That usually means securing or denying an objective, winning a coordinated fight, forcing the enemy to retreat, escaping a losing position, or making a rotation materially safer. Hold it when you cannot name the benefit, the teammates needed to capitalize are unavailable, the opponent can simply disengage, or a stronger and predictable timing window is close.
There is no universal “use it on cooldown” rule or magic win-rate threshold. Ultimate systems differ between tactical shooters, hero shooters, battle royales and loadout-based games, so the right decision depends on urgency, coordination, counterplay, replacement cost and the next realistic opportunity.

The five-second test before you press the button
Ask yourself one question: What changes because I spend this resource right now? A good answer names an event and an outcome, such as “we take the site before the defenders regroup,” “we deny the capture for the final seconds,” or “I survive this crossfire and reach cover.” “It might help” is not a plan.
Use this short test when the decision is unclear:
- Trigger: Identify the immediate event that makes the resource valuable: an objective contest, an enemy ultimate, a choke point, a rotation, or a survival threat.
- Conversion: State the measurable gain you expect: space, a pick, denied progress, a safe escape, or a favorable next fight.
- Coordination: Confirm that the players who must capitalize are alive, close enough, and aware of the plan.
- Counterplay: Consider whether opponents can disengage, cleanse, block, hide, or wait out the effect.
- Economy: In a round-based game, compare the cost of losing the resource now with the value of carrying it into another round or buy.
- Next window: If you hold, identify the specific upcoming event you are saving for and how likely it is to occur before the round, fight or charge is lost.
If you cannot answer the conversion question, holding is normally better than spending on hope.

Spend now when the opportunity is perishable
Securing or denying an objective
Objective progress creates a clock that the enemy cannot always pause. A defensive ultimate that keeps opponents off a capture point for the final seconds can be worth more than a larger-looking play later, because the current win condition is about to expire. Conversely, an attacking ability that clears the last defenders from a site can justify a seemingly expensive spend when the plant, capture or payload movement follows immediately.
Do not spend merely because enemies are near the objective. Spend when the effect changes the contest: it blocks the angle that stops the capture, removes the defender who can stall, or gives your team enough protected time to finish. If the opponent has already abandoned the area and no progress remains to protect, the same resource may have little immediate conversion.
Starting a prepared team fight
A team fight is a good window when your squad has a clear entry, follow-up damage and a way to survive the counterattack. Call the plan before activating: who enters, which target is focused, and what happens if the first target escapes. A crowd-control, damage-amplification or area-denial effect is strongest when teammates are in position to act during its short duration.

Do not open with a team ultimate while two teammates are still rotating, reloading or returning from spawn. The ability may expire before anyone can use the space it creates. Waiting a few seconds for synchronized arrivals often produces more value than surprising the enemy early.
Preventing an otherwise losing fight
Use a defensive resource when it changes survival odds, not only when a teammate is already down. A shield, invulnerability window, healing field or escape tool can preserve the numbers needed to contest the next objective. The correct trigger might be an enemy damage combination, a trapped position or a forced crossfire that ordinary movement cannot solve.

There is a difference between escaping and delaying defeat. An escape is valuable when it gets you to cover, preserves your loadout and reconnects you with the squad. Activating a defensive ability after you are already isolated in open ground may only postpone elimination; activate while a route to safety is still available.
Capitalizing on an enemy commitment
Opponents often reveal a temporary weakness by using their own ultimate, missing a key control ability, or overextending for a pick. Your resource is worth spending when their counterplay is unavailable and your team can reach the exposed target. Track what the enemy has already shown, not just what you hope they have used.
Hold when there is no reliable conversion
Your team cannot follow up
Dead, split or uninformed teammates reduce the value of almost every team-oriented resource. A solo player can still spend for survival or a guaranteed pick, but should not activate a coordinated effect on the assumption that distant allies will notice in time. If the resource requires several players and fewer than that are ready, wait or change the plan to a self-contained use.
The opponent can disengage or wait it out
Large visual effects are not automatically strong. If enemies have a safe retreat, a cleanse, a barrier, vertical escape or simply enough time to hide, they may give up a few meters and return after the effect ends. Spend only when the map, objective or your positioning prevents that reset, or when forcing the retreat itself creates the advantage you need.
A stronger, predictable window is close
Holding is rational when you are about to reach a planned site hit, choke, rotation, buy breakpoint or final objective phase. The future window must be concrete, not an abstract “next fight.” Estimate whether the round or charge will survive until then; a resource that expires with the round, is lost on death or cannot be carried to the next phase should not be hoarded indefinitely.

