A guest opens the link in a computer browser, types a name, waits for the host to admit them, and then can participate in the audio or video call without a WhatsApp account. The host can see the guest’s entered name in the waiting room, approve or deny entry, and remove the guest later.
The main risks are link distribution and what an admitted participant can observe at the call endpoint. Anyone who obtains the link can attempt to join, although guest admission requires host approval. Calls are end-to-end encrypted, but that does not prevent an admitted participant from seeing, hearing, or recording what is shared. An optional IP-relay setting can hide your IP address from another participant, with a possible reduction in call quality.

What WhatsApp guest calling is
Meta announced guest calling on October 14, 2026. It allows people who do not have WhatsApp accounts to join a WhatsApp voice or video call through a link. The guest opens the link in a computer browser, enters a name, and waits in a waiting room. Once the host admits the person, the guest can join a one-to-one or group call of up to 32 people.

Guest access changes the account requirement, not the host’s control over admission. Meta states that “Anyone joining as a guest always needs the call host’s approval.” A link therefore works as an invitation to request entry, not as an automatic pass into the conversation.

Can guests see your phone number?
No. Joining as a guest does not give the guest a participant list containing phone numbers. Meta specifically says guests cannot see other participants’ phone numbers, send messages to those participants, or add anyone else directly to the call.
This is different from ordinary contact discovery: a guest is present in the call session, not added to your WhatsApp address book or given a WhatsApp chat with you. The guest can see and hear what the call presents after admission, but the call interface does not turn the session into a directory of everyone’s numbers.
The name a guest types before joining is also not identity verification. A person can enter a nickname or someone else’s name, so hosts should treat the displayed name as a claim that needs to be checked against the invitation.

Waiting-room visibility
The person who creates the call link can see people waiting to enter. The host can inspect the names shown for waiting guests and decide who is admitted. Because names are entered by the guests themselves, the waiting room helps with screening but does not prove that a person is who they claim to be.
Admission decisions
The host is the gatekeeper for guest access. An unexpected person can hold a valid link and still remain outside the conversation until the host approves the request. If several people arrive, admit only the names you recognize or verify through a separate trusted channel.

Removal after admission
Approval is not permanent. The host can remove an admitted guest during the call. Use that control if the wrong person enters, a guest’s identity is unclear, or someone stops following the meeting’s rules.
What a guest can see after admission
Once admitted, a guest can participate in the live call and use supported in-call features such as screen sharing, reactions, and hand raising. Those features reveal whatever the participant deliberately presents through the call, including their camera view, microphone audio, shared screen, or reactions.
Guest access does not include a separate WhatsApp messaging channel to the other participants. Guests cannot send messages to participants through WhatsApp from the call, and they cannot add another person directly. If another person needs to join, the host must handle that invitation and admission.
The practical meaning of “no phone-number visibility”
Phone-number privacy does not mean complete anonymity. An admitted participant can still learn information that appears in your camera frame, on your shared screen, in your voice, or in what you say. Remove open documents, notifications, contact lists, and other identifying information from a shared screen before presenting it.
How call links can be abused
Forwarding is the central risk
WhatsApp says every call-link URL is different and secure, but also warns: “Anyone with your call link can join your call, so only share it with people you trust.” A recipient can forward the link, post it in a group, or leave it in a message that another person can access. The link itself does not tell WhatsApp who the intended invitee was.

Approval limits the damage
Because guest entry requires host approval, a forwarded link does not by itself put an unknown person into the call. It does create an extra request for the host to evaluate. Keep the waiting room visible while a sensitive call is starting, and do not approve a name merely because it appears familiar.

