped ally follows with the linked spell if the ally has enough MP and ATB.

This does not make the controlled character cast for free, and it is not a command to force an ally to act regardless of resources. The ally must be available, must have the required MP and ATB, and must be equipped with the linked setup. Think of Synergy as a conditional response to your attack command.

Supported spells and the rank limitation

The consulted Synergy guide lists Fire, Ice, Lightning, Wind, and Poison as supported linked materia. It also reports that the follow-up uses the first-rank spell. That limitation matters when planning a build: leveling the linked spell may still improve its ordinary use, but the guide’s stated Synergy behavior is specifically the first-rank version.

When Synergy is better than direct control

  • Use it when you want to keep control of a melee or otherwise command-focused character while a mage-like ally contributes automatic elemental pressure.
  • Use it to add another source of a relevant element without spending your own command on every cast.
  • Use it in encounters where you can maintain the ally’s MP and ATB and expect to issue frequent attack commands.

Synergy is less attractive when the supporting ally is short on MP, cannot build ATB reliably, or needs to reserve resources for a manually selected spell. It also offers less control than directly choosing a spell and target, because the follow-up depends on the trigger and the guide-reported first-rank behavior.

How to set up Synergy

  1. Equip Synergy on the party member you want to act as the support caster.
  2. Link it to one supported spell: Fire, Ice, Lightning, Wind, or Poison.
  3. Keep that ally in the active party and monitor MP and ATB during the encounter.
  4. Switch control to the character whose attack commands should trigger the follow-up.
  5. Issue the attack command and allow the ally to perform the linked spell if the resource conditions are met.

If nothing happens, check the link first, then the spell category, then the ally’s MP and ATB. A valid-looking materia arrangement cannot bypass those conditions.

Where to find each materia in Final Fantasy 7 Remake

Materia Location or requirement Qualification
Elemental Chapter 6, Plate Mid-Level, Section H, around Sun Lamp 3 The first copy is placed there; a second conditional opportunity occurs in Chapter 14
Elemental (second opportunity) Chapter 14 after completing all side quests and collecting the Guardian Angel letter The Chapter 14 copy is conditional
Magnify Chapter 9, Collapsed Expressway, second puzzle It is found during that puzzle sequence
Synergy Chapter 8, purchased from Chadley after Battle Intel reports 6–9 Complete the specified reports before the purchase becomes available

These chapter placements and requirements come from specialist guides rather than an official Square Enix reference. For the second Elemental, the GameSpot guide clarifies that the Chapter 9 side-quest sets are not required for that later opportunity; the relevant condition is completing all side quests through the point where the letter appears in Chapter 14. See the Elemental location guide for that qualification. The broader chapter summaries are also listed in the materia guide from Android Central.

A decision process for building your loadout

1. Start with the encounter’s problem

Ask whether the fight is primarily about an elemental weakness, incoming elemental damage, target volume, or maintaining pressure while you control one character. Those answers map directly to Elemental, Elemental on armor, Magnify, and Synergy respectively.

2. Check the equipment link before choosing the spell

Elemental and Magnify both require a linked equipment slot, and Synergy requires a linked spell pairing. If the weapon, armor, or accessory arrangement does not provide the necessary link, the intended effect cannot occur. Rearrange equipment before changing materia levels.

3. Decide whether potency or coverage is the scarce resource

Magnify trades potency for reach. If one target needs maximum healing, defense, or damage, keep the spell single-target. If several valid targets can benefit at once, the reduced effect may still be the more efficient option.

4. For Synergy, budget the ally’s resources

Synergy only pays off when the supporting ally can repeatedly meet its MP and ATB requirements. If those resources are being consumed elsewhere, direct casting or another support materia may be more dependable.

5. Reconfigure between chapters and bosses

These materia are encounter-sensitive. An Elemental link aimed at the wrong element wastes the equipment slot; Magnify is inefficient against a lone priority target; and Synergy loses value when the support ally cannot trigger consistently. Save a general setup, then create a specialized version when the next fight’s element, group size, or resource demands are clear.

Common mistakes and fixes

  • Elemental is equipped but attacks are unchanged: verify that it is linked to an elemental magic materia on the weapon. An unlinked copy has no element to apply.
  • Elemental defense is not working: move the linked pair to armor, and make sure the connected magic materia represents the element you expect to receive.
  • Magnify feels dramatically weaker: check its rank and whether the spell is being expanded. The guide-reported reduction is largest at the first rank.
  • Magnify is wasting casts: use a single-target spell when only one ally or enemy needs the effect.
  • Synergy never triggers: confirm the linked spell is Fire, Ice, Lightning, Wind, or Poison, then check the supporting ally’s MP and ATB.
  • Synergy’s damage is lower than expected: the consulted guide reports a first-rank follow-up spell, so do not assume the automatic cast uses a higher-rank version.

Bottom line: match the materia to the job

Elemental is the specialist for elemental offense and defense: link it to a magic materia on a weapon to add an element, or on armor to progress from halved damage toward prevention and absorption as it levels. Magnify is the coverage choice: it reaches multiple targets, but its guide-reported reductions of 60%, 45%, and 25% make single-target casting preferable when potency matters most. Synergy is the automation choice: equip it on an ally, link a supported spell, and let that ally follow your attack command when MP and ATB allow it.
