WhatsApp’s current English-language iPhone Help Center page says a Status video can be up to 90 seconds long. That is the clearest current figure, but WhatsApp does not publish a universal rollout table covering every phone, app version, or account. If your Status composer accepts a shorter clip, use the trim control shown in your own app. WhatsApp also says Status does not support HD media, uploaded quality may be lower than the original, and its official Status instructions do not state a maximum file size.
The current WhatsApp Status video limit
The current English-language iPhone instructions in the WhatsApp Help Center allow a Status video of up to 90 seconds. The page was retrieved on October 13, 2026. This is a client-specific Help Center statement, not proof that every device receives exactly the same limit at the same time.

WhatsApp’s KaiOS Help Center instructions also state a 90-second maximum. That corroborates the figure on another platform, but the available documentation still does not define a complete matrix for Android, iPhone, KaiOS, regional rollouts, beta builds, or staged account changes. The most reliable test for your account is the trim interface that appears when you select a video for Status.
Why older 30-second and 60-second answers keep appearing
Older articles and forum posts commonly mention 30 or 60 seconds. Those figures may describe an earlier Status limit, a particular app version, or a different feature. WhatsApp has changed Status behavior over time, so an old answer should not override the limit shown by your current composer. A 60-second figure can also refer to the music tool: WhatsApp’s 2025 music announcement says a selected music segment can run for up to 60 seconds on a video Status. That is the maximum music excerpt, not the maximum length of the underlying video.

How to post a video and trim it to the allowed length
WhatsApp’s official Status instructions describe the process in the app rather than requiring a separate editor.
- Open WhatsApp and go to the Status area. Depending on your client, this may be labeled Updates with Status entries inside it.
- Choose the option to add a new Status and select a video from your phone.
- When the preview and editing screen appears, locate the timeline slider beneath the video.
- Drag the beginning and ending handles until the selected segment fits the maximum accepted by your account. The composer is the practical authority if it accepts less than 90 seconds.
- Add a caption or other available elements, then tap the send or share control to publish.
The trim step does not establish a file-size policy. It only changes the duration of the segment you are publishing. A clip can be short and still fail if its encoding, container, storage access, or upload connection causes a problem.
Which video formats does Status support?
The Status instructions identify 3GP and MPEG-4 as supported video formats. “MPEG-4” describes a family of files commonly seen with an MP4 extension; the extension alone does not guarantee that every codec or encoding variant will be accepted.

If a video will not appear in the picker
- Confirm that the file is a 3GP or MPEG-4 video recognized by your phone’s media library.
- Check that WhatsApp has permission to access photos and videos.
- Move a locally stored copy onto the device if the original is only in cloud storage or on a removable drive.
- Try exporting a new MPEG-4 copy from your phone’s editor, then reopen the Status picker.
These are troubleshooting steps, not additional WhatsApp guarantees. The official material names the two formats but does not publish a complete codec, frame-rate, audio-track, or container compatibility table.
Quality: why a Status video may look blurry
WhatsApp’s official wording is explicit: HD media isn’t supported for statuses.
The same Help Center instructions warn that The quality of media, such as images, GIFs, videos, and pictures uploaded into WhatsApp Status may be lower than the original version.
That means a high-resolution source can be reduced or otherwise processed when it becomes a Status. WhatsApp’s published Status guidance reviewed here does not specify a target output resolution, bitrate, frame rate, compression percentage, or codec profile. No particular resolution can therefore be promised to survive the upload unchanged.

Practical ways to reduce avoidable quality loss
- Start with the clearest original available instead of repeatedly exporting the same clip, since every extra encode can remove detail before WhatsApp processes it.
- Keep the important subject near the center and use good lighting; compression artifacts are more noticeable in dark, noisy footage and fine text.
- Trim unnecessary footage in the Status composer so you are not uploading a longer source than needed.
- If the upload repeatedly fails, try exporting a smaller compatible MPEG-4 copy. This is a practical troubleshooting suggestion, not an official size threshold or quality workaround.
There is no supported “HD Status” switch established by the official instructions. A phone camera’s 4K setting, an editor’s quality preset, or a third-party claim about a preferred bitrate cannot change WhatsApp’s statement that HD media is not supported for Status.

Is there a WhatsApp Status video file-size limit?
No official maximum file size is stated in the Status sources reviewed. WhatsApp documents the 90-second duration on the current iPhone page, supported 3GP and MPEG-4 formats, and the quality caveat, but it does not provide a megabyte ceiling, output bitrate, or compression figure for Status uploads.
Some unofficial pages claim a 16 MB limit, while other third-party explanations give different numbers. Those claims conflict and should not be presented as WhatsApp policy. They may come from older versions, particular clients, regional behavior, or confusion with limits for videos sent in chats. The official Status documentation does not confirm any of them.

