Trade or drop only after weighing the likely absence against your league format, roster depth, and the value of holding him.
Make the decision in this order
- Check his status and your lineup lock. Determine whether he is expected to play and whether your league uses daily or weekly lineup changes.
- Check fantasy injury-slot eligibility. An NHL injury designation and your fantasy platform’s IR eligibility are separate things.
- Compare replacement options. Look for a player with a credible path to useful deployment and check him against the best available waiver option.
- Price the roster spot. If you cannot use an IR slot, decide whether holding the injured player is worth passing up the best available contributor.
- Choose hold, trade, or drop. Base the decision on expected absence, replacement value, and whether future value matters in your league.
When should you bench an injured player?
Bench a player who is unavailable or unlikely to contribute rather than leave him in an active slot. The exact impact depends on your league’s lineup rules. Yahoo’s guidance says active players earn fantasy points while bench and other inactive-slot players do not; in leagues configured for daily changes, Yahoo says a player can be moved until his scheduled game starts. Check your league’s platform and custom settings rather than applying that timing universally. Yahoo roster-management help

Before a game day, check the player’s status, your lineup-change frequency, and the scheduled lock time. A weekly lineup lock can make an early decision harder to reverse than a daily lineup, while an active slot left occupied by a player who does not play may cost you that slot’s potential contribution.
When to use a fantasy IR slot
Move a player to an injured-reserve slot only when he meets your league’s eligibility rules. Those rules belong to the fantasy platform or commissioner settings; they are not determined automatically by NHL roster status.

NHL Injured Reserve is not the same as fantasy IR
NHL guidance permits a club to place a player on Injured Reserve when he is unable to perform hockey duties. A player placed there must be unable to play for at least seven days and is ineligible to compete in NHL games for at least seven days. This is a roster rule, not an estimate of how long an injury will take to heal or a guarantee about fantasy eligibility. NHL Hockey Operations Guidelines
Verify the fantasy platform’s eligibility
Yahoo’s published default fantasy settings list two IR slots requiring a player to be on real-life IR, but a custom league may differ. Check your league’s current roster settings and the player’s actual status before moving him. Yahoo default fantasy hockey settings

Start with players who could gain a larger role because of the injury, including a teammate moving up the depth chart. Then compare that candidate with the best available waiver option. NHL.com fantasy guidance recommends looking for a player who can take on similar usage and fantasy production; neither a teammate nor a replacement is guaranteed to do so.
| What to compare | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Role and usage | Is the player likely to move up the depth chart or receive meaningfully more deployment? |
| Scoring fit | Will his production help the categories or points settings your league actually uses? |
| Availability | Is he on waivers, and can you add him under your league’s transaction rules? |
| Schedule and timing | Does he have games in the scoring window, and can you put him in your lineup before those games lock? |
| Opportunity cost | Can you use an open bench or IR slot, or must you drop someone to make the add? |
| League horizon | Is this a redraft, keeper, or dynasty league, and does the player’s longer-term value justify holding him? |
Do not add a player solely because he is on the injured player’s team. A role change is only useful if the player is available, fits your scoring, and can contribute during the relevant period.

There is no universal number of games to wait. The right choice depends on how long the absence may last, what you can add instead, whether an IR slot is available, and the injured player’s value in your league.

Consider holding
Holding is easier to justify when the player’s future contribution matters, your roster has room, or your league rewards long-term assets. It becomes harder when IR is unavailable or full and a useful waiver player is going unused.

Consider trading
A trade can make sense when another manager values the player’s longer-term or keeper value more than you do, and the return addresses an immediate need. Compare the offer with what you could gain by keeping the roster spot and adding a waiver player.
Best Value
Consider dropping
Dropping may be the practical choice when the absence is lengthy or uncertain, the roster spot is scarce, and an available replacement is expected to contribute more to your team. Avoid treating any specific absence length as a universal drop threshold; league depth, scoring, and future-value rules change the calculation.
Quick Recap
Check these league settings before making a move
- Lineup frequency and locks: Confirm whether changes are daily or weekly and when each player’s game locks.
- Injury-slot rules: Check which statuses qualify, how many IR slots exist, and whether a player must be on NHL IR.
- Transactions: Review add limits and any rules that affect when a waiver claim or free-agent pickup takes effect.
- Scoring and roster needs: Evaluate replacements using your league’s categories or point values and positional requirements.
- Format: In keeper and dynasty leagues, weigh future value; in redraft leagues, focus on the current season’s roster opportunity cost.
