Remove them only after persistent cold, snow and ice have passed and temperatures are consistently warm. The calendar is a planning aid, not a universal changeover rule: route elevation, overnight lows, road conditions, tire condition and local law all matter.
Transport Canada summarizes the temperature cue this way: “At temperatures below 7°C, all-season and summer tires begin to lose elasticity, leading to less traction.” That does not mean grip changes abruptly at exactly 7°C, nor does it replace a jurisdiction’s legal dates.

When should you install winter tires?
Use a sustained-weather approach rather than waiting for the first storm. Book installation when your regular driving conditions are approaching or falling below 7°C, especially on morning and overnight trips. Transport Canada says summer and all-season tires begin to lose elasticity below 7°C, while winter tires remain flexible and provide grip at much lower temperatures. See Transport Canada’s winter-tire guidance.
Install before snow or ice is forecast for the routes you actually drive. A driver in a cold inland area may need winter tires weeks before a coastal driver at the same latitude. Mountain passes, shaded roads and higher elevations can become icy while city roads remain clear, so plan around the coldest part of your normal journey rather than the daytime temperature at home.

Use 7°C as a planning cue, not a switch
- Look for repeated mornings near or below 7°C, not one unusually cold day.
- Consider overnight lows, because roads can remain cold after an afternoon warm-up.
- Allow extra time for an appointment before the first widespread snowfall; demand rises sharply after the first storm.
- Follow the vehicle owner’s manual and the tire maker’s fitment requirements if they differ from a general rule of thumb.
The 7°C guidance describes typical compound behavior. It is not a universal legal trigger, a guarantee of a particular stopping distance, or proof that every winter tire performs identically.
When can you remove winter tires?
Remove winter tires after winter risk has passed and conditions on your regular routes are consistently warm. Colorado’s transportation department advises removing them at winter’s end or when weather becomes consistently warm. Its guidance is available at the Colorado Department of Transportation winter-driving FAQ.
Do not change solely because the calendar says spring. Late freezes, snow or ice can return after several mild weeks. Québec’s government recommends waiting a few weeks after March 15 before installing summer or all-season tires because spring conditions vary. That advice is separate from Québec’s legal period and should not be treated as a rule for other regions.
A practical removal test
- Your normal routes no longer have a reasonable chance of persistent snow, ice or freezing conditions.
- Morning and overnight temperatures are staying comfortably above the cold-weather range for your area.
- You have checked the extended forecast rather than only the next warm day.
- Your local authority permits the change for your vehicle and road conditions.
If you still regularly travel to higher elevations or remote roads, keep winter tires until those routes are reliably clear, even if urban temperatures have warmed.
Legal dates are local, not universal
Temperature advice helps with performance; legal requirements determine what you must do in a particular jurisdiction. Rules can vary by vehicle category, approved markings and whether winter road conditions exist. The following examples illustrate why a date from one place cannot be copied elsewhere.
| Jurisdiction | Requirement or guidance | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Québec | Most vehicles registered in the province must have winter tires from December 1 through March 15, inclusive. | Exceptions apply. The government recommends waiting a few weeks after March 15 before fitting summer or all-season tires. Check the current rules at Québec’s winter-tire requirements page. |
| Sweden | For specified light vehicles, winter tires or equivalent equipment are required from December 1 through March 31 when winter road conditions exist. | Winter conditions mean snow, ice, slush or frost on any part of the road; police determine whether conditions apply on a given road. Heavy vehicles have separate requirements. See Transportstyrelsen’s winter-tire rules. |
These examples do not establish a universal December-to-March season. Before changing tires, consult your local transport or road-safety authority and check whether your vehicle type, tire marking or current road condition changes the rule.

Choose a complete, compatible winter set
Fit four matching winter tires rather than putting winter tires on only the drive axle. Transport Canada recommends the same type, size, speed rating and load index on all four wheels, as required by the vehicle and tire specifications. Mixing types or mismatching characteristics can make the vehicle less stable, particularly during braking or cornering. Confirm the specifications in the owner’s manual, the vehicle placard and the tire manufacturer’s fitment information.
Look for the severe-snow marking
For severe snow conditions, look for the 3-peak mountain snowflake symbol. Transport Canada identifies this marking as indicating tires that meet specific snow-traction performance requirements. The symbol is a useful selection check, but it does not eliminate the need to choose the correct size, load index, speed rating and construction for your vehicle.
Do not confuse labels with condition
A tire labeled “winter” is not automatically safe after years of use. Inspect tread, sidewalls and any signs of damage at every seasonal change. Condition, pressure and correct matching affect safety as much as the seasonal category.
Check tread depth before installation
Measure tread across the tire, not at a single convenient spot. Uneven wear can leave one shoulder or section substantially lower than the rest. Transport Canada says not to use winter tires with less than 4 mm of tread on snow-covered roads. Québec recommends at least 4.8 mm for winter use. These are source-specific guidance figures, not interchangeable legal standards; verify the rule that applies where you drive.
| Figure | What it means | Attribution |
|---|---|---|
| Below 7°C | Summer and all-season tires begin to lose elasticity and traction; use this as a planning cue for changeover. | Transport Canada, page modified October 6, 2025 |
| 4 mm | Do not use tires below this tread depth on snow-covered roads. | Transport Canada, page modified October 6, 2025 |
| 4.8 mm or more | Recommended winter tread depth in Québec’s guidance. | Gouvernement du Québec, accessed October 13, 2026 |
A tread-depth gauge is inexpensive and useful, but it cannot identify every structural problem. Replace a tire if it has bulges, exposed cords, serious cuts, persistent pressure loss or other damage, and ask a qualified tire professional when the condition is uncertain.

