WhatsApp Business away messages and scheduled marketing messages are different tools. An away message is an automatic reply triggered when a customer contacts your business while the feature, schedule, and recipient rules permit it. A scheduled marketing message is an outbound business message that you prepare in advance and set to send to a chosen audience at a future date and time. Away messages explain when you are unavailable; scheduled messages deliver a planned offer, announcement, reminder, or other business communication.
The official WhatsApp instructions reviewed do not establish a general-purpose scheduling feature for ordinary personal chats. The scheduling workflow described here applies to WhatsApp Business marketing messages.

An away message is an automatic response for periods when your business cannot respond normally. The customer’s incoming message is the trigger. WhatsApp Business checks whether the away feature is turned on, whether the current time fits the selected schedule, and whether the customer is included in your recipient rules. Only when those conditions match does the automatic response apply.

Typical uses
- Tell customers that the shop is closed and state when replies normally resume.
- Acknowledge a message received outside staffed hours.
- Explain that a small team is temporarily unavailable.
- Provide a response expectation without promising an immediate human reply.
The feature is reactive rather than promotional. It does not send a message merely because a clock reaches a certain time, and it does not start a conversation with people who have not contacted the business.
How to set up an away message
- Open WhatsApp Business and go to the Tools tab.
- Select Away message.
- Turn on the away-message feature.
- Edit the automatic reply so it says what customers need to know, such as your next response window.
- Choose a schedule.
- Choose which recipients should receive the reply.
- Save the settings and keep the device connected to the internet when replies need to be sent.
App labels can vary slightly by release, but the documented route begins in WhatsApp Business Tools and then Away message.
Choose the right schedule
WhatsApp Business lists three schedule choices:
- Always send: Apply the away reply whenever the other conditions, including recipient rules, permit it.
- Custom schedule: Apply the reply during a period you define. This is useful for a temporary closure, holiday, training day, or one-off staffing gap.
- Outside of business hours: Apply the reply when the current time falls outside the opening hours stored in the business profile.
The outside-hours option depends on your business-hours information being set first. If those hours are missing or wrong, the automatic reply cannot reliably reflect when the business is open. Review the business profile before selecting this schedule, especially if your hours change by day.

Choose recipients deliberately
The recipient setting determines who can receive the automatic reply. The documented choices include:
- Everyone.
- People who are not in your address book.
- Everyone except selected contacts.
- Selected contacts only.
Recipient filters are useful when the same business number serves different groups. For example, a temporary closure notice may be appropriate for all new inquiries, while a narrower internal test can be limited to selected contacts. Check the selected audience before saving; a correct schedule with an unintended recipient rule can make the feature appear broken.

Write an effective away reply
Keep the message specific enough to answer the customer’s immediate question without implying that a staff member is currently typing. Include the business name if the number is shared, the next likely response period, and an alternative only when one genuinely exists. A simple structure is:
- State that the business is currently unavailable.
- Give the expected response window or reopening time.
- Explain what the customer should do if the matter is urgent, if an approved alternative exists.
Do not describe an away message as a scheduled campaign. Its job is expectation-setting after an inbound message.
What a scheduled WhatsApp Business marketing message does
The separate marketing-message workflow lets a business prepare an outbound communication and select a future date and time. The message can be an offer, product announcement, reminder, event notice, or another planned business update. The business chooses the audience before scheduling and can review the message and its price in the documented flow.
Because the message is outbound, the recipient does not have to begin a chat at the scheduled moment. That is the defining difference from an away reply. The feature is intended for business communication and should not be presented as evidence that ordinary personal WhatsApp chats support general message scheduling.
How to schedule a marketing message
- Create a marketing message in the WhatsApp Business workflow.
- Choose the audience that should receive it.
- Review the message content and the displayed price.
- Select the future date and time.
- Confirm the schedule after checking the audience, wording, timing, and payment details.
Payment and funds
The documented workflow requires a payment method and available funds. Review the price shown before confirming the scheduled send. A scheduled message is therefore not equivalent to a free automatic away reply: the marketing flow includes a charge review and payment setup.

Message review
WhatsApp says marketing messages are subject to review. Approval is not the same as scheduling: a message can be prepared for a future time while still being subject to the platform’s review process. Allow for that distinction when planning a time-sensitive announcement, and do not promise customers an exact delivery time beyond what the app confirms.

