Start a backup wide receiver when his expected role gives him a credible path to targets and his likely contribution compares well with your other eligible players under your league’s scoring rules. A teammate’s absence can open the door, but it does not guarantee the backup will play enough or see enough passes to be a good start.
Check the backup’s actual opportunity
Begin with the role, not the depth-chart label. Look for evidence that the receiver is expected to play meaningful snaps and run routes, such as a reported promotion, a teammate’s absence, or a sustained change in usage. A nominal promotion matters less if the player is still unlikely to be on the field often.

Then ask whether the offense has a plausible way to get him the ball. Targets are a useful signal for receivers in both standard and PPR scoring, as NFL Fantasy explains in its scoring discussion. An uncertain increase in playing time without a reasonable target path is a weak case for starting him.
Compare him with your real lineup alternatives
Do not decide in isolation or start someone just because a familiar starter is unavailable. Compare the backup with the other wide receivers and flex-eligible players you can actually use, applying your league’s scoring and lineup settings. NFL.com notes that only points from players in the starting lineup count toward the weekly score; points scored by a benched player do not help your team that week (beginner’s guide to fantasy football).

Reception scoring can change the comparison: catches add value in PPR leagues, while they do not add points in standard non-PPR formats. NFL Fantasy’s article reports a historical comparison—not a current-season forecast—in which WR25–WR36 averaged 2.3 more PPR points per game than RB25–RB36 over the preceding six seasons described there; in non-PPR, RB25–RB36 averaged 0.4 more points per game than WR25–WR36. The article does not identify the years in that sample, so use the figures only as historical context, not as a projection for this week or a rule for your lineup (NFL Fantasy).
Weigh weekly context without letting matchup labels decide
Quarterback availability, a receiver’s reported limitations, and the opponent can all affect expectations. Consider them alongside the likely role and target volume: a favorable matchup cannot make up for a receiver who may barely play, and a difficult matchup does not automatically erase a dependable role. NFL.com’s weekly fantasy coverage addresses start/sit decisions in the context of injuries and quarterback situations. Because those details change week to week, current advice is more useful than a stale ranking.

If your team needs a steadier result, favor the candidate with the more secure role and clearer workload. If you need upside, a less certain backup may be worth the risk when his potential opportunity is substantial. There is no universal snap, route, or target threshold that makes every backup a start; the right comparison depends on your alternatives, scoring, and team situation.
Recheck news and lineup rules before kickoff
Late updates can change both a backup’s opportunity and your available alternatives. Check current player news and weekly rankings, then verify your league platform’s lineup lock and substitution rules. Kickoff locks apply under the settings described in NFL.com’s guide, but exact deadlines depend on the platform and league (NFL.com).
