Run a portable air purifier for longer periods and at higher fan speeds when you need more filtration. For ordinary use, EPA guidance does not set one universal daily schedule: higher speed and longer operation simply move more air through the filter. During wildfire smoke, use a correctly sized purifier continuously on its highest setting in a room with doors and windows closed when it is safe to do so. Put the unit in the room people use most, leave its intake and outlet clear, and choose capacity by room area and CADR.
How long should an air purifier run?
For ordinary household use
The practical rule is straightforward: more operating time and a faster fan generally filter more air. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says, “Generally speaking, higher fan speeds and longer run times will increase the amount of air filtered.” A lower setting moves less air through the filter, so it removes particles more slowly.

EPA’s general home guide does not prescribe a single schedule that fits every home, purifier or pollutant. A small bedroom unit, a large living-room unit and a cleaner used only during cooking all have different workloads. Instead of treating a timer setting as a universal answer, select the longest runtime and highest speed that people can tolerate while the room is occupied.

During wildfire smoke
Smoke events call for more specific action than ordinary use. EPA’s cleaner-air-room guidance says: “Run the air cleaner continuously on the highest fan setting.” Choose a portable cleaner with sufficient smoke CADR, operate it in the room you are protecting, and keep doors and windows closed when it is safe to do so. This is smoke-event guidance, not a rule to seal a home during every season or in situations where ventilation is needed for safety.
Continuous high-speed operation is demanding: it produces more noise and loads the filter faster. Those trade-offs are acceptable during a smoke episode because the goal is to remove as much airborne particle pollution as the unit can process. Check the filter during and after a prolonged event; a dirty or overloaded filter will not work well.
Where should you put a portable air cleaner?
Start with the room people use most
Place the purifier in the room where household members spend the most time. A living room, bedroom or home office is usually more useful than a little-used hallway because the cleaner is intended to deliver cleaner air to a single room or area, not to guarantee the same air quality throughout an entire house.
If someone is especially vulnerable to poor air quality, prioritize the room where that person spends time. During wildfire smoke, that may be a bedroom used for sleeping or a designated cleaner-air room. If you move the unit between rooms, it can help each room while operating there, but it cannot clean both spaces at once.

Keep intake and outlet airflow unobstructed
Leave clear space around the purifier’s air intake and outlet. Curtains, furniture, bedding, walls and piles of clothing can block airflow and reduce the volume of air reaching the filter. Follow the clearances and orientation in the unit’s instructions; floor and tabletop models are designed differently.
Do not aim an uncomfortable draft directly at a person. Redirect the outlet if the airflow is irritating, while keeping the intake and discharge path open. A convenient location where people will not cover the unit, unplug it or trip over its cord is more effective than an ideal location that is impractical.
Use room boundaries during a smoke episode
For a cleaner-air room, EPA advises using the purifier where air can flow freely around it and closing the room’s doors and windows when safe. Closing the room helps the cleaner work on a defined volume of air, but it does not make the purifier a whole-home system. Do not block required ventilation for fuel-burning appliances or ignore local safety instructions simply to keep a room closed.

Use room area and CADR
CADR, or clean air delivery rate, describes how quickly a cleaner delivers filtered air for particle removal. Match the unit’s CADR to the area you intend to serve. Measure the room’s length and width in feet and multiply them. Include the full area when adjacent spaces form one open plan.

EPA’s estimated minimum CADR table assumes an eight-foot ceiling:
| Room area | Estimated minimum CADR |
|---|---|
| 100 square feet | 65 cfm |
| 200 square feet | 130 cfm |
| 300 square feet | 195 cfm |
| 400 square feet | 260 cfm |
| 500 square feet | 325 cfm |
| 600 square feet | 390 cfm |
These are estimates, not guarantees. A ceiling higher than eight feet contains more air, so a higher CADR may be appropriate. A purifier rated for a 200-square-foot room should not automatically be treated as adequate for a 200-square-foot space with a very high ceiling, an open stairwell or substantial air exchange with other rooms.
Calculate an open-plan area honestly
For an open living, dining and kitchen area, add the floor areas that are connected to the air volume you want to treat. Do not size only for the corner where the machine sits. If one purifier cannot provide enough CADR for the entire open area, use multiple units or concentrate one cleaner in the room where people spend the most time.

Use a separate rule for wildfire smoke
For a cleaner-air room during wildfire smoke, EPA gives a smoke-specific rule: choose a unit with a tobacco-smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room area in square feet. For example, a 300-square-foot room calls for a tobacco-smoke CADR of at least 200 cfm under that rule (300 × 2/3). This formula serves the smoke-event context and should not be confused with the general estimated table above.

