If WhatsApp Live Location is not moving, first check the sender’s share timer. Live Location ends when its selected duration expires or the sender stops sharing; the recipient can still see a static thumbnail and the last position. Start a new share from the chat if the timer has ended.
If the share is active, check location permission, background access, Battery Saver or battery optimization, system-wide Location, and the phone’s data and GPS conditions. The correct fix depends on whether there is no location at all, the map is stale, or updates resume only when WhatsApp is open.

Use the symptom to choose the shortest diagnostic path. The phone sending the location is usually the one that needs to be fixed; changing settings on the recipient’s phone cannot restore a sender’s location feed.

1. Confirm that Live Location is still active
Live Location is time-limited. WhatsApp lets the sender choose a duration, and the stream stops automatically when that period ends. The sender can also stop it manually before the timer expires.

- Ask the sender to open the WhatsApp chat where the location was shared.
- Look at the Live Location card rather than the map thumbnail alone. Check whether it shows an active timer or an ended share.
- If the duration has ended, have the sender start a fresh Live Location share from that chat and choose a new duration.
- If the sender stopped sharing, repeat the share instead of trying to refresh the recipient’s map.
After a share ends, WhatsApp can retain a static thumbnail and expose the last updated location. That display is expected behavior, not proof that the recipient’s app is malfunctioning. A new share is required for new positions.
2. Fix Location access on an iPhone
iPhone Location Services must be enabled at the system level before WhatsApp can obtain a position. Apple states that when Location Services are off, apps cannot use location from Location Services in either the foreground or the background.
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.
- Turn on Location Services if it is off.
- In the app list, open WhatsApp and grant the access level required for Live Location. WhatsApp’s iPhone guidance identifies Always when it is available for continuous background updating.
- Return to WhatsApp, open the original chat, and send a new Live Location share. Do not force-close WhatsApp while testing.
The exact permission choices shown can depend on the iOS release. If an access level is unavailable, select the most permissive option offered for WhatsApp and verify whether the stream continues after the screen locks or you switch to another app.

Apple distinguishes location access while an app is in use from permission to use location in the background. If the position changes while WhatsApp is open but freezes after you leave it, review WhatsApp’s Location setting again and choose the background-capable option shown by iOS. Then create a new share; changing a permission does not retroactively repair an expired card.
What to record if the iPhone still fails
There is no single iOS-version defect identified for every iPhone. Record the iOS version, WhatsApp version, iPhone model, network type, signal conditions, permission shown for WhatsApp, and whether updates resume as soon as WhatsApp returns to the foreground. Those details separate a permission or handset policy problem from an account-specific or service problem.
3. Fix Location access on Android
Android exposes WhatsApp’s location permission through the app settings. Labels vary by Android release and handset, but the usual route is:
- Open Settings > Apps > WhatsApp > Permissions > Location.
- Grant an allowed location permission. Depending on the release, choices can include Allow only while using the app, Ask every time, and Don’t allow. Select the option that permits the access required for Live Location, rather than Don’t allow.
- Enable the phone’s system-wide Location control in Quick Settings or Settings.
- Return to WhatsApp and send a new Live Location share.
WhatsApp warns that disabling permissions can remove functionality. If the permission menu uses different wording, choose the allowed setting that supports background operation and test it with a fresh share.

