When Should You Update a Driver, Roll It Back, or Reinstall It?

Use the symptom and its timing to choose the action. Start with Windows Update for an ordinary compatibility or feature fix. Roll back when a device started failing immediately after a recent driver update and Windows still has an older version. Reinstall when the driver is missing or corrupted, or Device Manager reports a problem whose prescribed remedy is reinstalling. These are troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed cures; the correct choice depends on the specific device, Windows version and error.

The decision in one view

The three actions change different things. Updating replaces a working or outdated driver with a newer compatible release. Rolling back returns to the previous driver that was installed on that PC. Reinstalling removes the device’s current installation and lets Windows build it again, or lets you provide a fresh package.

Situation First action What must be true Where the replacement comes from
No specific recent change; hardware needs a compatibility, bug or feature fix Update A compatible newer driver is available Windows Update first; otherwise the device manufacturer’s official support page
The device worked, then failed after a recent driver update Roll back A previous driver version is still stored; you have administrator rights The prior version shown by Device Manager
Driver is missing or corrupted, or an applicable Device Manager error calls for reinstall Reinstall You can safely remove the device entry and let Windows rediscover it, or have a compatible driver ready Windows after restart, Windows Update, or the manufacturer’s official package
Company-managed computers Use staged deployment and support procedures Fleet policy may not provide an end-user rollback IT-approved driver rings and packages

Microsoft’s official guidance says, “The best way to get driver updates in Windows is automatically using Windows Update.” That recommendation covers normal driver maintenance, not every failure scenario. A sudden regression after an update is a different case from a device that has never installed correctly.

When updating is the right first move

Choose update for a general compatibility or bug problem

Update when you do not have evidence that a particular recent driver caused the fault. Typical examples include a newly connected peripheral that is not recognized, a feature that Windows reports as unavailable, or a manufacturer release that specifically addresses your model and Windows edition. Updating is also the normal maintenance route when the existing driver is functional but old.

For Windows 10 and Windows 11, begin with Windows Update rather than a third-party driver catalog. Windows Update can deliver drivers automatically, and optional driver updates may be listed separately. The available selection depends on the Windows release, hardware and update policies.

Check through Windows Update

  1. Save your work and connect the PC to reliable power and internet.
  2. Open Settings and go to Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates. Install offered driver updates, then restart if Windows requests it.
  4. Look under the optional-update area for optional driver updates when your Windows build presents that category. Install only a driver that matches the affected hardware.

Windows Update’s automatic delivery is the preferred route because it evaluates the package for your Windows installation. It does not mean every newest manufacturer release will be offered immediately.

Use Device Manager when you need to identify one device

Device Manager is useful for confirming the exact hardware and its status. Right-click Start, choose Device Manager, expand the relevant category, right-click the device and select Update driver, then choose Search automatically for drivers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is an important version detail: starting with Windows 10 version 2004, Device Manager’s Search automatically choice searches the local computer first. If it does not find a newer driver, follow the Windows Update link shown in the dialog and check Windows Update, including optional driver updates where available. Do not assume that this button directly searches Microsoft’s online catalog on every Windows version; the route varies by release. Microsoft documents the distribution behavior in its Windows driver distribution rules.

Install manually only from the manufacturer

If Windows Update does not provide the needed fix, download the driver from the device manufacturer’s official support website. Identify the exact model, hardware revision when listed, Windows edition and system architecture (for example, 64-bit) before downloading. Microsoft cautions against driver downloads from other websites; an apparently newer package can be mismatched, modified or bundled with unwanted software.

Read the manufacturer’s release notes for prerequisites, firmware requirements and whether the installer replaces an existing package. Create a restore point before a major graphics, storage or chipset change when your organization’s policy allows it. If the installer fails, keep the error text and return to Device Manager to inspect the device status rather than repeatedly installing unrelated packages.

When to roll a driver back

The timing test

Rollback is the targeted response when the device worked before a recent driver update and began failing afterward. The closer the timing, the stronger the case: sound disappears immediately after Windows Update, a display starts flickering after a graphics package, or a network adapter loses connectivity after its driver changed. Microsoft’s audio guidance uses this exact before-and-after test, but the logic applies to other hardware as well.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rollback is not a general way to obtain an older driver. Device Manager shows Roll Back Driver only when a previous version remains available. You also need administrator permission. If the button is missing or disabled, Windows has no usable prior package recorded through that interface; choose another diagnostic path rather than forcing a rollback.

Roll back in Device Manager

  1. Save work and sign in with an administrator account, or obtain administrator approval.
  2. Right-click Start, select Device Manager, and expand the category containing the failing device.
  3. Right-click the device, choose Properties, and open the Driver tab.
  4. Select Roll Back Driver. Choose a reason if Windows asks, then confirm.
  5. Restart Windows when prompted, even if the device appears to recover immediately.
  6. Test the original workload: play audio, reconnect the network, attach the peripheral or run the application that exposed the problem.

If the failure remains after rollback, the update may not be the cause, or another component may have changed at the same time. Check Device Manager’s error code, Windows Update history and the manufacturer’s support notes before trying a different driver.

