Telegram is the only one of the three whose cited official guidance lists Android 5.0 as a minimum. WhatsApp’s current download page and Signal’s troubleshooting guidance specify Android 6.0 or newer. That makes Telegram the first app to check on an Android 5 phone—not a universal winner for speed, battery life, or security. Check both app eligibility and whether the phone still receives security updates before choosing.
Check Android version and security support first
An app’s minimum Android version answers whether it may install; it does not tell you whether the handset is still receiving security patches. Check the phone maker’s support information for your exact model, then confirm that the app is available for that device in Google Play. App requirements can change.

If the phone runs Android 6 or newer and still gets updates
Check whether all three apps are offered for your exact device, then decide based on the people you need to reach, how you want conversations to sync, and your privacy needs. The available evidence does not establish a universal winner for responsiveness, RAM use, or battery life.
If storage is tight
Telegram documents a way to clear cached media without logging out; cloud media can be downloaded again. Telegram also says its app needs less than 100 MB of device storage, but that is the company’s claim, not an independent measurement or a comparison with WhatsApp and Signal. If animations feel sluggish
Telegram announced Power Saving Mode in March 2023, with controls to disable animations and visual effects, plus optimizations described for lower-end Android devices. Telegram cloud chats and Secret Chats are different
Telegram cloud chats sync across devices. Secret Chats are device-specific and are Telegram’s end-to-end encrypted option, according to its FAQ. If you need end-to-end encryption, check that you are using the appropriate conversation mode; the app name alone does not make an ordinary cloud chat equivalent to a Secret Chat. What is—and is not—known about performance
Telegram’s team said in its March 2023 announcement, “For Android, we’ve manually tested more than 200 device types to see how well Telegram performs and created optimized default settings to ensure all users get the best experience.” That is Telegram’s description of its own testing and settings. It is not a head-to-head comparison with WhatsApp or Signal.
No cited independent comparison establishes which of the three uses less RAM, drains less battery, takes less local storage, or responds faster on older Android phones. Results can depend on the handset, Android build, app version, message history, and cached media. Without tests on named devices under comparable conditions, a blanket performance ranking would be misleading.

A practical way to choose
- Check the Android version: open Settings and look for About phone or About device; labels vary by manufacturer. Confirm the version reported there.
- Check security support: look up the exact model on the phone maker’s support pages or update settings to see whether it still receives security updates.
- Check app availability: search for WhatsApp, Signal, and Telegram in Google Play on that handset. Confirm the live listing rather than relying only on a published minimum that may change.
- Match the app to your needs: consider which contacts use it, whether you need cross-device access, and whether a particular privacy mode is required.
- For Telegram, adjust what you can: clear cached media if storage is scarce, or try Power Saving Mode and reduced visual effects if animations are a problem.
If the phone is below the supported Android versions or no longer receives security updates, consider an upgrade only after checking the specific model’s operating-system and security-update support. No handset model is established here as a tested recommendation.