What to do when a large file will not upload
- Check the video’s duration and trim it in the Status composer first.
- Verify that the source is a supported 3GP or MPEG-4 video and that it plays normally on the device.
- Export a shorter or smaller compatible copy as a test. Treat the result as troubleshooting evidence for your account, not proof of a published WhatsApp limit.
- Retry on a stable connection and ensure the phone has free storage for temporary processing.
- Update WhatsApp through your normal app store if the composer behaves differently from the current Help Center instructions.
If a smaller file succeeds, that tells you the previous upload exceeded some practical constraint in your current environment, but it does not reveal a universal megabyte maximum. Client version, operating system, available storage, network conditions, and server-side rollout can all affect an upload.
Keep the different limits separate
| Constraint | What the official material establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Video duration | Up to 90 seconds on the current English-language iPhone Help Center page, retrieved October 13, 2026; a KaiOS Help Center article also states 90 seconds. | A universal limit for every device, version, account, or rollout cohort. |
| Trimming | The Status composer lets you select a video and drag the timeline slider to trim it. | That trimming control does not define a file-size ceiling. |
| Formats | 3GP and MPEG-4 are named in the Status instructions. | A complete list of accepted codecs, profiles, frame rates, or audio configurations. |
| Quality | “HD media isn’t supported for statuses,” and uploaded media may be lower quality than the original. | A fixed output resolution, bitrate, compression percentage, or guaranteed preservation of 4K or another source setting. |
| File size | No maximum Status video size is stated in the official sources reviewed. | Unofficial figures such as 16 MB as an official policy. |
| Status lifetime | A Status update disappears after 24 hours. | That expiry changes the upload duration or file-size rules; it does not. |
| Music on video Status | The 2025 music announcement allows a selected music segment of up to 60 seconds for a video. | A 60-second overall video limit; music length and video length are separate. |
Status limits versus videos sent in chats
WhatsApp can apply different processing and attachment rules to Status posts and chat messages. A number quoted for sending a video to an individual or group is not automatically a Status rule. Likewise, a chat composer may offer a document-upload route with different behavior from the Status composer. Check the control you are actually using: Status has its own duration trim interface and its own media processing.
This distinction explains many contradictory online answers. A writer may accurately describe a chat attachment limit while a reader is trying to publish a Status, or may quote a historical Status rule that no longer matches the current app.

A quick decision guide for common problems
“My 75-second video is rejected.”
The current iPhone Help Center figure is 90 seconds, so duration alone should fit that documented limit. Open the Status composer and inspect the selected range. If your account’s slider stops at a shorter point, follow that in-app limit, then check format, permissions, storage, and connection.
“My 2-minute video is too long.”
Trim it to the maximum your composer permits. On the current English-language iPhone instructions, that means no more than 90 seconds for a single video Status. To share the complete recording, publish multiple sequential Status clips if your app permits them, or send the full file in a chat using the chat feature’s own rules.
“The video looks soft after posting.”
That behavior is consistent with WhatsApp’s warning that Status does not support HD media and may lower quality. There is no official resolution or bitrate setting in the cited instructions that guarantees a sharper result. Use a clean original, avoid repeated re-encoding, and keep important detail large and well lit.

“I need the exact megabyte limit.”
WhatsApp’s official Status material reviewed here does not provide one. Treat third-party numbers as unverified, and use trimming or a smaller compatible export only as practical tests when an upload fails.
“Why did music stop at 60 seconds?”
The 60-second allowance applies to the music segment selected for a video Status in WhatsApp’s 2025 music feature announcement. It is independent of the 90-second video-duration figure documented on the iPhone Help Center page.
What to verify before relying on a limit
- Check the Help Center instructions for your operating system and language, since the documented 90-second figure is tied to specific current pages.
- Look at the trim slider in the Status composer on the account that will publish the video.
- Confirm the file is a supported 3GP or MPEG-4 video.
- Plan for quality reduction: Status does not support HD media, and the uploaded copy may not match the original.
- Do not treat an internet-posted megabyte number as official unless WhatsApp publishes that number for Status.
For the evidence currently available, the safest concise answer is: a Status video can be up to 90 seconds on the current English-language iPhone Help Center page; 3GP and MPEG-4 are the named formats; HD media is not supported and quality may be reduced; and WhatsApp has not stated an official maximum file size for Status videos.
