WhatsApp announced optional parental controls for teen accounts on September 30, 2026. Parents and teens can set selected privacy options together, require parent approval before certain settings are relaxed, receive alerts about group activity, and manage access to Channels, Status and Meta AI. The feature is rolling out gradually, so it may not appear for every account or region yet.
What the new teen controls do
The controls are designed as a shared setup between a parent and teen rather than as a way to read the teen’s conversations. WhatsApp says parents can guide several account settings while personal messages and calls remain private and protected by end-to-end encryption.

Privacy settings with parent approval
Parents and teens can choose who may see the teen’s profile photo and who may add the teen to groups. If the teen later wants to loosen those choices, WhatsApp requires approval through a parent-set PIN.

Group activity alerts
Parents can opt to receive notifications when the teen joins or leaves a group, or when a group grows meaningfully. WhatsApp’s announcement does not say that these alerts reveal message contents.

Channels, Status and Meta AI
Controls also cover whether the teen can use Channels, which Status updates the teen sees, who can view the teen’s Status, and which Meta AI experience is available. Parents can select Meta AI’s default 13+ setting or the stricter “Limited Content” option. WhatsApp does not publish a full list of what Limited Content blocks or changes, so the label should not be treated as a detailed content specification.
What stays private
WhatsApp describes the controls as a way to support family guidance without monitoring private conversations. Its announcement states: “Even with controls turned on, your teen’s personal messages and calls stay private and protected by end-to-end encryption.” That is WhatsApp’s description of its privacy design, not an independent security audit.

How families set up the controls
WhatsApp’s official setup outline starts on the teen’s phone and requires linking a parent or guardian account. The visible process is:
- Open WhatsApp on the teen’s phone and start the parental-controls setup.
- Confirm the teen’s birthdate when prompted.
- Link the parent’s WhatsApp account.
- Set the available privacy, group-alert, Channels, Status and Meta AI choices together.
- Create the parent-set PIN that is required if the teen attempts to relax certain privacy settings.
The exact screens can vary as WhatsApp rolls the feature out. Check the teen account’s in-app settings for the current options instead of assuming every control is already available.

Availability and opting out
The controls are optional and can be adjusted or switched off, according to WhatsApp. The rollout is gradual and regional, so an account may not show the feature even after the announcement. Families should rely on the settings currently visible in their own WhatsApp accounts.

Do not confuse teen controls with pre-teen managed accounts
WhatsApp has a separate “parent-managed accounts” feature for pre-teens. That product includes parent review of message requests from unknown contacts, choices about who can contact the child and which groups they can join, a parent PIN and activity updates. It is also rolling out gradually. Those managed accounts are not the same feature as the controls announced for teen accounts.

What WhatsApp has not established
- No independent study in the announcement measures whether the controls improve safety or wellbeing.
- No adoption, prevalence or regional rollout statistics are provided.
- WhatsApp does not publish the complete rules behind the “Limited Content” Meta AI option in the announcement.
- The announcement does not indicate that group alerts include message text.
Bottom line for families
WhatsApp’s teen controls add shared privacy decisions, PIN-protected changes, group-activity alerts and switches for Channels, Status and Meta AI. They are optional, preserve the privacy design WhatsApp describes for personal messages and calls, and may arrive at different times depending on region. Review the teen account’s current settings with your child rather than relying on the announcement alone.
