A changed layout may be a staged WhatsApp interface rollout rather than a fault. Android users can then force-stop WhatsApp and clear its cache; iPhone users should close and reopen the app. Do not clear Android storage or delete WhatsApp on iPhone until your chats are protected, because those actions can remove local app data.
There is no documented WhatsApp setting that lets you drag, hide or restore the navigation tabs manually. If the layout remains different after the safe fixes, document your versions and report it through WhatsApp’s in-app Help route.

What the WhatsApp tabs are supposed to look like
WhatsApp’s Help Center describes the Android navigation bar as four tabs at the bottom of the screen: Chats, Updates, Communities and Calls. Chats is the first screen shown when WhatsApp opens. That description is a reference layout, not a promise that every account will display the same arrangement at the same time.

Meta’s newsroom announcement dated March 26, 2026, said WhatsApp was rolling out new features and that a profile picture would be visible “in the bottom tab.” This is evidence that navigation elements can change through a staged product rollout. A tab moving position, a new icon appearing, or a control being temporarily absent can therefore be an account- or release-level difference rather than damage to your phone.

The safest interpretation is:
- One phone changed after an update: the new interface may have reached that account first.
- The same account looks different on another phone: the two devices may have different app versions, operating-system versions or rollout assignments.
- A tab vanished after a crash or failed update: local app state may be damaged, so platform troubleshooting is reasonable.
- Several people report the same change at once: a server-side or staged redesign is more likely than an individual phone problem.
Use another current device only as a diagnostic comparison. Do not treat its tab order as the “correct” order or assume that copying its layout is possible.
Do these low-risk checks first
- Look for the tab in the whole interface. Swipe through the bottom navigation, open each visible tab and check whether a control has moved into a menu or a differently named area. A tab that moved is not the same problem as a tab that is unavailable to the account.
- Update WhatsApp. On Android, open Google Play, search for WhatsApp and install an available update. On iPhone, open the App Store, select your account icon and install the WhatsApp update if listed.
- Install pending phone updates. Use your phone’s normal Android or iOS software-update screen. An app and its operating system can expose different layouts when one is substantially older than the other.
- Restart the phone. A full restart reloads the app and system processes without deleting chats or settings.
- Open WhatsApp again and check every tab. Record whether the issue is a missing tab, a reordered tab, an empty screen or an app that closes before the navigation bar appears. These symptoms point to different causes.
WhatsApp’s own Help Center gives the same general first-line advice for a missing control: check that you are using the latest version, restart the device and try again. If the layout changed but the app otherwise works, allow for the possibility that no local repair will restore the previous arrangement.
Android: force-stop and clear the cache
Android exposes two useful local repairs that are not part of the standard iPhone troubleshooting path. Perform them in order, stopping as soon as the tabs return or the behavior is clearly a rollout difference.
1. Force-stop WhatsApp
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, App management or the equivalent menu on your phone.
- Select WhatsApp.
- Tap Force stop and confirm.
- Launch WhatsApp from the home screen or app drawer.
Force-stopping ends the current process. It does not remove your account, chats or media. It can correct a navigation bar that failed to redraw after an update or after the app resumed from the background.

2. Clear the temporary cache
- Return to Settings > Apps > WhatsApp.
- Open Storage, Storage & cache or a similarly named screen.
- Tap Clear cache.
- Reopen WhatsApp and check the tabs.
Cached data is temporary. Removing it may repair a corrupted local UI state, but it cannot force WhatsApp to withdraw a server-controlled rollout. The first launch after a cache clear can take slightly longer while temporary files are rebuilt.
3. Do not confuse “Clear cache” with “Clear storage”
Google Android Help states that Clear storage permanently deletes all app data. Depending on the phone and WhatsApp’s current state, that can remove sign-in information, local settings and chat data that has not been safely backed up. The labels may appear next to each other, so read the confirmation dialog carefully.
Only consider clearing storage after you have verified a current WhatsApp chat backup, know the phone number and account credentials needed to sign in again, and can receive the account verification code. If you cannot verify those points, stop after the cache clear and use WhatsApp’s support route instead.
4. Reinstall only as a final Android measure
Reinstallation is more disruptive than a restart or cache clear. Before removing the app, open WhatsApp’s backup settings and confirm the latest successful backup date, check that the backup account is available on the phone, and make sure you can complete number verification. Reinstalling may repair damaged application files, but it will not necessarily change a staged navigation design.

