Use a symbolic link when you want multiple paths to reach one maintained file or directory and you can keep the target path valid. Copy the file when the destination needs its own contents, must continue working if the original is moved or deleted, or must be self-contained for delivery or backup.
The practical choice depends on independence, path stability, operating-system behavior, and security. A symlink stores a pathname; a copy stores another set of file contents.

What a symbolic link actually does
A symbolic link, or symlink, is a filesystem object whose content is a pathname. When an application opens the link, the operating system resolves that pathname and accesses the target file or directory. The link does not contain an independent copy of the target’s bytes.

That shared-target behavior is the main reason to use a symlink: you can expose one maintained object at several paths without creating competing versions. A relative symlink can be useful when the linked directory tree is intended to move together; Windows documentation recognizes both relative and absolute link targets.
When a symbolic link is the better choice
You need one source of truth at several paths
Use a symlink when a program, script, or user needs a file at a particular path but you want to maintain the contents elsewhere. This is common for a shared configuration, a current release directory, a generated asset directory, or a compatibility path retained for an older application.
Changing the target then changes what every resolving path sees. You avoid manually synchronizing several copies and reduce the chance that one copy is forgotten.
The destination should track the target automatically
A copy is a snapshot at the moment it is made. Later edits to the source do not automatically update the destination. A symlink continues to resolve to the target pathname, so later reads normally see the target’s current contents.
This is useful only when that coupling is wanted. If different consumers need to edit their own versions, a symlink creates the wrong relationship because an edit through one path changes the shared target.
You are presenting a directory in another location
Symlinks can refer to directories as well as files. A directory link lets an application use an expected directory path while the maintained tree lives elsewhere. Relative links can keep a relationship portable within a directory tree: if the parent tree moves as a unit and the relative target remains valid, the link can continue to resolve.
Do not assume that moving only the target, or moving the link without its intended relative context, will preserve the relationship. The stored pathname still has to resolve from the link’s location.

You can tolerate dependence on a pathname
A symlink is appropriate when the target location is controlled and stable enough for the lifetime of the link. This might be a managed directory layout where renames are coordinated with link updates. It is not appropriate when users routinely reorganize the original files and the reference must survive those changes automatically.
When copying is safer or more useful
The destination needs independent contents
Choose a copy for an independent working version, a point-in-time snapshot, or a file that recipients must be able to use without access to the original location. Once copied, the destination has its own contents. You can edit it without changing the source.
That independence also means divergence: after either side changes, the two files can differ. If you need synchronization, use a deliberate synchronization or version-control process rather than expecting a copy to follow the source.
The original may move, be renamed, or be removed
A symlink stores a pathname, not a promise that the target object will remain at that pathname. Moving or renaming the target can leave the link pointing at a path that no longer exists. Removing the target has the same result. A broken link does not turn into a copy and cannot recover the removed data.
Copy instead when the destination must remain usable after the source path changes, or when you are handing files to another system, user, archive, or deployment environment that will not contain the original path.
You need a self-contained package
Distributions, portable project bundles, and offline working sets generally need real files at the destination. A package containing only links may fail when extracted on another machine, when the target tree is absent, or when the extraction tool handles links differently.
For backups and archives, decide explicitly whether you want a snapshot of target contents or preservation of link objects. The correct result depends on the backup or archive program’s link policy; verify it rather than assuming.

Symlink versus copy: the decision factors

The hard-link column is intentionally Linux-specific. A hard link is not a synonym for a symbolic link: it refers to the underlying file object, has directory and filesystem restrictions, and does not use a pathname in the same way.

What happens if you move or delete the target?
Moving or renaming the target
If a symlink contains an absolute target such as /srv/data/report.csv and that file moves to /srv/archive/report.csv, the link still names the old path. If the old path no longer resolves, applications see a dangling symlink. A relative link can survive a move of the whole related directory tree when the relative relationship remains unchanged, but it will not automatically track an arbitrary rename.
Deleting the target
Deleting the target removes the object the link was meant to reach. The symlink object may remain as a dangling entry. It contains no backup data, so recreating or repairing it requires restoring the target or changing the link to a valid pathname.
Deleting the link path
Deleting a path that points to a symbolic link is different from deleting the target. Microsoft documents that deleting such a path deletes the symbolic link itself, not the target. Always confirm whether a tool is operating on the link object or following it before using a recursive delete or cleanup command.
How to create the relationship
Linux and macOS
The usual command-line form is:
ln -s TARGET LINK_NAMEFor an absolute target:
ln -s /srv/app/config.json /home/alex/app/config.jsonFor a relative relationship inside a tree:
ln -s ../shared/assets public/assetsIn each example, the final argument is the path users or programs will open, and the first argument is the stored target pathname. Check the result with the operating system’s directory-listing or file-status tool before relying on it. A relative link is interpreted relative to the directory containing the link, not relative to your current shell directory after creation.

