There is no universally right month or minimum tenure for asking for a pay rise. The strongest time is when you can show clear evidence of your contribution and your employer can still consider compensation—often before a scheduled review or budget is finalized. A good moment improves the conversation; it does not guarantee a raise.
What makes the timing right?
Look for two things together: a credible case for higher pay and a practical opening in your employer’s decision process. A recent achievement can make your value easier to explain, while an upcoming review or budget cycle may give your manager a route to act on the request.
Ask your manager or HR when pay reviews happen and when compensation budgets are decided. Some employers use annual reviews; others have different schedules. If decisions are made before the formal review meeting, raise the subject early enough to be considered rather than waiting until the process is over. Indeed UK describes financial-year reviews as a possibility, not a universal calendar (Indeed UK).
Choose a moment when your evidence is strong
After a meaningful result
A completed project, a strong performance review, or a measurable improvement can give the conversation a concrete starting point. Keep examples from since your last pay adjustment—or, if you have not had one, since joining. Note the outcome, your role in it, and the value to the team or organization.

When your responsibilities have grown
If your role has expanded in a sustained way, describe what changed: additional duties, broader ownership, or work beyond the original expectations. Connect the change to the level of contribution you are now making rather than relying on tenure alone.
When the manager can give the request proper attention
Book a private conversation specifically about compensation. If practical, avoid raising it in the middle of a crisis, a stressful project, or a period when your manager is visibly overloaded. EURES also advises considering the organization’s situation, including cutbacks, when choosing when to ask (EURES).

How much should tenure matter?
Tenure can help show that you have had time to demonstrate results, but the available guidance does not establish a universal waiting period. The New York State Department of Labor identifies an annual review after a year as a suitable opportunity and says six months may be acceptable when there are specific results. Indeed UK suggests waiting at least six months after starting a job or changing roles. These are context-specific recommendations, not a guaranteed entitlement or rule for every employer (New York State Department of Labor; Indeed UK).
If your role has changed substantially or you have delivered an exceptional result sooner, you can ask whether a compensation discussion is appropriate now. If you are new and still building a record, ask how performance and pay are assessed, and when a review would make sense.

Prepare a clear, evidence-led request
- Check comparable pay. Compare roles at a similar level in the same sector and location. Use employer salary bands, relevant job listings, and reputable local salary-comparison resources; a broad national average may not fit your role.
- Write down your contribution. Bring a concise list of completed goals, measurable impact where available, additional responsibilities, and work beyond the original role. If a result is difficult to quantify, explain its practical benefit. SEEK quotes career coach Jane Jackson: “If you are not able to provide numbers then talk about the perceived benefit – such as how you streamlined a process or improved team morale. Tangible and intangible benefits are what you must bring to the attention of your manager.” (SEEK)
- Decide what you are asking for. State a specific salary or a considered range, and be ready to explain how you arrived at it. Do not invent a competing offer. New York State DOL’s caution that an employer may read the top of a proposed range as a candidate’s ceiling applies to job-offer negotiations; it should not automatically be treated as a rule for internal raises (New York State Department of Labor).
- Schedule the conversation. Ask for dedicated time rather than making the request as an aside. Explain that you want to discuss compensation and your contribution so your manager knows the purpose of the meeting.
- Ask what happens next. If your manager cannot decide, ask what approval is needed and when you should follow up. Confirm any agreed salary, effective date, or next review point in writing.
If the answer is no—or not yet
Ask what specific results, responsibilities, or conditions would strengthen your case, and agree on a date to revisit it. If a salary increase is not possible, ask whether other compensation or benefits can be considered. SEEK suggests a three-to-six-month revisit in some situations; that is an example, not a standard interval for every employer (SEEK). If the employer cannot commit to a future review, clarify what would trigger another discussion.

In a Salary Pulse survey conducted by Nature on behalf of SEEK, more than 3,046 working-aged Australians were interviewed. SEEK reported in April 2026 that 35% felt uncomfortable asking for a raise, while 84% expected to get one in the next 12 months. Those figures describe survey respondents in Australia; they are not a global estimate and do not show that any particular timing strategy causes a raise (SEEK).
