WhatsApp Web calling is real: Meta announced in July 2026 that users can make and receive one-to-one and group audio and video calls in a browser, without downloading WhatsApp Desktop. The rollout is gradual, however, so the call controls may not yet appear for every account. If you do not see them, the Windows or Mac app and the mobile app remain alternatives.
What WhatsApp Web calling includes
WhatsApp Web is the browser-based client; WhatsApp Desktop is an installed Windows or Mac application, and the mobile app is for Android or iPhone. The new Web feature brings calling to the browser rather than requiring users to switch to the installed desktop app.
Meta says Web supports one-to-one and group audio and video calls, screen sharing, reactions, and a dedicated Calls tab with call history and favorites. It also describes call transfers among phone, tablet, Web, and Desktop; waiting rooms for group calls using approval-required call links; QuickHD for high-definition video at the beginning of a call; and background-noise suppression. Why older stories say calling is still in development
Calling on a computer is not new, but browser calling arrived later than calling in the installed app. Early reports and limited tests are easy to mistake for a general Web launch.

How to make a call in WhatsApp Web
The precise layout and labels can vary as the feature rolls out. You need an active linked WhatsApp Web session, a modern browser, a working internet connection, and permission to use the microphone. Video calls also need camera access.
- Open WhatsApp Web in an up-to-date browser and link your account through WhatsApp’s current linked-device flow if you have not already done so.
- Open the individual or group chat you want to call.
- Look for the call control in the chat header. If the interface offers a choice, select audio or video.
- Allow the browser to access your microphone and, for video, your camera. If you previously blocked access, change the permission for WhatsApp Web in the browser’s site settings.
- During the call, use the displayed controls for mute, camera, screen sharing, reactions, or ending the call.
For audio, use a computer with a functioning microphone and speakers or headphones; for video, you also need a camera. A headset may help reduce echo, but it is optional. Browser compatibility and specific hardware requirements are not fully detailed in Meta’s announcement.

If the call button is missing
A missing control does not necessarily mean the feature is unavailable everywhere. Meta described a gradual rollout, and access can vary by account, geography, browser, and rollout stage. Try these checks; none guarantees that an account has received the feature.
- Confirm that you are using WhatsApp Web in the intended browser profile, then reload the page. If needed, sign out and link the session again.
- Update the browser and check its microphone and camera permissions for WhatsApp Web. Operating-system privacy settings or a work or school administrator may also block access.
- Try another modern browser if permitted. Privacy extensions or strict settings can interfere with browser calling.
- If the controls still do not appear, your account may not have received the rollout. Updating WhatsApp or the browser may not activate it immediately.
- Use WhatsApp Desktop on Windows or Mac, if available, or make the call from the mobile app while waiting for Web access.
Does the phone have to stay connected?
Do not assume either that the primary phone must remain connected throughout a call or that it is never needed. WhatsApp’s linked-device behavior has changed over time, and requirements can depend on account setup and the current implementation. Link Web using the current in-product flow and follow any prompts shown there; the July 2026 announcement does not establish a universal phone-connection rule.

On a managed work or school computer, administrator policies may prevent camera or microphone access. On a shared computer, sign out when finished and avoid saving account access. Browser notifications also depend on browser and operating-system settings.
Privacy, encryption, and screen sharing
Meta says WhatsApp Web calls are end-to-end encrypted. Encryption protects call content in transit, but it does not make a compromised computer or browser safe, prevent someone nearby from viewing your screen, or stop the other participant from recording. Before sharing your screen, close or hide sensitive tabs and documents, and consider disabling notifications. A shared screen can reveal passwords, messages, or personal information. Grant camera and microphone permissions only to the intended WhatsApp Web site, and be cautious with browser extensions on a computer used for private calls.

Meta confirms group calling on Web, but its July 2026 announcement does not state a Web-specific participant limit. The figures of up to eight people on video and 32 on audio were announced for Windows and Mac desktop calling; they should not be treated as confirmed Web limits. Check the current Web interface or WhatsApp Help Center for the limit that applies to your call.

Meta says Web calls have no time limit and WhatsApp does not charge for the calling feature. Your internet provider or mobile-data plan may still charge for the connection. The announcement does not establish that every browser is supported or that every account has access on the same date.
