Spend a scarce resource when the banner offers something you genuinely want, you understand its odds and guarantee rules, and your stash makes the attempt worthwhile. Save when you are reacting to hype, cannot reach a useful guarantee, or would rather pursue a future target. Check what each ticket or coin can actually buy, and treat rerolling as a separate decision about whether to restart a new account.
There is no universal gem budget or pull threshold: rules vary by game, region, banner, and pity state. Use the banner details and official notices for your game before committing.
Should you pull now or save?
Decide based on the next pull and its cost—not on what you have already spent. Past pulls do not make another pull more valuable by themselves. Before spending, weigh the current target against what those resources could do later.
Check the target and its availability
- Do you actually want the reward? Personal enjoyment and your own account goals matter; a tier list can inform the decision but should not make it for you.
- What can the banner give you? Check its pool, whether the target is featured, and whether it is limited, permanent, or obtainable elsewhere.
- How much would you give up? Compare the immediate target with future banners or other uses you care about.
Availability can change urgency. For example, the Lost Sword beginner’s guide says ordinary released units enter the standard pool, while collaboration units remain outside it. That is a game-specific distinction, not a rule for every gacha.

Work out what your stash can accomplish
Check the pull cost, listed odds, guarantee ceiling, your current pity, and whether a high-rarity result resets the counter. Then check what happens if the banner ends before you get the target: pity and guarantee status may or may not carry over to another banner of the same type. A partial stash can still be worth spending if you value the chance and accept the risk, but do not mistake an uncertain attempt for a guaranteed result.
One concrete example shows why the exact terms matter. HoYoverse’s September 17, 2025 help article says a 5-star character is guaranteed within 90 wishes on a Genshin Impact Character Event Wish. The first 5-star has a 50% chance of being the featured character; after a non-featured 5-star, the next one is guaranteed featured. The two Character Event Wish banners share pity and guarantee status. The same article gives an 80-wish 5-star guarantee for Weapon Event Wish, with different featured-weapon odds. These are Genshin-specific figures, not a cross-game pull formula; check current in-game Wish details and notices.
How to compare two banners
When choosing between actual banners, compare the following factors rather than judging by the word “limited” or by a currency label alone:

- Cost to a guaranteed outcome: How many pulls and which resources would it take?
- What the guarantee delivers: Does it guarantee the featured target or only a high-rarity item?
- Pity and guarantee carryover: Does progress transfer, and between which banner types?
- Eligibility: Which currencies, tickets, or coins can be used?
- Availability later: Could the reward enter another pool or exchange, or is it exclusive?
Mechanics can differ even within one game. HoYoverse’s Genshin example has different character and weapon guarantees. The Etheria: Restart gacha guide distinguishes ticket types and banner-specific carryover. In Lost Sword, the cited guide distinguishes collaboration releases from ordinary pool additions. None of these examples substitutes for checking the rules of the banner you are considering.
Can coins and tickets be used on the banner you want?
Do not assume that every resource labeled as a ticket, coin, crystal, or currency is interchangeable. Check the banner’s accepted items and the game’s exchange shop before converting anything. In Etheria: Restart, the cited guide reports that 100 Hydra Crystals can be exchanged for one Anima Prototype and 300 for one Apex Prototype, with the Apex option restricted to the rate-up banner. It also distinguishes the two prototype types by banner class and says Shells are farmed in PvE rather than pulled. These are game-specific mechanics reported in a guide last updated May 30, 2025, so verify that they still apply in-game.
More broadly, gacha systems can use separate reward pools and pity counters for different rarity tracks. Currency names alone do not tell you a pull’s cost or what its guarantee covers. When is rerolling worth considering?
Rerolling means starting over to try for a more desirable early account. Consider it only when the account is new, the game permits a manageable reset route, and you have a specific starting target. Its cost is the time spent repeating the opening and any progress you discard. If the process is onerous, the game restricts resets, or you are content with your start, keeping the account may be the better choice.

A quick pre-spend checklist
- Name the character or item you want, and be clear whether you want it for enjoyment, collection, or a specific account goal.
- Read the banner details: pool, odds, pull cost, guarantee ceiling, and what the guarantee actually awards.
- Check your pity and guarantee state, including whether a high-rarity result resets either one.
- Confirm carryover rules for this banner type if it ends before you get the target.
- Verify that your tickets, coins, or shop currency are eligible for the banner or exchange you intend to use.
- Compare the attempt with your next preferred use for those resources. If you are spending mainly because you already pulled, pause: sunk pulls do not improve the value of the next one.