Set pressure correctly in cold weather
Check pressure when the tires are cold, before driving or after the vehicle has been parked long enough to cool. Cold air lowers pressure, so a reading taken in a warm garage may not represent pressure outdoors. Inflate to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended pressure, not the maximum pressure molded on the tire sidewall. Recheck after the vehicle has spent time outside in colder conditions.

After the wheels are fitted
- Verify that directional tires point in the rotation direction marked on their sidewalls.
- Confirm that wheel fasteners are tightened according to the vehicle manufacturer’s specification.
- Drive a short distance, then check for vibration, pulling, rubbing or unusual noise.
- Confirm that the tire-pressure monitoring system reports normally where fitted; follow the owner’s manual if a reset or relearn procedure is required.
Vehicle-specific procedures take priority. A Tesla Model X owner’s manual, for example, includes model-specific winter-tire information and cautions about warm-weather use; other vehicles may have different requirements. The manual is available through the NHTSA-hosted copy at the Model X owner’s manual PDF.
Step-by-step seasonal changeover
Before installing winter tires
- Check the forecast and your routes for recurring temperatures near or below 7°C, snow and ice risk.
- Confirm the legal requirements for your jurisdiction and vehicle category.
- Verify that all four tires match the vehicle’s required type, size, speed rating and load index.
- Inspect tread depth across each tire and look for sidewall or tread damage.
- Check the 3-peak mountain snowflake marking if severe-snow performance is required for your conditions.
- Make an appointment early enough to avoid the first-storm rush, or prepare the correct tools and follow the vehicle manual if changing wheels yourself.
At installation
- Have the tires mounted in the correct direction and position.
- Set cold pressure to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended value.
- Check that the pressure-monitoring system is functioning or complete its specified reset.
- Inspect for clearance problems and confirm that no warning light or unusual vibration appears on a cautious initial drive.
Before removing winter tires
- Review the longer-range forecast for late snow, freezing rain and overnight freezes.
- Check that your local legal period or road-condition rule allows the change.
- Inspect the summer or all-season set for tread, damage, pressure and correct fitment.
- Schedule removal only when your regular routes are consistently warm and winter hazards have passed.
Store the off-season set properly
Transportstyrelsen advises storing tires in a cold, dry and dark place. Before storage, clean off obvious road grime, inspect for damage and label each tire by wheel position if that will help you rotate it appropriately next season. Keep tires away from conditions the tire manufacturer warns against, including heat, direct sunlight, moisture and chemicals.
Storage methods depend on the tire construction and whether the tires remain mounted on wheels. Follow the tire maker’s instructions for stacking, hanging or bagging; official guidance does not establish one procedure that is correct for every tire and storage system. Keep a record of the storage date, tread measurement and any repair or pressure issue so the next inspection starts with useful information.

Winter tires are designed for cold conditions, so leaving them on after persistent warm weather creates trade-offs. A Tesla Model X owner’s manual notes that winter tires can have shorter tread life and less traction on dry roads. That is a vehicle-manufacturer example, not a quantified result that applies identically to every tire or vehicle.
| Decision factor | Winter set in cold weather | Summer or all-season set in warm weather |
|---|---|---|
| Cold flexibility | Winter compounds remain flexible at lower temperatures. | Summer and all-season compounds begin losing elasticity below 7°C, according to Transport Canada. |
| Snow and ice | A properly marked and maintained winter tire is designed for stronger snow traction than a non-winter tire. | Performance depends on the tire; do not assume an all-season tire equals a severe-snow-rated winter tire. |
| Warm, dry roads | May wear faster and provide less dry-road traction, as noted in the Model X manual. | Usually the more appropriate seasonal choice once cold-weather risk has passed. |
| Compliance | May be required during a local legal period or winter road condition. | May be allowed only after the applicable period or conditions end. |
Do not promise that winter tires prevent crashes. They are one part of a safety system that also includes appropriate speed, following distance, visibility, vehicle condition and sound judgment when roads are hazardous.
Common timing mistakes and how to avoid them
Waiting for the first snow
The first storm can arrive before an appointment is available, and a commute on cold, wet roads can already challenge a summer or all-season compound. Schedule around repeated cold temperatures and likely travel, not the first visible snowfall.

Removing on a fixed spring date
A warm week does not prove that winter is over. Check overnight temperatures, route elevation and local advice. Québec’s recommendation to wait a few weeks after March 15 demonstrates why a legal end date and a practical weather date are different questions.
Installing only two winter tires
Two winter tires can create an imbalance in grip between axles. Transport Canada recommends a matched set of four with consistent specifications.
Ignoring pressure after a temperature change
Pressure can fall as air cools. Check cold pressure after installation and again when outdoor temperatures change substantially.
Using tread depth as the only inspection
A tire can have acceptable tread and still have a bulge, cut, uneven wear or age-related problem. Inspect the entire tire and seek professional assessment when damage is visible.
A simple decision framework
- Start with law: identify the dates, markings, vehicle categories and winter-condition rules where you drive.
- Check conditions: compare recurring temperatures, overnight lows, snow and ice risk on your actual routes.
- Check the tires: confirm four matching tires, correct specifications, adequate tread and no damage.
- Check the vehicle: use the owner’s manual for pressure, monitoring-system resets, directional mounting and any wheel restrictions.
- Change at the right time: install before regular cold-weather travel begins; remove only after persistent winter risk has passed and warm conditions are established.
For official references, consult Transport Canada, your local transport authority and the tire and vehicle manufacturers. Their instructions control when a general rule of thumb conflicts with a vehicle-specific or jurisdiction-specific requirement.