Why rollback may not solve the problem

  • The prior driver is no longer present, so the command is unavailable.
  • The fault is caused by firmware, a damaged cable, power management, an application or Windows itself rather than the driver.
  • A security or compatibility requirement makes the older driver unsuitable.
  • The device has multiple coordinated drivers, and reverting only one leaves the stack inconsistent.

Do not keep an unstable older driver indefinitely without checking whether the manufacturer or Microsoft has issued a corrected release. Once a compatible fix is available, updating may be safer than remaining on a vulnerable or unsupported version.

When reinstalling is appropriate

Use reinstall for missing or corrupted driver installations

Reinstall when Windows cannot load the driver, the device entry is missing or damaged, or Device Manager displays an error whose documented remedy is to reinstall. Microsoft specifically identifies reinstalling as a remedy for codes such as Code 18 (“Reinstall the drivers for this device”) and Code 39 (Windows cannot load the device driver). Other codes prescribe different actions, so do not treat every yellow warning icon as a reinstall case. Consult Microsoft’s Device Manager error-code guidance for the exact code.

Let Windows reinstall after removing the device

  1. Save work and close applications that use the device.
  2. Open Device Manager, expand the relevant category, right-click the device and choose Uninstall device.
  3. Read the confirmation dialog carefully. If it offers a checkbox to remove the driver package, do not select it unless you have a replacement package and specifically intend to remove that package.
  4. Confirm the uninstall, then restart the PC. Windows will attempt to detect the hardware and reinstall its driver.
  5. After sign-in, open Device Manager again. If the device still has an error, use Update driver and the Windows Update route, or install the matching package from the manufacturer.

Microsoft’s general sequence is to save work, close apps, uninstall the device and restart. Some hardware, including certain printers, may require a manufacturer-specific reinstall utility or a manual package instead of automatic rediscovery.

Uninstalling a device is not the same as deleting its driver package

Removing the device entry tells Windows to forget that installation; an attached device may be rediscovered immediately or at the next restart. Deleting the driver package is a more destructive operation. It can leave the hardware without a matching driver and unable to function. Microsoft recommends physically unplugging a device before uninstalling it when permanent removal is intended. Create a restore point before package-removal work and keep a known-compatible replacement driver available. Microsoft explains this distinction in Using Device Manager to Uninstall Devices and Driver Packages.

A practical troubleshooting sequence

When the symptom is unclear, use this order to avoid changing several variables at once:

  1. Record the symptom and timing. Note what stopped working, when it began and whether Windows Update or a manufacturer installer ran beforehand.
  2. Inspect the device. In Device Manager, identify the exact model and read the Device status message and numeric error code.
  3. Check simple causes. Reconnect the cable, verify power and test another port when appropriate. A driver change cannot repair a disconnected device.
  4. Choose the action. No recent driver change usually means update; a clear regression after an update points to rollback; missing, corrupted or reinstall-specific errors point to reinstall.
  5. Change one thing. Restart and test the original failure after each action so you know which change affected the result.
  6. Escalate with evidence. If the action fails, preserve the error code, driver version, Windows build and steps already tried for the manufacturer or IT support team.

Driver operations are conditional troubleshooting, not guarantees. A persistent error can indicate hardware failure, firmware incompatibility, a Windows component problem or a software conflict.

Audio is a useful example, not a universal rule

Suppose speakers worked yesterday and stopped directly after Windows Update. Open the audio device’s properties in Device Manager and check whether Roll Back Driver is available; that timing makes rollback a reasonable first driver action. Microsoft’s audio guidance also includes updating, uninstalling and reinstalling, trying the generic Windows audio driver, or installing the manufacturer’s driver depending on what the checks reveal. Follow the branch that matches the symptom rather than applying every option.

If audio never worked after a clean installation, rollback has no historical basis. Start with Windows Update and the computer or audio-device manufacturer’s compatible package, then investigate mute settings, output selection and hardware connections. The same timing distinction applies to graphics, Bluetooth, storage and network devices.

What changes on business-managed PCs

Individual Device Manager rollback and enterprise driver policy are not equivalent. Microsoft’s driver-policy FAQ, dated September 2, 2026, states that Windows Update client policies do not currently support driver rollback for managed deployments. IT teams should deploy updates in rings: a small pilot group first, followed by broader groups after compatibility is checked. If a fleet-wide regression appears, contact IT rather than uninstalling packages independently; the organization may need to pause a deployment, redeploy an approved package or use its management system to recover.

Safety checks before you change a driver

  • Confirm the hardware model and Windows architecture before a manual download.
  • Use Windows Update or the manufacturer’s official support page, not an unverified driver-download site.
  • Save work and close programs that use the device before uninstalling it.
  • Keep a network connection or offline replacement package available, especially before changing a network adapter driver.
  • Record the current driver version and error code so you can compare the result.
  • Do not delete a driver package casually; removal can strand the device without a usable driver.

The shortest reliable rule is: update for a normal compatibility need, roll back for a new regression after an update, and reinstall for a missing, corrupted or reinstall-specific device error. If the evidence does not fit one of those patterns, diagnose the device status and error code before changing drivers again.
