Apple Music does not simply wipe your entire library when a subscription expires. Apple says access to songs from its subscription catalog ends, playlists that depend on catalog music become unavailable, and Sync Library turns off. Music and playlists that were already on your device before you subscribed remain available.
That is different from permanently deleting every personal file or promising that all cloud-synced library information will be recoverable later. The result depends on whether an item came from the Apple Music catalog, was already yours, or was only being synchronized through Apple’s cloud library.

The short answer: access changes, but “delete” is too broad
When your Apple Music subscription expires, Apple’s cancellation guidance describes a loss of subscription rights rather than a blanket erasure of everything associated with your account. Catalog tracks can no longer be played. Playlists added from the catalog, or playlists you created with catalog songs, are no longer available. Sync Library is turned off.
Apple also says that music and playlists that were on your device before you subscribed remain available. That statement is deliberately narrower than “your entire library is safe.” It covers content already on the device before the subscription, not every item that later appeared through synchronization or an Apple Music download.

Apple does not give a retention period for synced library metadata in the cited cancellation guidance. Therefore, you should not assume that an unavailable catalog playlist, play history, artwork, or cloud-based organization will automatically return if you subscribe again later.
What changes when the subscription expires
| Library item or feature | After Apple Music expires |
|---|---|
| Song from the Apple Music catalog | Cannot be played through the expired subscription. |
| Playlist added from the Apple Music catalog | Becomes unavailable. |
| Playlist created with catalog music | Becomes unavailable. |
| Sync Library | Turns off when the subscription expires. |
| Music already on the device before subscribing | Remains available, according to Apple. |
| Playlists already on the device before subscribing | Remain available, according to Apple. |
The table separates two issues that are often conflated: whether you can still play an item and whether the item remains listed in a library. A catalog song downloaded for offline listening is still catalog content; downloading it while subscribed does not turn it into a purchased or personally owned file that remains playable after expiry.
Why an Apple Music download is not the same as owning a song
Apple Music’s catalog is supplied under a subscription license. The app can store catalog tracks on a device for offline use while the subscription is active, but that convenience does not transfer ownership of the recording to you. Once the subscription expires, Apple’s guidance says catalog songs can no longer be played.

The relevant question is not “Was it downloaded?” but “Where did the music come from?” A file you imported, purchased separately, or had on the device before subscribing is a different category from a catalog download.
Do not treat a storage device, an export, or an offline copy as a way to preserve the right to play Apple Music catalog tracks after cancellation. The official cancellation guidance does not support that conclusion.
What music and playlists can remain
Music that was already on your device
Apple Support states: “Any music and playlists you had on your device before you subscribed to Apple Music will still be available.” This is the clearest preservation statement in Apple’s cancellation instructions.

Examples include audio files you manually added before subscribing and playlists that existed on the device at that time. Keep the wording scoped to Apple’s statement: it confirms availability of those pre-subscription items, but it does not promise that every item ever synchronized with your account will remain visible on every device.
Playlists that use catalog tracks
A playlist can be your own creation and still depend on Apple Music’s catalog. If its entries are catalog songs, Apple says that playlist becomes unavailable when the subscription expires. The fact that you named the playlist, arranged the tracks, or downloaded it does not remove its dependence on the catalog license.
A playlist made entirely from music already on your device is treated differently under Apple’s statement about pre-subscription music and playlists. If you need to identify which case applies, inspect the playlist’s tracks while the subscription is active and note which items are personal files or separately acquired music rather than catalog selections.
What turning off Sync Library means
Sync Library keeps eligible music and playlists coordinated across devices while the feature is active. Apple says it turns off when an Apple Music subscription expires. That means a device should no longer be treated as connected to the subscription-based cloud library in the same way.
Turning Sync Library off is not the same sentence as “Apple deletes every personal file.” Local files already stored on a device can remain subject to the device’s own storage and music-management state. At the same time, Apple’s cancellation page does not specify how long cloud library information is retained after expiry, so there is no official time limit you can rely on for recovering a synchronized playlist or library arrangement.