The help instructions say the device needs an internet connection when the scheduled message is due to send. If it is offline, the instructions describe retry attempts. Keep the business device connected around the planned send window and verify the result in the app rather than assuming that creating a schedule guarantees delivery.
Regional availability
The marketing-message help page notes that business broadcasts may not yet be available in some countries. It does not identify those countries. Availability can therefore depend on the account’s location and the current rollout. Check the feature inside WhatsApp Business for the relevant account before promising a campaign date.
Which feature should you use?
Use an away message when the customer contacts you first
Choose the away feature when the problem is response coverage. If customers send messages during a closure or outside opening hours, the automatic reply can acknowledge the contact and explain when a human response is expected. Configure business hours when the reply should follow the profile’s opening schedule.
Use a scheduled marketing message when you need to initiate communication
Choose the marketing workflow when the business has a planned communication that should go to a selected audience at a future time. Examples include a sale announcement, a reminder about an event, or a product update. The workflow includes audience selection, a price review, payment setup, and platform review.

Use both when the situations are different
A business can need both tools without treating them as interchangeable. For example, schedule an announcement for the morning of a planned promotion, then use an away message outside staffed hours to explain when questions about that promotion will be answered. The scheduled message reaches the chosen audience according to its campaign plan; the away reply handles customers who contact the business while staff are unavailable.

Trigger versus timetable
The away feature is event-driven: a customer message must arrive while the configured conditions apply. The marketing feature is time-driven: the business selects a future date and time for an outbound send. Changing the clock does not turn an away reply into a campaign, and receiving a customer message does not create a scheduled marketing send.
Availability notice versus promotional communication
An away reply answers the customer’s immediate uncertainty about response timing. A scheduled marketing message communicates something the business has decided to announce. Mixing the purposes can produce confusing copy, such as using a closure notice as if it were a promotion or expecting a campaign to answer individual support questions.
Recipient logic
Away messages use recipient filters built around contacts and exclusions. The marketing flow has an audience-selection step for the planned communication. Confirm the audience in each workflow independently; selecting recipients for an away reply does not select the audience for a future marketing message.

Setup dependencies
The outside-business-hours away schedule depends on business hours in the profile. The marketing workflow depends on payment setup, available funds, message review, and feature availability for the account’s country. These dependencies explain why one tool may be ready while the other is unavailable.
Examples of the difference
Example: evening customer inquiry
A customer writes at 9:30 p.m., after the business has closed. An active away message configured for outside business hours can reply automatically, provided the customer falls within the selected recipient rule. No future campaign has been created; the incoming message is what triggers the response.
Example: next-day product announcement
The business prepares an announcement, selects its intended audience, reviews the displayed price, and schedules it for the next morning. The message is planned to go out at that time even if no recipient has recently started a chat. Payment, review, connectivity, and regional availability still apply.
Example: temporary closure
A business closes for two days and wants every incoming inquiry to receive the same notice. A custom-schedule away message is the appropriate tool. If the business also wants to tell a selected audience about a reopening offer, that separate outbound communication belongs in the scheduled marketing workflow.

An away reply is not appearing
- Confirm that the away-message switch is on.
- Check whether the current time fits the selected option: always, custom schedule, or outside business hours.
- If outside-business-hours is selected, review the hours stored in the business profile, including the day of the week.
- Check whether the customer is included by the recipient rule.
- Verify that the device has an active internet connection when the reply should be sent.
- Send a controlled test from a contact that clearly matches the selected recipient group.
The reply is sent at the wrong time
- Recheck the business profile’s opening hours when using the outside-hours option.
- Inspect the start and end values for a custom schedule.
- Check the device’s date, time, and time-zone settings before testing again.
- Make sure a temporary schedule was not left active after a closure ended.
A scheduled marketing message cannot be created
- Confirm that the marketing-message or business-broadcast option is available for the account’s country.
- Check that a payment method is configured and that sufficient funds are available.
- Review the audience and message for any in-app warning or required correction.
- Remember that marketing messages are subject to review; a message may not be immediately cleared for sending.
The scheduled send appears delayed or incomplete
- Keep the device connected to the internet around the scheduled time.
- If the device was offline, allow the retry behavior described in the help instructions and then check the message status in the app.
- Confirm the selected date and time before creating another schedule, so you do not send a duplicate.
- Check whether the message is still under review or whether the app reports a payment or availability issue.
What personal WhatsApp users should know
The official material covered here describes away replies and scheduled marketing messages in WhatsApp Business. It does not establish a general-purpose scheduled-message feature for ordinary personal chats. Do not infer that a personal account can schedule any message simply because a business account can schedule a marketing communication.
Pre-send checklist for businesses
- Decide whether the communication is a response to an incoming message or an outbound announcement.
- For an away reply, choose the schedule and verify the recipient filter.
- For outside-hours behavior, set and review business hours in the profile.
- For a marketing message, confirm the audience, displayed price, payment method, and available funds.
- Read the final message exactly as a customer will see it.
- Check that the device will have internet access at the relevant time.
- Verify that the feature is available for the account’s country and that any required review is complete or progressing.
The simplest rule is reliable: use an away message to respond automatically after a customer reaches out during a configured unavailable period; use a scheduled marketing message to send a prepared business communication to a chosen audience at a future time. They solve different timing problems and have different prerequisites.
