WhatsApp Stickers vs. Telegram Stickers: Features, Pack Creation and Sharing Compared

By Freedom251 Team · · 10 min read

WhatsApp is simpler for turning a photo into a small custom pack and sending that pack directly in a conversation. Telegram offers the broader creator platform: an in-chat editor, a dedicated @Stickers mini app, external upload routes, animated formats and video stickers. Neither service’s official documentation establishes one-click transfer of an existing WhatsApp pack into Telegram, or the reverse.

The practical choice depends on what you need. Choose WhatsApp for quick photo stickers and chat-based pack sharing. Choose Telegram when you need multiple formats, external production tools, pack statistics or importing sticker files from another app.

WhatsApp and Telegram stickers at a glance

The two apps overlap on the basics: both let users make stickers from images, add creative elements and group stickers into packs. Their emphasis differs. WhatsApp’s documented workflow is built around creating a sticker from a photo, adding it to a pack and sharing that pack from a one-to-one or group chat. Telegram documents that workflow too, but adds an open platform for creators who want to upload static artwork, vector animations or video.

How to make and share stickers on WhatsApp

Check availability first

WhatsApp says custom sticker packs are available on the latest Android and iOS versions. If the sticker-creation controls do not appear, update WhatsApp before troubleshooting anything else. The help page does not state a publication year, so treat the documented labels as current guidance rather than a guarantee that every older app build has them.

Create a sticker from a photo

  1. Open an individual or group chat.
  2. Open the sticker panel from the message composer.
  3. Choose the option to create a custom sticker and select a photo from the device.
  4. Use the editor to add text, emoji or drawings. Review the crop and any transparency or cutout effect the editor applies.
  5. Send the finished sticker, or choose the option to add it to a sticker pack.

The photo-based workflow is the fastest route for an ordinary user because it does not require an external graphics application. It also keeps creation and distribution in the same chat where the sticker is being used.

Add stickers to a pack or edit an existing pack

WhatsApp’s documented pack controls let you add a sticker to a new or existing pack and edit packs you have created. A pack must contain one kind of artwork: all stickers must be static, or all must be animated. Mixing static and animated stickers in one uploaded pack is not supported by the cited help documentation.

Share a completed pack

  1. Open a chat containing the sticker tray.
  2. Open the relevant sticker pack.
  3. Tap More in the sticker tray.
  4. Choose the pack’s Send action and select the individual or group chat where you want to share it.

This sends the pack through WhatsApp rather than requiring you to send each sticker image separately. Recipients can then open the shared pack from the message and use its stickers in WhatsApp.

WhatsApp pack and file limits

The WhatsApp Help Center lists these product specifications. They are not independent laboratory measurements, and the page does not state a publication year.

Pack type Maximum file size per sticker Canvas Maximum stickers per pack Animation limit
Static 100 KB 512 × 512 pixels 30 Not applicable
Animated 500 KB 512 × 512 pixels 30 Up to 10 seconds per sticker

Keep the same type throughout a pack and compress artwork before upload if a file exceeds the applicable limit. A 512 × 512 canvas does not mean every image must fill the entire square; it is the maximum canvas specified for the documented workflow.

AI stickers are a separate WhatsApp feature

WhatsApp documents AI sticker generation separately from photo-based custom stickers. The feature is available only in limited countries, and its help page currently lists English, Indonesian, Portuguese and Spanish as supported prompt languages. Do not assume that an account with ordinary custom stickers also has AI sticker creation. Availability depends on WhatsApp’s rollout and the user’s country; see the official AI-sticker help page for the applicable controls.

How to make and share stickers on Telegram

Use Telegram’s in-chat Sticker Editor

Telegram states that any user can create, send and share custom artwork through its sticker and emoji platform. The built-in editor starts with a photo on the device, so casual users do not need to prepare a file elsewhere.

  3. Use the Sticker Editor to add text, drawings or emoji and adjust the artwork.
  4. Send the sticker or add it to a new pack when prompted.
  5. Share the resulting sticker or pack in Telegram chats.

Telegram’s documentation describes this as an in-app route, but it does not provide a complete device-by-device availability matrix. A control may therefore appear at a different location, or roll out at a different time, on a particular Telegram client.

Manage packs with the @Stickers mini app

For users who want more control than the chat editor provides, Telegram documents the @Stickers mini app. It manages sticker and emoji packs and provides usage statistics. This is useful when you publish a themed pack and want to see which items are used, rather than relying only on what appears in your own chats.

The mini app is also the practical management layer for creator workflows: you can create a pack, add artwork, assign the relevant emoji and maintain the pack as new files are produced. Telegram’s documentation does not claim that the mini app converts a WhatsApp pack automatically; it is a Telegram-side management tool.

Upload artwork made outside Telegram

Telegram supports several creator-oriented routes in addition to its editor:

  • Static stickers: prepare PNG or WEBP files externally, then upload them to a pack.
  • Vector animations: create TGS files, including workflows based on vector animation software, and upload the rendered result.
  • Video stickers: prepare WEBM files using the VP9 codec and upload them without an audio stream.
  • Files from other apps: Telegram documents importing sticker files from other applications, allowing an existing artwork library to be reused when it meets Telegram’s format rules.

External creation is optional. Telegram’s ordinary in-chat editor is sufficient for a photo, caption, drawing or emoji. External tools matter when you need controlled typography, repeatable branding, frame-by-frame animation or a video-based sticker.

Telegram’s technical requirements

Telegram lists separate specifications for each artwork type:

Type Required format and limits
Static image PNG or WEBP. One side must be exactly 512 pixels; the other side must be 512 pixels or less.
TGS vector animation 512 × 512 canvas; no more than 3 seconds; must loop; no more than 64 KB after rendering; 60 frames per second.
Video sticker WEBM using VP9; no more than 3 seconds; up to 30 frames per second; recommended size no more than 256 KB; no audio stream.