Removing a download versus deleting a library item
Apple’s separate deletion guidance explains two actions that have very different effects. They are library-management commands, not guarantees about what will happen after cancellation.
| Action | Immediate scope | Effect when Sync Library is enabled |
|---|---|---|
| Remove Download | Removes the downloaded copy from the device in use. | The library item is not described as being deleted from other devices by this action. |
| Delete from Library | Deletes the item from the library. | Apple says the deletion also affects other devices using Sync Library. |
Use “Remove Download” when you want to free local storage while keeping a library entry under an active syncing setup. Use “Delete from Library” only when you intend to remove the item itself. Neither command restores access to catalog music after your subscription expires, and neither is a post-cancellation recovery guarantee.
What to check before you cancel
A short inventory can prevent confusion later. The goal is to distinguish local, personal content from subscription-dependent content; it is not to create a method for bypassing Apple Music licensing.
- Review important playlists while the subscription is active. Identify which ones contain catalog songs and which are built from music already on your device.
- Check where irreplaceable audio is stored. If a recording is a personal file, confirm that the original file exists on the computer or device where you keep it. Do not assume the Apple Music library view is the only copy.
- Separate catalog downloads from owned or imported music. A download badge does not by itself establish ownership or future playback rights.
- Decide whether you are cancelling or merely removing a device download. “Remove Download” changes local storage; cancelling the subscription changes catalog access and Sync Library status.
- Verify the billing route. The cancellation path depends on whether Apple bills you directly or the subscription is managed through Google Play.
Apple’s guidance does not promise that exporting a playlist, copying a catalog download, or saving a local database will preserve the right to play subscription tracks after expiry. Treat any personal notes you make as organizational help, not as a license workaround.
How to cancel without guessing the billing path
Subscriptions managed on the web
Apple’s Australia support guidance says cancellation can be managed at music.apple.com. Sign in through the account that holds the subscription and follow the cancellation controls shown for that account. The labels and available options can vary by country and billing arrangement.
When web cancellation is unavailable
Apple says to use the device’s Settings when web cancellation is not available. Open the subscription-management area associated with your Apple Account and confirm the Apple Music cancellation before leaving the screen. Because Apple can change interface labels, use the current on-screen instructions for your region rather than relying on an old screenshot.

Subscriptions billed through Google Play
If Apple Music is billed through Google Play, Apple says cancellation must be completed through the Apple Music Android app or Google Play. Cancelling an Apple-billed subscription in an Apple device’s settings will not necessarily cancel a subscription whose payment relationship is with Google Play.
Regional exceptions
Apple notes that cancellation procedures differ somewhat in Israel, South Africa, and Türkiye. The cited page is an Australia support page, so readers elsewhere should confirm the instructions for their country before acting. The important operational point is to cancel through the service that actually bills you.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What if a payment fails instead of being cancelled?
A failed payment and a deliberate cancellation are different account events, but the practical library question begins when the subscription actually expires. Apple’s post-expiry guidance applies at that point: catalog playback ends, catalog-dependent playlists become unavailable, and Sync Library turns off.
The cited guidance does not establish a universal grace period, exact cutoff time, or identical billing behavior for every country and payment method. Do not rely on a particular number of days after a failed charge. Check the subscription status shown in your account and the current Apple instructions for your region.
Troubleshooting common library surprises
A downloaded song will not play
First determine whether it came from the Apple Music catalog. If it did, the loss of playback after expiry matches Apple’s stated behavior. If it was a personal or pre-existing file, check the device that stored the original and confirm that the file itself still exists.

A playlist disappeared
Ask whether the playlist was added from Apple Music or contained catalog tracks. Apple says those playlists become unavailable after expiry. A playlist that existed on the device before subscribing is covered by Apple’s preservation statement, but a playlist that existed only through cloud synchronization is not given a retention promise in the cancellation guidance.

Sync Library is off
This is expected at subscription expiry under Apple’s instructions. It does not, by itself, prove that every local music file has been deleted. Inspect local storage and the original source of the music before taking any further deletion action.
A personal item is missing from another device
Do not assume that a missing item was erased from every location. Check the device where it was originally stored, review whether Sync Library was enabled before expiry, and contact Apple Support with the account, device, and country details. Apple’s cancellation page does not promise a fixed cloud-retention period or automatic restoration.
What Apple’s published guidance does—and does not—promise
Apple Support’s “How to cancel Apple Music,” published April 8, 2025, establishes the post-expiry behavior described above: catalog playback ends, catalog-based playlists become unavailable, Sync Library turns off, and pre-subscription music and playlists on the device remain available. Its wording does not say that Apple permanently deletes every personal library item, and it does not state how long synchronized library data remains in the cloud.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsApple’s “Delete music in the Apple Music app,” published April 24, 2024, clarifies the difference between removing a device download and deleting a library item across synced devices. That page explains library-management scope; it should not be read as a promise that cancelled catalog content can be recovered.
For a specific song, playlist, device, account, or billing arrangement, the safest answer comes from checking what is stored locally and asking Apple Support about the current status in your country.