Windows
Microsoft’s mklink command creates symbolic links. The basic syntax for a file link is:
mklink Link TargetFor a directory link, use:
mklink /D Link TargetThese commands apply to Windows 10, Windows 11, and the Windows Server versions listed in Microsoft’s documentation. Use a path form that matches your intended deployment: an absolute target is explicit but tied to one location, while a relative target can travel with a directory tree when its relationship stays intact.

Do not substitute a Windows shortcut file for a filesystem symlink without checking the application. A .lnk shortcut is a shell object; command-line tools and applications that understand filesystem links may not treat it as a transparent file or directory path.
File-operation behavior is tool-specific
Creating a symlink is only half of the decision. The next operation—copying, archiving, deleting, scanning, or deploying—may follow the link, preserve the link object, or reject it.

The ordinary CopyFile operation copies the target when the source is a symbolic link. CopyFileEx can copy the symbolic link itself when the COPY_FILE_COPY_SYMLINK option is specified. Those are different outputs: one produces a regular copy of the target’s contents, while the other preserves a link object.
Before running a bulk operation, check its documented link option and test with a harmless sample. The same source tree can produce different results depending on whether the tool follows links, preserves them, or treats a dangling link as an error.
Security: links can redirect an operation
In security-sensitive software, following a symlink can redirect a read or write to an unexpected object. This matters especially for temporary files, upload directories, extraction routines, and privileged services that operate on paths an attacker can influence.

That example comes from Apple’s secure-coding guidance on race conditions and secure file operations. The practical lesson is to decide deliberately whether a program should follow links, validate that the resolved path is allowed, and use safe file-creation and file-opening APIs appropriate to the threat model. Checking a path and using it later can still be unsafe if an attacker can replace a path component between those operations.
For ordinary personal file organization, this is usually a matter of understanding what a command will follow. For privileged or multi-user code, make link handling an explicit security requirement rather than an incidental filesystem behavior.
Common failure modes and fixes
The link is dangling
Symptom: opening the link reports that the file or directory does not exist, even though the link entry is visible. Cause: the target was moved, renamed, deleted, or addressed with the wrong relative path. Fix: restore the target at the expected path or recreate the link with the correct target. If the destination must survive future moves, replace the link with a copy.
An application sees a link but refuses to use it
Some applications, libraries, backup tools, and archive formats intentionally refuse links or treat them specially. Read that tool’s documentation and select its follow-versus-preserve option if available. If the consumer cannot accept links, provide a real copy.
A copy unexpectedly contains the target data
On Windows, this is the documented behavior of ordinary CopyFile when the source is a symbolic link. If you intended to preserve the link object, use an API and option that explicitly copies the symbolic link, such as CopyFileEx with COPY_FILE_COPY_SYMLINK.
A relative link works in one location but not another
Relative targets depend on the link’s own directory. Moving just the link, changing the surrounding directory layout, or reconstructing only part of a tree can invalidate the relationship. Keep the linked tree together, or use an absolute target when portability within a tree is less important than an unambiguous fixed location.
A cleanup command removed the wrong thing
Confirm whether the command deletes the link entry or follows it. Windows documents that deleting a path to a symbolic link deletes the link, not its target, but other operations and tools have their own rules. Avoid destructive recursive commands until you have verified behavior on a test directory.
A practical decision checklist
Choose a symbolic link when all of these statements are true:

- You want several paths to reach one maintained file or directory.
- Changes should be visible through every resolving path.
- The target pathname is controlled and can remain valid, or you can update the link when the layout changes.
- The applications and file tools involved are known to handle symbolic links correctly.
- Following the link does not create an unacceptable security risk.
Choose a copy when any of these statements is true:
- The destination needs independent contents or an independent working version.
- The destination must work after the original is moved, renamed, or removed.
- You are distributing or archiving a self-contained set of files.
- The receiving tool or platform does not support the link type.
- Following a user-controlled or untrusted link could redirect a sensitive operation.
If neither choice is quite right, evaluate a hard link only for a regular file when Linux’s directory and same-filesystem constraints fit. It still shares the underlying file object, so it is not an independent copy and is not a replacement for a symlink to a directory.