The limits are Telegram’s published product specifications. The shorter three-second animation and video limits mean a Telegram animation pack may need a different cut from a WhatsApp animated pack, whose documented duration limit is up to 10 seconds.

Sharing, importing and cross-app portability

What WhatsApp sharing actually does

WhatsApp’s documented Send action shares a created pack through a WhatsApp chat. It is a convenient distribution method for people already using WhatsApp, but it does not export a neutral pack file for every other messaging service.

What Telegram importing actually does

Telegram’s documentation says sticker files can be imported from other apps. That means files can be reused when they are available and satisfy Telegram’s format requirements. It is not the same as promising that a WhatsApp pack link, pack identifier or complete metadata set will convert automatically.

There is no documented one-click WhatsApp-to-Telegram conversion

Neither the cited WhatsApp page nor Telegram’s sticker documentation establishes direct transfer of an existing pack between the services. If you want the same artwork in both apps, keep the original image or animation files, then create a separate pack in each service. Rebuild the pack’s metadata, emoji associations and ordering for the destination app instead of assuming that a shared pack message will work across platforms.

Goal Most reliable approach Why
Send a few custom reactions to WhatsApp contacts Use WhatsApp’s photo editor and send the stickers in the chat. It avoids external file preparation.
Give a WhatsApp group a complete themed pack Add the stickers to a WhatsApp pack and use the sticker tray’s More → Send flow. The documented sharing action is designed for this case.
Publish static artwork plus animated or video variants Use Telegram and prepare each format to Telegram’s individual requirements. Telegram documents all three creator routes.
Reuse files made for another sticker app Import the original files into Telegram, then rebuild the pack as needed. Telegram documents file importing, not universal pack conversion.
Maintain the same collection in both apps Keep a master folder of source files and create separate packs in WhatsApp and Telegram. There is no documented direct pack transfer.

Which service is better for your sticker workflow?

Choose WhatsApp for the shortest path from photo to chat

  • You mainly want stickers made from phone photos.
  • Your recipients already use WhatsApp.
  • You prefer editing with text, emoji and drawings in the same place you send messages.
  • You need a pack of up to 30 static stickers or up to 30 animated stickers under WhatsApp’s stated limits.

WhatsApp’s strength is low friction: open a chat, create the sticker, add it to a pack and share that pack from the tray. The trade-off is a narrower documented creator pipeline and stricter separation between static and animated packs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Telegram for a creator-oriented sticker platform

  • You want a dedicated pack-management tool and usage statistics.
  • You plan to upload artwork created in a graphics or animation program.
  • You need TGS vector animation or WEBM video stickers in addition to static PNG or WEBP files.
  • You need to import sticker files from another application.

Telegram’s advantage is breadth. Its limits are more specialized, so a creator must pay attention to codecs, frame rates, canvas dimensions, looping and rendered file size. The in-chat editor remains available when those requirements are unnecessary.

Troubleshooting common sticker problems

WhatsApp does not show custom-sticker controls

  1. Confirm that WhatsApp is updated to the latest Android or iOS version.
  2. Open a real individual or group chat and then open the sticker panel; the creation control is documented from that panel.
  3. Check whether you are trying to use AI sticker generation rather than ordinary custom stickers. AI availability is country- and language-limited.
  4. If a pack upload fails, verify that every item is static or every item is animated and that each file meets the relevant size, canvas and duration limit.

A WhatsApp animated pack is rejected

Check the per-sticker limit of 500 KB, the 512 × 512-pixel canvas, the 30-sticker pack maximum and the 10-second animation maximum. Also make sure no static sticker has been mixed into the animated pack.

A Telegram file will not upload

  • For static artwork, use PNG or WEBP and make one side exactly 512 pixels while keeping the other at 512 pixels or less.
  • For TGS animation, verify the 512 × 512 canvas, looping behavior, three-second maximum, 64 KB rendered-size maximum and 60 FPS.
  • For video stickers, verify WEBM with VP9, a three-second maximum, no more than 30 FPS, no audio stream and a recommended size of 256 KB or less.

When a file was made for WhatsApp, do not assume its dimensions, duration or codec satisfy Telegram’s separate rules. Re-export from the source project when possible rather than repeatedly compressing an already compressed file.

A practical two-platform workflow

  1. Keep source artwork. Save the original photo, transparent image, animation project or video before creating an app-specific sticker.
  2. Make the WhatsApp version. Use the chat sticker editor for quick photos, or prepare static and animated files within WhatsApp’s stated limits. Keep static and animated items in separate packs.
  3. Make the Telegram version. Use the in-chat editor for simple work, or prepare PNG, WEBP, TGS or WEBM files according to Telegram’s requirements.
  4. Recreate pack metadata. Add the appropriate emoji associations, names and ordering separately in each app.
  5. Share through the destination service. Use WhatsApp’s sticker-tray sharing action for WhatsApp recipients and Telegram’s pack or chat sharing for Telegram recipients.
  6. Maintain a master library. If you revise a character, logo or phrase, update the source file and export a new version for each service rather than trying to move the finished pack between apps.

Bottom line: simple sharing or broader creation?

WhatsApp is the more direct option for personal stickers: its photo editor, pack controls and chat-based sharing keep the process compact. Telegram is the more capable option for creators who need external files, multiple animation formats, importing from another app or pack-usage statistics. Use the same original artwork in both services if you wish, but plan on creating and maintaining two destination-specific packs; the official documentation does not promise automatic cross-platform pack transfer.