iPhone: close, update and redownload in order
Apple’s official troubleshooting sequence emphasizes closing and reopening the app, restarting the device, checking updates and, if the problem persists, deleting and redownloading the app. iOS does not provide an Android-style “clear cache” button for an individual app.
1. Close and reopen WhatsApp
- Open the app switcher. On an iPhone with Face ID, swipe up from the bottom edge and pause; on a model with a Home button, double-click the Home button.
- Find the WhatsApp card.
- Swipe the card up to close it.
- Open WhatsApp again and inspect the bottom navigation.
This clears a hung foreground process without deleting application data. If the tabs appear normally after reopening, no further action is needed.
2. Restart the iPhone and install updates
Restart the iPhone using its hardware controls, then install any WhatsApp update shown in the App Store. Also install a pending iOS update from the phone’s Software Update screen. Open WhatsApp after both updates finish and check whether the layout is still different.
3. Delete and redownload only after protecting chats
Apple warns that deleting an app may lose data stored in that app. Confirm WhatsApp chat protection and account access before choosing the delete option. You should know the phone number registered with WhatsApp, have access to its verification method and have a recent chat backup that can be restored. Then delete WhatsApp, redownload it from the App Store, verify the number and follow the restore prompts.

If the same tabs and order return after redownloading, the earlier problem was probably local app state. If the changed arrangement remains, that points more strongly to WhatsApp’s current interface assignment for the account.
How to distinguish a rollout from a broken local interface

Can you manually reorder or hide the WhatsApp tabs?
The official pages reviewed for this issue do not document a control for dragging, hiding, pinning or restoring WhatsApp’s navigation tabs. WhatsApp may change the order or contents of the bar as part of a release, experiment or account rollout, but the ordinary settings screens do not offer a user-facing reorder command.
That means common customization attempts are unlikely to solve the problem:

- Changing the phone’s home-screen arrangement does not change WhatsApp’s internal tabs.
- Changing notification settings affects alerts, not the navigation bar.
- Clearing cache can repair local display state, but it cannot override a remote layout assignment.
- Installing an unofficial older package creates security and account risks and is not an approved way to recover a previous design.
If a tab is present but in an unfamiliar position, use the current layout rather than repeatedly deleting data. If a feature that you need is genuinely absent, report the exact symptom instead of requesting a specific tab order that WhatsApp may no longer support.
What information to collect before contacting WhatsApp
Support can distinguish a rollout from a broken installation more quickly when the report includes reproducible details. Capture the navigation bar and note:
- The WhatsApp version shown in WhatsApp’s app information screen.
- Your phone model and whether it is Android or iPhone.
- The Android or iOS version.
- The date and approximate time the layout changed.
- Whether the change happened immediately after an app or operating-system update.
- Which tabs are visible, which are missing and their exact order.
- Whether chats, status-style updates, communities and calls still open through other entry points.
- Whether force-stop, cache clearing, close/reopen or reinstalling changed anything.
Take a screenshot that does not expose private message content. Use WhatsApp’s in-app Help or Contact us route and describe the behavior factually. Say that the layout may be a rollout or platform variation rather than asserting that WhatsApp has corrupted your account; the distinction helps support triage the report.
Fixes to avoid unless you understand the data risk
Clearing Android storage without a verified backup
This is the highest-risk local step because Android treats it as permanent deletion of app data. A backup that is old, incomplete or tied to an account you can no longer access may not restore everything. Verify the backup date and account before proceeding.

Apple’s warning about app data applies even when the visible symptom is only a navigation change. Deletion can also add a verification step and a restore wait. Use close/reopen, restart and updates first.
Assuming another phone has the universal layout
Two current devices can legitimately show different navigation while Meta rolls out a change. A comparison is useful evidence, not a command to downgrade or erase the device that looks different.
Using unofficial modified clients
Modified packages are not a supported UI fix. They can expose chats and credentials, break account access or leave you without reliable backups. Keep troubleshooting within the official app and platform settings.
A practical decision path
- Only the order changed and WhatsApp works: update, restart and treat it as a possible rollout. There is no documented reorder control.
- A tab is missing and the app otherwise responds: check for a moved control, update both app and phone, restart, then compare another current device only for diagnosis.
- The bar is blank or the app is unstable on Android: force-stop, clear cache and reopen. Avoid Clear storage until chat protection is confirmed.
- The bar is blank or the app is unstable on iPhone: close and reopen, restart and update. Delete and redownload only after confirming backup and account access.
- The layout survives all safe steps: record versions, model, operating system and a screenshot, then contact WhatsApp through in-app Help.
The key distinction is between repairing a local app state and waiting for a product rollout. Restarts, force-stop, cache clearing and reinstalling can fix files or processes on the phone; none of them gives the user control over a navigation design delivered by WhatsApp’s servers.
