Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAn SSD failure can make some files unreadable, prevent the computer from starting reliably, or leave the drive undetected. It does not automatically mean every file is gone, but recovery is uncertain: Samsung warns that recovering data from an SSD that has actually failed can be difficult. A separate, restorable backup—ideally including an off-site copy—can keep you from depending on that one drive.
What an SSD failure can look like
An SSD is part of the route your computer uses to access stored files. If something in that route stops working, the practical result may be trouble reading or saving files, repeated startup crashes, or a drive the computer no longer recognizes. These symptoms do not reveal whether the cause is the flash storage, controller, firmware, interface, file corruption, or another system component; they also do not establish that every file is lost. Samsung lists file read/write problems, boot crashes, and SMART alerts as warning signs, not as a guaranteed failure sequence (Samsung Support).

Warning signs deserve action, not a diagnosis by themselves
- Files fail to open, save, move, or copy reliably.
- The computer repeatedly crashes or fails during startup.
- A drive-health tool reports a SMART warning or error.
Other computer faults can cause similar symptoms. Treat them as a reason to protect important data and investigate, rather than proof of which component has failed.

SMART information can flag problems such as degraded reliability or a drive entering read-only status, and an alert is a reason to back up promptly. But a clean status is not a guarantee of health. SanDisk’s SSD documentation notes that CHKDSK and SMART cannot detect a failed SSD controller; diagnostic tools do not cover every possible fault (SanDisk SSD documentation).

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
Seagate likewise recommends backing up promptly after a SMART error, while noting that some alerts, such as excessive temperature, may relate to a condition that can be addressed. A warning should be taken seriously without assuming that the drive is already beyond recovery (Seagate support).
Can data be recovered after an SSD fails?
Sometimes, but the available guidance does not support a guarantee. Samsung says it can be difficult to recover data from an SSD that has actually failed. Recovery may involve third-party software or a recovery service, but whether either can help depends on the fault and the condition of the drive (Samsung Support).

If files are important and the drive is unstable or inaccessible, there is no safe universal repair sequence established for every case. Repeated restarts, formatting, reinstalling the operating system, or running repair utilities should not be treated as proven recovery methods. Formatting can erase data, and further writes or changes may complicate an already uncertain recovery. When the data matters, avoid experiments that could alter it and seek case-specific advice.
Why a cloud copy matters—and why sync is not enough
A copy stored away from your computer can remain available if its internal SSD fails, or if the computer is stolen or physically damaged. Cloud backup can automate that separate copy, but distinguish a backup that retains earlier versions from synchronization that mirrors current files. CISA warns that ransomware-encrypted local files can sync to cloud storage and overwrite unaffected data (CISA StopRansomware Guide).

- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
For greater resilience, use multiple copies and protect at least one copy from the same event or account compromise that could affect the computer. CISA recommends offline, encrypted backups and regular restoration tests. A cloud copy can provide off-site separation, but it is not a substitute for version history or another protected copy in every setup.
Apply the 3-2-1 backup approach
A joint CISA, FBI, and Australian Cyber Security Centre advisory describes the 3-2-1 principle: keep three copies in total, including the production data; use two different media; and keep one copy off-site (Joint CISA, FBI, and ACSC advisory). It is a resilience principle, not a guarantee against every loss scenario.

For a home computer, one practical interpretation is the working files on the computer, a copy on an external drive, and an off-site copy. An external SSD or hard drive can supply the local copy; it does not itself provide off-site protection. Choose enough capacity for the files you need, check that the drive works with your computer, and use a process you can repeat consistently.

Check that the backup is genuinely useful
- Independence: Could the same theft, damage, or account compromise affect both the original and the copy?
- Version retention: Can you recover a file from before it was changed, deleted, or encrypted?
- Protection: Is a copy offline or otherwise protected from unauthorized access?
- Restore: Have you actually recovered a test file, and can you restore a larger set if needed?
- Routine: Does the backup run automatically or through a simple schedule you will maintain?
Do drive-failure percentages predict your SSD’s risk?
No universal consumer failure percentage for an individual SSD is established by the available figures. Backblaze reported a 0.89% lifetime annualized failure rate for the SSD models in its own server boot-drive population at the end of 2022; it noted sample-size and confidence-interval limitations. That fleet statistic is not a personal lifetime probability (Backblaze 2022 SSD report).

- NEARLY 2X FASTER THAN OUR PREVIOUS GENERATION(8) – move 1,000 high-res photos in under 60 seconds(6) with up to 2000MB/s transfer speeds(2).
- IP65 RATING AND UP TO 3M DROP PROTECTION(3) – protects against spills and drops.
- POCKET-SIZED – fits easily in pockets and small bags.
- SPACE TO OWN YOUR AI CONTENT – speed and capacity to download your high-res clips and photo edits.
- 256-BIT AES ENCRYPTION(4) – helps keep private files secure with password protection.
Backblaze’s 2026 Drive Stats page reports aggregate annualized failure rates of 1.73% in Q2 2026 and 1.36% for calendar year 2025 for its monitored drive population. Those are not SSD-only consumer forecasts and should not be combined with the separate 2022 SSD report to estimate an individual’s risk (Backblaze Drive Stats). Workload, model, age, environment, and the definition of failure all affect how such fleet figures should be interpreted.
