In India, WhatsApp can now recharge a prepaid mobile number on Jio, Airtel, or Vi without sending you to an operator app. Meta announced the feature on April 29, 2026, and said it is rolling out in phases on Android and iOS. If you cannot see the option yet, the most likely explanation is that it has not reached your account, not that your number is unsupported.
Which numbers and accounts are covered
The feature is limited to prepaid mobile connections in India. Meta’s announcement names Jio, Airtel, and Vi. WhatsApp’s Help Center page, “How to recharge your mobile number,” lists the same supported operator as Vodafone. Both sources refer to the same operator, so the difference is naming, not coverage.

Two access conditions matter. First, the rollout is gradual, so the option may appear on some accounts before others. Second, the Help Center notes that plans vary by region. A number may be supported while a particular plan, or the operator’s plan list in your circle, does not appear.

Meta says users can recharge their own number or a number belonging to a friend or family member. In its launch announcement, Ravi Garg, Director, Business Messaging, Meta India, said: “By bringing recharges directly into WhatsApp, we are making it easier for people to stay connected without having to switch between multiple apps.” That is Meta’s description of its intent. It is not independent evidence that the feature is faster or cheaper than operator apps or other payment apps.

How to recharge a number step by step
Meta’s launch instructions and the Help Center describe the same basic sequence, with the Help Center giving more detail on the UPI route. Labels and screen order can differ between app versions, so follow what your app displays.
- Open WhatsApp and tap the ₹ icon to open Payments Home.
- Choose Mobile Prepaid Recharge. The Help Center calls this entry Mobile recharge.
- Select the number to recharge: your own, or a friend’s or family member’s.
- Confirm the operator and, where requested, the circle or region. Plans are set regionally, so this step determines which plans you see.
- Browse the plans and select the one you want.
- Review the bill and choose a payment method. Meta’s announcement lists UPI, debit card, and credit card. The Help Center’s detailed instructions describe UPI, so that is the route documented step by step. Which options appear can depend on your flow.
- For UPI, enter your UPI PIN to authenticate, then confirm the payment.
- Check the in-app confirmation screen and your transaction history.
Meta describes the confirmation as producing the recharge inside WhatsApp. That does not guarantee the recharge is instant in every case, and it does not guarantee that a given plan will be offered every time you open the screen.
Recharging someone else’s number
The number-selection step is where this happens. Because plans depend on operator and circle, select the operator and circle of the number you are topping up, not your own. If the friend’s or relative’s connection is with a different operator, the plan list will change accordingly.

Payment methods and UPI limits
The Help Center’s UPI instructions are the most specific documentation available for this feature. Standard UPI transaction limits apply. The Help Center describes ₹1 lakh per day as typical for most users, noting that banks may set lower internal limits. That figure is a general UPI description from WhatsApp’s Help Center, with no publication date stated, not a limit guaranteed for your account.
The minimum recharge amount depends on the plans each operator offers. Neither source establishes a recharge fee, convenience charge, discount, or price advantage over operator apps or other payment apps. Do not assume one exists; compare the total on the bill screen before you confirm.
How this differs from WhatsApp bill payments
Meta’s September 2026 announcement describes a broader bill-payments feature in India and notes that WhatsApp users already recharge phones. That is a separate rollout. The prepaid recharge workflow above is the Mobile Prepaid Recharge path reached through the ₹ icon. Do not treat a bill-payment screen as proof that prepaid recharge is available on your account, or the reverse.

Before you pay
- Confirm the mobile number, including whose number it is.
- Confirm the operator and circle.
- Confirm the plan name, validity, and amount on the bill screen.
The Help Center states that a recharge successfully delivered to an active number cannot be cancelled or reversed. Check these three details before you enter your UPI PIN.

- Wait. The Help Center says a debit for a failed transaction is usually returned within 3–5 business days.
- If the amount has not returned after five business days, open your transaction history in WhatsApp and check the entry.
- Contact PayU, the recharge partner named in the Help Center, using the route shown in the Help Center. The Help Center directs payment questions to [email protected].
The Help Center says support cases are typically resolved within 24 hours. That is an expectation it states, not a guarantee. The support address and timeframe can change, so confirm the current route in the WhatsApp Help Center before you rely on them.
The feature is documented by Meta and WhatsApp, with launch details in Meta’s April 29, 2026 announcement and step-by-step instructions in the WhatsApp Help Center. Check the Help Center for the most current operator list, payment options, and support route.