You cannot state the benefit
If pressing the button would only make the screen look busy, keep it. Uncertainty is itself information: spend after a trigger appears, such as an enemy caught in a narrow corridor or a teammate ready to swing, rather than trying to manufacture value from an empty situation.
How the decision changes by FPS type
Tactical shooters
In a tactical shooter, ultimates and abilities compete with information, denial, angle control and round economy. Riot describes the genre around “information gathering and denial, coordinated squad movement, methodical clearing of angles, and the use of abilities to gain an upper hand.” That means the best spend often makes a site or choke safe to clear, denies a defuse or plant, or forces defenders out of an angle your rifles can then occupy.
Check your economy before committing. On a low-buy round, an ultimate that converts a weak weapon situation into a plant, a save opportunity or meaningful damage can be valuable even if it does not win the round. On a full buy with a planned execute, preserving the resource for the coordinated hit may be superior. Riot also frames competitive integrity as an outcome decided by players’ planning and execution; treat the ability as part of the plan rather than a panic button.
- Spend: to break a crossfire, deny the defuse during its timing window, secure a plant, or gather information that prevents a costly clear.
- Hold: when the team is still making noise elsewhere, the spike or objective is not ready, or the enemy can fall back and retake after the effect.
- Verify: that the entry player can act immediately and that your team has a trade path if the first target is not eliminated.
Hero shooters
Hero-shooter ultimates are usually judged by team-fight timing, synergy, survivability and counter-building. Blizzard’s Stadium guidance identifies four victory pillars: “Developing a Power Strategy; Making a Quick Buck; Spending Wisely on Items; and Watching Your Opponent’s Strategies.” Applied to ultimates, that means tracking your own combination, the enemy’s available counters and the resources needed for the next fight.
Pair effects that multiply one another: a damage boost with grouped targets, a displacement with a ready finisher, or a defensive ultimate with a committed push. Avoid stacking two resources that solve the same problem unless the objective clock demands it. If the enemy still has a known barrier, cleanse or invulnerability, bait or force that counter first when practical.

- Spend: when at least two teammates can act during the effect and the enemy’s main answer is unavailable or already committed.
- Hold: after winning a fight, when opponents are respawning and there is no objective to convert, or when your team lacks the damage or positioning to finish.
- Survival exception: use a defensive ultimate to preserve a numbers advantage or stop an enemy win condition, even if no elimination follows.
Battle royale FPS games
Battle royale resources have a wider time horizon. A power-up may grant an additional passive ability, improve a rotation or charge a character’s ultimate. The value is not just the next duel; it includes survival probability, squad readiness, terrain and the quality of the next engagement.
Spend before a rotation when the ability changes whether your squad can cross exposed ground, reach high ground or avoid a closing zone. Hold when you are already safe and the next fight is uncertain, especially if the resource can be carried into a final-ring position. A charge that improves your ultimate is valuable only if you are likely to survive long enough to use that ultimate; do not treat the charge as an automatic reason to fight early.
- Spend: to cross a dangerous gap, escape a third party, secure a defensible position or turn an unavoidable close-range fight.
- Hold: when the squad is split, healing, low on ammunition or moving through terrain where the effect cannot be exploited.
- Reassess: after every ring change, because the best timing can shift from a rotation to a hold inside the next zone.
Loadout and field-upgrade shooters
Field upgrades and loadout abilities are often available repeatedly, so players tend to waste them by using them on cooldown. Activision’s guidance is to “use them wisely” and test how often loadout items can be used in a match. Treat each charge as a planned timing: identify the next hardpoint, doorway, streak threat or push where it will deny space or create a safe entry.
Because replacement may be faster than in a round-based tactical game, the economy is about timing and opportunity cost rather than permanent scarcity. A field upgrade used during a quiet rotation may be available again later, but it still cannot help during the fight that began while it was recharging. Conversely, holding through an entire life is wasteful if you are about to respawn or the match phase will end.
Compare “spend” and “hold” with the same checklist

Common waste patterns and corrections
Using on cooldown
Cooldown availability is not a trigger. Replace “available now” with a condition such as “available and the enemy is committed on the point.” If no condition exists, keep the resource.
Waiting for a perfect highlight
Over-saving can be as costly as panic-spending. A guaranteed objective denial, safe escape or favorable two-player trade is enough; the resource does not need to produce a multi-kill.
Activating before the call
Give a short call that includes timing and target: “hold for the swing,” “drop on point in three,” or “use after their barrier.” If teammates do not acknowledge, choose a self-contained use or delay.
Ignoring the next fight’s conditions
Track ammunition, health, respawn timers, enemy counters and terrain. A resource saved for a theoretical fight may never be usable if your squad cannot arrive or the objective moves.

Two ultimates can overlap while producing no additional outcome. Assign each effect a job—entry, denial, damage, protection or escape—and spend the second only when the first creates the space it is meant to exploit.
A practical communication routine
- Before contact: announce the intended window and the trigger that will activate it.
- On the trigger: name the target or area and start the effect while teammates can still act.
- During the effect: call the conversion—push, plant, capture, finish or retreat—instead of repeating the ability name.
- Afterward: note what countered it and update the next plan; do not automatically spend another resource to compensate.
This routine makes timing visible to teammates and reduces accidental overlap, especially in noisy fights.
Practice the judgment, not just the mechanics
Review a few lost rounds or fights and write down the six answers from the five-second test. Mark whether the missed value came from a bad trigger, missing coordination, an overlooked counter or an unrealistic future window. In custom games, rehearse the same objective with the resource used at three moments: before contact, at the contest and after the enemy commits. Compare which timing lets teammates act and which leaves opponents an easy escape.
Do not search for a universal percentage or cooldown rule. Official guidance supports planning, wise spending, coordination and adaptation, but it does not establish one numerical timing threshold that applies across games. Your own review should therefore measure outcomes—objective progress, survival, space gained and resources preserved—rather than highlight clips alone.
Bottom line
Spend an ultimate or power-up when a concrete trigger is present, your team can convert it immediately, and the opponent cannot cheaply reset. Hold it when the trigger is absent, the required follow-up is missing, or a specific stronger window is close. The best players are not those who use every charge quickly; they are the ones who can explain exactly what pressing the button will change.
