WhatsApp support for KaiOS phones has ended. New users and people who had logged out lost support on June 25, 2024; people already logged in were given a temporary extension into early 2025. As of August 2026, a KaiOS phone is not a supported way to use WhatsApp. If WhatsApp is essential, choose a compatible Android phone or iPhone instead of buying another KaiOS handset.
When did WhatsApp stop working on KaiOS?
KaiOS’s termination notice set different dates for different users:
- June 25, 2024: support ended for people who had not previously activated WhatsApp on a KaiOS phone, and for people who had logged out.
- Early 2025: the temporary extension for users who were already logged in was due to end. KaiOS does not give a universal exact final time in its notice.
A KaiOS community technical account reported the final cutoff as January 10, 2025, at 8:00 a.m. UTC; treat that precise time as reported rather than as the date stated in KaiOS’s official notice. The key distinction is that the June 2024 cutoff did not immediately end access for every existing user. KaiOS’s sign-up guidance also describes the new-user and already-logged-in distinction.
HMD likewise said that preloaded WhatsApp on its KaiOS feature phones would operate only until early 2025 for users logged in before June 25, 2024. A preinstalled app or an old package listing is not evidence that the service still works; see HMD’s support guidance.

Does this mean the KaiOS phone itself has stopped working?
No. The change is the end of WhatsApp service on KaiOS, not necessarily a failure of the handset. Depending on the phone, network, and other services, cellular calls, SMS, Wi-Fi, alarms, radio, offline media, and other apps may continue to work. A phone can be perfectly functional for those uses while its WhatsApp app cannot connect.
Common signs include being unable to register WhatsApp, sign back in after logging out or resetting the phone, or send and receive messages from an old session. The app icon may remain on the phone or in the KaiStore even when the service is no longer available.
Does the phone model or KaiOS version make a difference?
This was a platform-support withdrawal, not a defect limited to one Nokia, Alcatel, TCL, JioPhone, or other manufacturer’s model. Earlier KaiOS documentation described WhatsApp compatibility on devices running KaiOS 2.5.1 or later, but that historical requirement does not restore service after the shutdown. The KaiOS Help Center archive is historical compatibility guidance, not confirmation of current support.
Do not assume a newer KaiOS release or a different KaiOS brand will solve the problem. For example, TCL identifies its FLIP Pro as a KaiOS 3.0 phone; a newer KaiOS device is still not a sound WhatsApp replacement. KaiOS’s device directory lists devices, not proof that WhatsApp is currently supported on them.

Can an update, reinstall, or reset bring WhatsApp back?
No supported fix can restore a service that WhatsApp has withdrawn from KaiOS. Updating firmware, reinstalling the app, clearing app data, changing SIM cards, or correcting the phone’s date and time cannot recreate server-side platform support. Such steps can sometimes help ordinary setup or connection problems while a service is supported; they do not reverse this shutdown.
A factory reset is particularly unhelpful if you are trying to preserve an old WhatsApp session. A reset removes local phone state and can require signing in again; under the former policy, users who needed to set up again after June 25, 2024 were unsupported. In 2026, resetting will not restore access.
- Do not log out or reset the phone in an attempt to keep or revive WhatsApp.
- Avoid unofficial clients, sideloading attempts, and “revival” tools. KaiOS apps are not interchangeable with Android APKs, and unofficial software can create account-security, credential, and compatibility risks.
- Changing your WhatsApp number does not change the operating system’s support status.
Can you use WhatsApp Web on a KaiOS phone?
Do not count on a KaiOS browser as a workaround. WhatsApp Web is a companion to a supported WhatsApp account and device ecosystem; it is not a replacement KaiOS client and does not reinstate KaiOS support. Move the account to a supported Android phone or iPhone rather than relying on a browser workaround.
What happens to calls, messages, and saved data?
WhatsApp messaging and WhatsApp calling are not officially available on KaiOS now. That is separate from ordinary mobile-network calls and SMS, which may continue to work on the handset. WhatsApp is an internet service, so having cellular data or Wi-Fi alone is not enough when the client platform is unsupported.

The service ending does not automatically erase every photo, video, or contact stored locally on the phone. Keep these separate:
- Local files and contacts: may remain on the handset and can be copied or recorded independently.
- WhatsApp account access: is no longer supported on KaiOS.
- Chat migration: should not be assumed to work automatically from KaiOS to Android or iPhone. Check WhatsApp’s current first-party transfer instructions for your new device before switching; a KaiOS-to-Android/iPhone chat-transfer path is not established here.
What to do before switching phones
- Save photos and videos. Copy files you want to keep to a computer or a cloud service before wiping or disposing of the phone.
- Preserve contacts. Export them if the handset offers that option, or make sure essential numbers are saved elsewhere.
- Keep important information you cannot replace. Record essential details from conversations rather than assuming chat history will transfer.
- Verify the replacement. Check the exact model’s current WhatsApp compatibility, operating system, app-store access, and network support before purchase.
- Do not erase the old phone yet. Wait until you have secured the files and contacts you need.
What kind of phone should you choose instead?
Start with the operating system, not the brand or the words “smart feature phone” on a listing. For WhatsApp, look for a currently supported Android or iOS device and check the exact model against WhatsApp’s current supported-device information. A phone that can run the app today but receives no security or operating-system updates may become a poor choice sooner.

Check US carrier compatibility before buying
For a US purchase, verify that the exact variant supports the carrier’s 4G LTE bands and VoLTE, is eligible for activation, and is unlocked if you intend to use it on a different network. An Android phone’s technical ability to run WhatsApp does not guarantee that it will work on your carrier. Carrier listings, such as T-Mobile’s TCL FLIP Go page, can help identify a carrier’s specific model, but confirm current availability and terms directly.

- “It is still preinstalled, so it must work.” Preinstallation reflects what shipped with a handset, not whether WhatsApp’s servers still support KaiOS.
- “It worked for someone recently.” Older reports may describe the temporary grace period before early 2025, a cached screen, or a phone running a different operating system.
- “A different KaiOS model will work.” The issue is platform support, not simply an old or faulty individual phone.
