WhatsApp gives you three Status audiences: My contacts, My contacts except…, and Only share with…. Set the audience before publishing, because a later privacy change does not alter a Status that is already live. Mentions and group posts are important exceptions.
What WhatsApp Status privacy controls do
Status privacy controls decide which contacts can view the photos, videos, text, GIFs or voice updates you publish in Status. WhatsApp does not offer an Everyone audience for Status. If you have never changed the setting, Status is shared with all of your contacts by default, according to WhatsApp’s privacy-settings guidance.

The setting applies to future Status posts. It is not an edit permission for a post that is already available, and it does not override special cases such as a person or group you mention.

Windows desktop and WhatsApp Web
- Open WhatsApp and select Status. Depending on the current interface, Status may be presented inside the Updates area.
- Select More.
- Choose Status Privacy.
- Pick one of the three audiences, select the contacts required by that choice, and confirm.
Those labels and their position are documented in the WhatsApp Help Center’s Status privacy instructions. WhatsApp can change labels or navigation between desktop, web and mobile releases, so look for the Status or Updates audience/privacy control if your screen differs.

Android and iPhone
On a phone, open the Updates area (or the tab labelled Status in an older layout), then open the Status privacy or audience control. Select the same three choices described below. The exact icon or menu placement can vary by app version; the audience names are the useful part to match.
Choose among the three audiences

The first option is convenient for routine updates. The second is useful when most contacts should see a post but a few should not. The third is the safer starting point for sensitive or highly specific updates because access is limited to a named set.
Set privacy before you publish
Make the audience selection before opening the composer or immediately before tapping the publish control. A practical sequence is:

- Open Updates/Status and go to Status Privacy.
- Select My contacts, My contacts except…, or Only share with….
- For an exclusion or allowlist, search for each contact, select or clear the check box, and save the selection.
- Return to Status and create the photo, video, text, GIF or voice update.
- Check the audience indicator shown by your app, then publish.

Changing the setting does not change an existing Status
Audience changes are prospective. For example, if a Status was posted while My contacts was active, switching to Only share with… afterward does not retroactively remove that already-shared Status from people who were eligible when it was posted. Likewise, adding someone to an exclusion list after publication does not rewrite the audience of that post.
Set the desired audience first, then publish the update. If an already-shared post has the wrong audience, changing the setting prepares the audience for your next post; it does not provide a documented way to revise the old post’s original audience.
Mentions can override the ordinary audience
Individual mentions
A person mentioned in a Status can view it even if that person is outside the audience you selected. This is an intentional exception to the normal contact filter. Before mentioning someone, treat the mention as an invitation for that person to receive the Status.
Group mentions
If you mention a group, all members of that group can see the Status. That can be substantially broader than an allowlist containing only a few individuals. Mention availability is rolling out in phases, and WhatsApp documents a maximum of five mentions in a Status in its Status mentions guidance; the feature may not appear for every account at the same time.

Resharing after a mention
People or group members who receive a Status through a mention may reshare its content to their own audience. Resharing can therefore extend the content’s reach beyond your original selection. WhatsApp says that reshared content does not show the original poster’s name, profile information or phone number, but the content itself can still travel to the resharing person’s viewers.
Posting a Status to a group is a separate exception
A Status posted to a group is visible to every member of that group regardless of the Status privacy setting. This rule is different from choosing an audience for a normal Status update. If a group contains people you would normally exclude, do not assume the exclusion list will protect a group post; the group-membership rule takes precedence.
When deciding whether to post to a group, check the current membership rather than relying on your personal Status audience. A recently added member can be able to view the group Status even if that person is absent from your usual audience list.
Read receipts affect what you can see about viewers
Status privacy determines who may view a post; read receipts determine whether view activity is visible to the poster. WhatsApp explains in its status visibility guidance that if either relevant user has read receipts turned off, the poster may not be able to see that the Status was viewed.

Consequently, a viewer list is not guaranteed to be complete. An absent name does not prove that the person did not open the Status, especially when read receipts are disabled on either side. This is separate from the audience selector: changing the selector cannot force a view receipt to appear.

WhatsApp also lets you hide or unhide another person’s Status from your own Updates/Status view. That action changes what appears in your interface; it does not stop that person from seeing your Status. To prevent someone from viewing your updates, use your own My contacts except… exclusion list or omit the person from Only share with….
The distinction is easy to miss because both actions can be described informally as “hiding a Status.” The Hide and unhide statuses instructions cover the viewing-side control, while Status Privacy controls the audience for posts you create.
Status lifetime and what privacy cannot do
Photos and videos posted as Status disappear from view after 24 hours, according to WhatsApp’s Status creation and sharing guidance. The 24-hour lifetime does not cancel the exceptions above during that period: a mentioned person, a mentioned group’s members, or members of a group receiving a group Status can still view it under the applicable rule.
Expiration also does not undo a copy someone made or reshared while the Status was available. For sensitive material, choose a narrow audience and avoid mentions that broaden access.
Which setting fits common situations?
Everyday update for your whole contact list
Choose My contacts when you are comfortable with all contacts seeing the update. Remember that a group post and mentions still follow their separate visibility rules.
Most contacts can see it, but specific people cannot
Choose My contacts except…, then select every person to exclude. This works best when the excluded group is small and stable. Recheck the list before posting material that is personal, work-related or time-sensitive.

Only a project team, family subset or event group should see it
Choose Only share with… and select the intended recipients. This allowlist reduces accidental exposure from newly added contacts, but it does not override a group mention or a Status posted directly to a group.
You are unsure who should receive a sensitive update
Do not publish until the audience is explicit. Use the allowlist, avoid mentioning people or groups, and do not post the item to a group whose membership you have not checked.
Troubleshoot an unexpected viewer or missing viewer
- Someone you excluded saw the post: Check whether the post was created before you changed privacy, whether you mentioned that person, or whether the Status was posted to a group they belong to.
- A group saw the post despite an allowlist: Confirm whether the group was mentioned or the update was posted to that group. Group members are covered by the documented exception.
- The viewer list does not show everyone you expected: Read receipts may be off for you or the other user, so the view may not be reported.
- You cannot find “Status Privacy”: Open the Updates/Status area and inspect its More menu or audience control. Desktop and web use the documented Status → More → Status Privacy path, while mobile labels can differ by release.
- You hid someone’s Status but they still see yours: Unhiding or hiding their updates changes only your view. Add them to your exclusion list or remove them from your allowlist.
- A mention option is missing: WhatsApp says Status mentions are rolling out in phases, so availability can vary by account and app version.
Use the controls deliberately
Status privacy is an audience choice, not a universal delete, recall or view-tracking feature. Select the audience before each sensitive post, treat mentions and group posts as explicit expansions of access, and interpret viewer information with the read-receipts limitation in mind. No separate phone accessory, VPN or security package is required; the documented controls are built into WhatsApp.