What CADR can—and cannot—tell you
CADR is a particle measure
CADR helps compare removal of airborne particles such as smoke particles, dust and pollen. It does not by itself describe removal of gases or odors. If gases or volatile organic compounds are the concern, look for activated carbon or another filter material specifically intended for gas removal.
EPA notes that portable air cleaners do not have a widely used rating system for gas-removal performance. Activated carbon can be effective when there is a large amount of carbon material, but a thin carbon layer should not be treated as an unlimited odor or chemical-removal solution.
No purifier removes every indoor pollutant
A portable cleaner has a limited airflow rate, serves a defined area and depends on a functioning filter. It is not a substitute for source control, safe ventilation or fixing a pollution source. Do not promise that any unit eliminates every pollutant or guarantees a health outcome. Use the cleaner as one part of an indoor-air strategy.

Choosing a unit for the way you will use it
| Decision | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Room coverage | Particle or smoke CADR compared with the room area and ceiling height | An undersized unit moves too little air for the intended space. |
| Pollutant type | Particle CADR plus activated carbon or another gas-targeted filter when gases matter | CADR does not measure gas removal. |
| Usable noise level | Published noise rating at the speeds you will actually run | A quieter cleaner is more likely to stay on. |
| Placement | Physical size, intake and outlet direction, and a location free of curtains or furniture | Blocked airflow reduces performance and can make operation inconvenient. |
| Filter upkeep | Replacement-filter availability, correct model compatibility and the maker’s maintenance instructions | A dirty or overloaded filter will not work well. |
EPA does not endorse specific air-cleaner brands or models. ENERGY STAR labeling indicates energy efficiency; it does not indicate air-cleaning effectiveness. Treat energy efficiency and cleaning performance as separate buying decisions.

Filter maintenance and central HVAC options
Replace filters according to the device instructions
All filters need regular replacement. The exact interval depends on the filter, operating hours, fan speed and particle load, so there is no universal replacement date for every purifier. Follow the purifier and filter maker’s schedule, inspect the filter when the unit indicates service, and check it sooner after heavy smoke exposure. Installing the correct replacement model matters; a filter that does not seal or fit properly can allow air to bypass the intended filtration path.
Use a central HVAC filter only when the system runs
A central HVAC filter filters air only while the heating or cooling system’s fan is operating. EPA’s guide notes that HVAC systems in most cases run less than 25% of the time during heating and cooling seasons; that figure is contextual, not a guaranteed runtime for every home.
EPA recommends MERV 13, or the highest-efficiency filter the system can accommodate. Check compatibility with the HVAC manufacturer or a qualified technician before upgrading. A filter that is too restrictive for the blower can create equipment or airflow problems, so do not assume that a higher MERV rating is automatically suitable.

- Define the target space. Choose the room where people spend the most time, or the room used by a person who is particularly vulnerable to poor air quality.
- Measure the area. Multiply length by width, add connected open-plan areas, and note whether the ceiling is higher than eight feet.
- Match CADR. Use EPA’s estimated table for general particle removal; for wildfire smoke, use a tobacco-smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room area in square feet.
- Prepare the location. Set the unit on the floor or a tabletop as designed, with intake and outlet clear of curtains, walls and furniture.
- Set the speed. Run longer and faster when you need more filtration. During wildfire smoke, run continuously on high in the cleaner-air room when safe.
- Keep it operating. Choose a speed whose noise you can tolerate, since a cleaner that remains on can filter more air than one repeatedly switched off.
- Maintain the filter. Inspect and replace it according to the manufacturer’s instructions, with extra attention after a heavy smoke event.
Common setup problems and fixes
The purifier is running, but airflow seems weak
Check whether curtains, furniture or bedding are blocking the intake or outlet. Move the unit into an open position and confirm that the filter is installed correctly. If the filter is dirty or overloaded, replace it according to the maker’s instructions.
The whole home still smells smoky
A portable unit is intended for one room or area. Move it to the room people use most, close interior doors during a smoke event when safe, and verify that the unit has sufficient smoke CADR for that room. A particle CADR alone does not guarantee removal of gases or odors; gas concerns require an appropriate gas-targeted filter.
The unit is too loud to leave on
Use a lower setting when noise would otherwise stop operation, place the cleaner where its draft is comfortable, and increase the speed when the room is unoccupied or during a smoke event. When comparing units, look at noise ratings at usable speeds rather than relying only on the maximum airflow figure.
One machine cannot cover an open floor plan
Recalculate the full connected area and compare it with the unit’s CADR. If the required capacity is beyond one machine, use multiple cleaners or focus filtration on the room where people spend the most time. Do not label a corner-sized unit as whole-home coverage.
