When and Where to See Wildflowers in Chile’s Atacama Desert (2026)

For the 2026 flowering-desert season, first blooms appeared in the second half of August, and larger fields began emerging in early September. Sernatur Atacama’s October 2 update projected the greatest diversity and abundance around mid-October, with some species potentially flowering into the second half of November. Those are seasonal observations and projections—not guaranteed dates or displays at every site. Check current local updates before travelling.

When will the 2026 flowering desert happen in Chile?

The timing depends on winter rain and local conditions, so there is no fixed annual flowering date. In 2026, Sernatur Atacama reported the first blooms in the second half of August and larger fields in the first half of September. Its October 2 update projected the peak of diversity and abundance around mid-October; some species could continue flowering through the second half of November. See Sernatur Atacama’s October 2, 2026 season update for the latest regional outlook.

These dates describe the 2026 season, not a dependable schedule for future years. Even during a strong season, flowering can differ between locations. Check municipal, CONAF and Sernatur updates close to your departure.

Where can you see the flowers?

Sernatur’s 2026 update names several areas to check, while Chile Travel also highlights Caleta Chañaral de Aceituno and Totoral. A named viewing area is not a promise that flowers are present at every stop; check current conditions for the particular route and site.

Area Location and access context What to verify
Parque Nacional Desierto Florido In Copiapó municipality, about 30 km south of Copiapó and 85 km north of Vallenar. The Travesía and Chañarcillo sectors are on opposite sides of Ruta 5 Norte. Current flower presence, access, and park restrictions. The park profile gives a total area of 57,107.4 hectares and reports that it was created on June 12, 2023. CONAF park profile.
Parque Nacional Llanos de Challe Chile Travel places the park about 90 km northwest of Vallenar. Current flowering, road and trail conditions, and visitor information. Chile Travel’s 2026 overview.

Ruta 5–Pajaritos sector near the Totoral toll point A roadside area named by Sernatur for the 2026 season. Safe, designated stopping places and current road conditions.
Quebrada Totoral and Totoral Sernatur names Quebrada Totoral; Chile Travel also identifies areas of Totoral. Current flower presence, route access and permitted visitor areas.

Caleta Chañaral de Aceituno Highlighted by Chile Travel as an area to consider. Check local updates for flowering and access before setting out.

The available updates do not establish a definitive road-by-road access list. In August 2026, the regional government said some roads remained damaged during recovery work; Sernatur’s October list does not certify that every route is currently in good condition. Confirm access with local authorities before choosing a destination.

Why does the Atacama Desert bloom?

The flowering desert is a spring emergence of annual plants and geophytes—plants that survive dry periods as seeds or underground structures—after unusually wet winter conditions. CONAF says rainfall exceeding 15 mm in coastal Atacama can trigger the phenomenon. Chile Travel gives a 15–30 mm range, mainly in June and July, and notes that accumulated cold hours also matter. These figures help explain the conditions; they do not predict a precise flowering date or guarantee a bloom in any one place. CONAF’s 2026 guidance describes the phenomenon and responsible viewing.

CONAF describes more than 200 annual and geophyte plant species. Representative plants in the Desierto Florido National Park include cuerno de cabra (Skytanthus acutus), copao cactus (Eulychnia acida), clavel del aire (Tillandsia landbeckii), pata de guanaco (Cistanthe longiscarpa), añañuca amarilla (Zephyranthes bagnoldii), suspiro (Nolana rostrata) and terciopelo (Argylia radiata). The Chañarcillo sector also supports the endangered Pintoa chilensis, according to the CONAF park profile.

What is distinctive about the 2026 season?

Officials and news coverage have reported large estimates for this season, but the measures are worded differently and should not be treated as interchangeable. Sernatur Atacama reported that CONAF and SBAP projected approximately 17,667 km² of germplasm activation, equivalent to 23% of the Atacama Region. Associated Press reported an estimated bloom coverage of about 17,000 km² and said CONAF projected the most intense and extensive event since 1997. “Germplasm activation” and “bloom coverage” are distinct descriptions, not necessarily the same measurement. Read the Sernatur update and Associated Press report of October 1, 2026 for their respective estimates.

Does the flowering desert happen every year?

No. The display is episodic and depends on unusual winter rainfall, along with local conditions such as accumulated cold hours. Seeds and underground plant structures can remain dormant through dry periods, so a date on the calendar alone cannot establish whether flowers will appear. Check official updates for both the season and the specific area you plan to visit.

How to visit without damaging the flowers

CONAF’s guidance is to observe without disturbing the desert. Flower fields and fragile plants can be damaged by trampling, collecting or off-road driving, even where the landscape looks open.

  • Stay on established vehicle roads and marked walking trails; do not enter flower fields for a closer view.
  • Stop or park only in safe, designated places.
  • Do not pick flowers or collect seeds or bulbs.
  • Leave pets out of protected areas, and do not feed or disturb wildlife.
  • Pack rubbish back to town.
  • Check access rules and current conditions with municipal, CONAF and Sernatur channels before departure. CONAF recommends using Sernatur-registered services.

A compact pair of binoculars can help you inspect flowers from a permitted stopping place without approaching them.
