Repair an old gadget when a dependable fix can restore enough safe, supported and useful life to justify the complete cost. Replace it when the diagnosis is uncertain, parts or skilled service are hard to obtain, software support is ending, or the repaired device still cannot do what you need.
There is no reliable universal rule such as “repair if it costs less than half the replacement.” The sensible choice depends on the fault, the full repair bill, the quality and availability of parts, the device’s remaining support period, and the capabilities you actually need.

Start with the decision that matters: what will each option buy you?
A repair quote is not directly comparable with the sticker price of a new product. A fair comparison includes every cost required to get a dependable device in your hands, then asks how long that result will remain useful.
- Repair total: diagnosis, parts, labor, shipping, required tools, software access or calibration, and the risk of discovering another fault after the device is opened.
- Replacement total: the price of a suitable new or refurbished equivalent, plus setup, data transfer, accessories, subscriptions or other switching costs.
- Value after the transaction: expected reliable life, operating-system and security support, performance, compatibility and the functions you cannot sacrifice.
A cheap repair that leaves an unsupported phone unsafe for sensitive accounts may be worse value than a more expensive replacement. Conversely, a battery or charging-port repair that restores a otherwise capable laptop can postpone a large purchase for years. The same arithmetic does not work for every model, market or fault.

A five-step repair-or-replace process
1. Check warranty, insurance and statutory coverage first
Find the written warranty, protection plan or retailer terms before paying for diagnosis. Confirm whether the plan covers the specific failure, parts, labor, shipping and a replacement if repair is impossible. Ask who authorizes the work and whether using a particular service provider is required.
U.S. Federal Trade Commission guidance emphasizes that warranty coverage and claims procedures differ, so the written terms control. FTC consumer guidance also says an in-warranty claim cannot be refused solely because an earlier independent repair was unrelated to the covered problem. That is a U.S.-specific consumer-law point, not a rule to apply automatically in another country.
2. Get a diagnosis and a complete, conditional quote
Ask the technician to identify the failed component and to separate confirmed findings from possibilities. The quote should state:

Get a second opinion when the first diagnosis is vague, unusually expensive or based only on symptoms. Compare an authorized service center with a competent independent shop when both serve your model. Price is only one factor: parts availability, repair time, diagnostic access and confidence in the proposed fix can change the decision.
3. Verify that the repair is practical, not merely theoretically possible
A component may be replaceable in principle yet impractical for an owner. Check that the exact part for your model is available at an acceptable price, that a reliable model-specific guide exists, and that you can obtain the required tools. Some repairs also require software access, pairing, calibration or post-repair testing.

Design choices, scarce documentation, restricted parts, adhesive construction and software barriers can turn a nominally simple job into a high-risk one. A precision electronics repair toolkit can be useful for a confirmed DIY job, but it is not universally compatible: identify the gadget, read its repair guide and verify the required bits and opening tools first. 5. Compare the outcomes, not just the prices

Several age-related problems at once
Replacement is more persuasive when the device needs multiple unrelated fixes, shows intermittent faults, has a damaged enclosure that threatens other components, or has a history of recurring failures. Paying for one repair may simply postpone the next failure while leaving you with the same slow or limited hardware.
Software support is ending
A repaired connected device may still be a poor choice if security updates or essential applications will stop during the period you need it. Check support for the exact model, not just the product family or the date it was purchased.
The repair leaves a capability gap

The European Commission Joint Research Centre states: “Extending the lifetime of products is one of the most effective ways to reduce their environmental impact.” That principle supports considering repair, not assuming every repair is automatically greener.

- Confirm the exact part, guide, tools, calibration and software requirements for the model.
- Check remaining operating-system and security support for your region.

- Price a suitable new and refurbished replacement, including setup and accessories.

Historical price examples are not current benchmarks
The FTC’s 2021 report to Congress described Apple’s 2018 out-of-warranty battery-replacement price for iPhone 6 and later models falling from $79 to $29. That is a historical example of a price change, not a current repair price, a guaranteed saving or a threshold for deciding about another model. Your quote, location and device edition control the present calculation.
