As of 16 October 2026, the matching design is an independent UX concept by Poojitha Baddigam, who describes it as a personal proposal rather than an existing WhatsApp capability. Neither WhatsApp nor Meta has announced a rollout date, supported country, or beta version for such a tool.
What the alleged WhatsApp feature is supposed to do
The concept imagines a dedicated Request Location control that would let you ask a contact to share their location without composing a custom message. That is the entire basis for the “better way to ask ‘Where are you?’” wording: a shortcut from a chat to a location request.

There is no authoritative WhatsApp or Meta announcement confirming that workflow. Reports indexed by WABetaInfo in the available material discuss WhatsApp Status changes, including sharing Status with recently contacted unsaved numbers and controls for resharing; they do not verify a location-request control. No reliable statistic exists for testing, adoption, or rollout of the alleged feature.

It matches an Apple Messages action
Apple’s official Messages documentation describes sending a message that ends with “Where are you?” and then tapping Request Location. That is an Apple Messages workflow, not a WhatsApp feature. Similar wording can therefore come from a cross-platform comparison, a design mock-up, or an unverified rumor that was presented as product news.

The concept is not a product announcement
Baddigam’s post labels the interface a personal UX concept. A concept can illustrate how WhatsApp might reduce friction, but it does not establish that engineers built the feature, that it is in a test build, or that it will ship. Screenshots or interface renderings without an official WhatsApp source should be treated as proposals rather than evidence of a coming release.
What WhatsApp officially documents today
Status
WhatsApp’s official Status page says users can share photos, videos, voice notes, and text. Status posts disappear after 24 hours; people choose who can see each post and can mention contacts. The page’s message is “Your status is yours to share.” None of those documented controls is a one-tap request for another person’s location.

Voice and video calls
WhatsApp’s official calling page says voice and video calls are free, although mobile-data charges may apply. Calls are end-to-end encrypted, work across iOS, Android, and the web, and support one-to-one and group conversations. Calling availability does not imply a location-request function inside a chat.

In a June 2025 newsroom announcement, Meta said the Updates tab contains Status and Channels and reported that 1.5 billion people used the tab per day globally at that time. Meta wrote, “We believe the Updates tab is the right place to introduce that,” in the context of its Updates-tab plans. That announcement did not announce a “Where are you?” request control.

Can you send a one-tap request for someone’s live location now?
Not through a verified WhatsApp Request Location button. To ask someone, you must use an ordinary chat message and have the other person choose WhatsApp’s existing location-sharing options themselves. A request is not the same as a location share: the recipient must consent and decide whether to send a one-time location or, where available in their app, use live-location sharing.
Because the alleged control is unconfirmed, there is also no established information about consent prompts, stop-sharing controls, expiry time, platform support, rollout geography, or whether it would appear first in beta or stable builds. Those are the details to check if WhatsApp eventually publishes a real announcement.

How to verify a future “Request Location” claim
- Check WhatsApp or Meta first. Look for an announcement or help-page update from the companies, not only a screenshot or repost.
- Identify the exact build. A genuine test report should name the operating system, app version, and whether the feature is in a beta channel.
- Look for a user-consent flow. A legitimate location request should explain what the recipient approves, whether sharing is one-time or live, and how to stop it.
- Check geography and timing. WhatsApp frequently stages releases, so a feature shown for one country or test group would not prove general availability.
- Distinguish a concept from a release. If the creator calls the design a concept, treat it as an idea until WhatsApp confirms implementation.
What to expect if WhatsApp builds it
The useful comparison would be between a request shortcut and today’s manual message: whether the request produces a one-time pin or live location, how long a share lasts, how either person stops it, which platforms support it, and where it rolls out. Until WhatsApp publishes those specifications, claims about a launch date, supported regions, or a particular beta number are unsupported.
For now, the accurate answer to “Where is the new WhatsApp ‘Where are you?’ feature?” is that there is no confirmed feature to find. The matching Request Location design is a personal concept, while the similarly named action documented by Apple belongs to Messages.