Android 10 and later background permission
Android 10 (API level 29) and later treat background location as a separate permission requirement for apps that access location when they are not visible. A handset may therefore show an allowed foreground permission while still restricting background updates. Check the WhatsApp permission page for a background-capable choice and follow any additional Android prompt before testing again.
4. Remove background restrictions when updates stop outside WhatsApp
A stream that moves only while WhatsApp is open is evidence of a background restriction, an insufficient permission level, or a handset power policy. It is not, by itself, proof of a universal WhatsApp defect.
Checks on Android
- Review Battery Saver and turn it off for the test. Android documents that Battery Saver changes how location behaves.
- Open the WhatsApp battery settings and inspect battery optimization or unrestricted-background options. Menu names differ among manufacturers.
- Verify that background data is allowed for WhatsApp, especially if the phone is on mobile data.
- Look for a manufacturer-specific auto-start, sleeping-app, background-limit, or app-freezing control and allow WhatsApp to run in the background.
- Repeat the test with the phone connected to a reliable network and Location enabled.
Checks on iPhone
- Confirm that WhatsApp has the background-capable Location permission described in the iPhone section.
- Do not swipe WhatsApp away from the app switcher during the test.
- Send a new share after changing the permission, then switch to another app or lock the screen and observe whether the recipient receives new positions.
Because manufacturers expose different controls, there is no universal Android button path for battery optimization or auto-start. Treat those settings as a checklist and use the labels on the affected handset.
5. If WhatsApp cannot find any location
“No location” is different from a stale Live Location card. Work through the phone and signal prerequisites in this order:
- Turn on system-wide Location.
- Confirm that WhatsApp has an allowed Location permission.
- Check that mobile data or Wi-Fi is working by loading another service. A phone with no usable connection may not be able to transmit a new position.
- Move to a place where the phone can obtain a usable GPS or other location signal, then wait briefly and retry the share.
- Start a new Live Location share after the prerequisites are restored.
WhatsApp says that Facebook Places and Google Maps provide map and place information used when resolving a location. If WhatsApp cannot find a place at all, the problem can be with those location providers or with the phone’s positioning and network conditions, rather than with the recipient’s chat.
6. Distinguish a sender problem from a recipient display problem
The sender’s phone creates and transmits the positions. The recipient’s phone displays the latest position it has received. Use that division of responsibility to avoid changing the wrong device.
- If every recipient sees the same old position, troubleshoot the sender’s timer, permissions, background rules, network, and Location signal.
- If one recipient is stale but another receives new positions, check that recipient’s connection and WhatsApp display first; the sender may be working normally.
- If the card is static for everyone and the timer has ended, the sender must create a new share.
- If updates appear whenever the sender opens WhatsApp, focus on background permission and power-management settings on the sender’s phone.
Ask the sender to open the chat, check the active share, and use WhatsApp’s Privacy > Live location area when reviewing or restarting sharing. The recipient cannot extend another person’s timer.

7. Run a clean test instead of guessing
A controlled test shows which change fixed the problem and prevents an old, expired card from confusing the diagnosis.
- On the sender’s phone, enable system Location and confirm WhatsApp’s allowed Location permission.
- Temporarily disable Battery Saver and review background-data, battery-optimization, and auto-start restrictions where applicable.
- Open the relevant chat and send a new Live Location share with a fresh duration.
- Leave WhatsApp running; do not force-close it. Switch apps or lock the screen to test background behavior.
- Have the recipient watch for a new position rather than relying on the old thumbnail. Confirm whether the card’s updated time changes.
- Repeat once on a reliable Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection. If the result changes with the network or with WhatsApp in the foreground, record that distinction.
Do not treat a single unchanged map image as a measured update interval. The official guidance does not establish a universal refresh rate, and update timing can vary with permission, power, signal, and network conditions.
8. Common misdiagnoses and unsafe assumptions
A stale thumbnail proves the recipient’s WhatsApp is broken
No. WhatsApp documents that the last updated location and a static thumbnail can remain after sharing ends. Check the sender’s timer and start a new share before troubleshooting the recipient’s app.
Foreground updates prove that GPS is working everywhere
They prove only that WhatsApp can obtain or transmit a position while visible under the current conditions. Background permission and power rules can still block updates after you leave the app.
Changing a recipient’s settings can revive an ended share
It cannot. The sender controls the duration and must share again after the timer expires or sharing is stopped.

A universal root cause cannot be assigned when permissions appear correct. Handset model, operating-system and WhatsApp versions, battery policy, network conditions, and reproducibility all matter. Compare behavior on a fresh share and document the conditions before claiming an outage or app bug.

- The operating-system version and WhatsApp version
- Whether the share timer was active, expired, or manually stopped
- The exact WhatsApp Location permission shown

10. Live Location privacy
WhatsApp states that Live Location is end-to-end encrypted, so only the people with whom it was shared can see it. Sharing is still time-limited: review the active card and stop it manually if you no longer want to transmit your position. A static thumbnail after the share ends does not mean new positions are still being sent.

This comparison prevents two common time-wasters: repeatedly refreshing an ended card and changing recipient settings when the sender’s phone is the one being restricted. iPhone versus Android: what the difference means
On iPhone, the key distinction is between Location Services being enabled and WhatsApp having the access level needed when it is not on screen. An app can appear to work while open yet stop when background access is not granted. Use the permission choices actually displayed by iOS; “Always” is the background-capable option identified in WhatsApp’s guidance when available.

When settings appear correct

Compare the result on Wi-Fi and mobile data, note whether foreground use revives updates, and test whether every recipient sees the same failure.