Expiration and revocation
A call link can be revoked. WhatsApp’s Help Center also states that a link expires if it remains unused for 30 days. Expiration is not a substitute for revocation when a link may already have been copied: revoke it as soon as you believe it has reached the wrong person, then distribute a new link through a controlled channel.
Encryption, recording, and what it does not solve
WhatsApp says voice and video calls are end-to-end encrypted and have no time limits. End-to-end encryption protects the call’s content while it travels between participants and WhatsApp’s calling infrastructure; it is not a promise that participants cannot observe the content at their own devices.
An admitted participant can use a screen recorder, a second phone, a camera, or another capture method. The official feature description does not promise that calls cannot be recorded. Treat anything said or shown on the call as available to every admitted participant.
Can a WhatsApp caller see your IP address?
Protect IP address in calls
WhatsApp provides an optional Protect IP address in calls setting. When enabled, calls are relayed through WhatsApp servers so the other participant cannot see your IP address. Meta Engineering describes the control as helping hide a participant’s location from other parties.

Relaying can reduce call quality because the media takes an additional path. If hiding your IP address matters more than the lowest possible latency, enable the setting and check whether audio and video remain acceptable on your connection.
Group-call behavior
WhatsApp says group calls are relayed through its servers by default. That default is separate from the optional setting for calls that are not already using group-call relay. In either case, relay protection concerns network-address exposure; it does not hide what an admitted participant can see or hear in the conversation.

- Decide whether guests are appropriate. Guest links remove the account requirement, so use them only when the participants and information fit that model.
- Create the call link and share it privately. Use a trusted channel and assume that any recipient could forward the URL.
- Keep the approval gate active. If the interface offers Require approval to join, leave it enabled, especially when a link may circulate beyond the original invitees. Guest admission itself requires the host’s approval.
- Watch the waiting room. Compare each entered name with the expected attendee list. Verify an unclear person outside the call before admitting them.
- Admit selectively. Approve only the people you intend to have access. An unknown request is a reason to deny or verify, not to guess.
- Remove unexpected participants. If someone enters under the wrong name or behaves improperly, use the host’s removal control immediately.
- Revoke a compromised link. If the URL was posted publicly, sent to the wrong group, or no longer needs to work, revoke it and issue a fresh invitation.
- Review what will be visible. Close unrelated windows, hide notifications, and remove sensitive material from any screen you may share.
- Consider IP protection. Enable Protect IP address in calls when concealing your IP address from another participant is important, then test the resulting call quality.
Guest checklist before joining
- Open the invitation only if you trust the sender and the context.
- Enter a name the host will recognize, but remember that the name is self-entered and not proof of identity.
- Expect to wait for approval; a valid link does not guarantee entry.
- Check your camera background, microphone environment, and shared-screen content before admission.
- Do not assume that end-to-end encryption prevents another participant from recording with a device or screen-capture tool.
- If you need another person to attend, ask the host to invite them rather than trying to add them yourself.
Common situations and the safest response
An unknown name appears in the waiting room
Do not admit the request solely because the person has the link. Deny it or verify the person through a separate channel. Since links can be forwarded, possession of the URL is not evidence that the requester was invited.
The wrong person was admitted
Remove the participant, then revoke the existing link if you think it was shared incorrectly. Create and distribute a new link only to the intended group.

The call becomes unstable after IP protection is enabled
Relay can reduce call quality. If the conversation is not sensitive to IP exposure, compare the call with the setting disabled; if privacy is the priority, keep relay enabled and improve the local network connection rather than treating a quality change as an encryption failure.
A participant asks for a phone number or direct message
Guest calling does not provide guests with other participants’ numbers, WhatsApp messaging, or direct-add controls. Exchange contact details only through a separate method that everyone has agreed to use.
You need a permanent record of the call
Do not infer recording availability from encryption or guest access. The documented feature set covers live calling, screen sharing, reactions, and hand raising, while a participant may still capture the session independently. Obtain consent and use an appropriate recording process under your organization’s rules.
What this means for sensitive conversations
Guest calling is strongest when the host actively manages admission and the link is distributed narrowly. It is weaker when the URL is posted in a public channel, when names are accepted without verification, or when participants share confidential material on camera or screen.
For a high-sensitivity call, use a fresh link, keep the waiting room under observation, verify unexpected names outside the call, remove anyone who should not be present, and revoke the link afterward. Enable IP relay when network-address privacy is part of the threat model, while recognizing that relay may affect quality.
