Chat Lock hides the conversation behind authentication on your device and conceals identifying details in notifications; it does not hide or delete the other participant’s copy. WhatsApp also uses “Restricted chat” for a different privacy setting, not for the locked-chat folder.
Can someone see if I locked our WhatsApp chat?
No notification is sent to the other participants when you lock a chat, according to WhatsApp Help Center. The chat is moved behind an additional authentication step on your device. This changes how the conversation appears to you; it does not remove messages from anyone else’s account or prevent them from messaging you.

That no-notification statement is the specific behavior WhatsApp documents. It does not guarantee that another person could never infer you locked a chat from circumstances outside WhatsApp’s notification.
Do locked chats show the name or message in notifications?
WhatsApp says notifications for locked chats hide the contact’s name and message content. Instead, a notification may show “WhatsApp” or “WhatsApp: 1 new message.” This conceals the preview on your device, rather than changing what the sender sees in their own chat.

Does locking a WhatsApp chat stop calls?
No. Calls from contacts whose chats you have locked are not blocked. Chat Lock protects access to the conversation and its notification details, not incoming calls. If you want to stop direct messages, calls, and status updates from a person, WhatsApp identifies blocking as the relevant control.
Is restricting a chat the same as blocking or archiving?
No. These controls have different purposes. Chat Lock adds an authentication gate; Archive moves a chat out of the main list; and blocking limits contact from an account. WhatsApp’s separate “Restricted chat” label refers to restrictions on unofficial clients or AI agents.

| Control | What it does | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Chat Lock | Hides a selected chat behind device authentication or a secret code, and conceals chat details in notifications. | Does not notify participants or block their calls. |
| Restricted chat | According to WhatsApp’s privacy guidance, limits use of unofficial clients or AI agents in individual and group chats. | Is not the hidden, authenticated folder described by Chat Lock. |
| Archive | Moves a chat out of the main chat list while keeping it in Archived. It is not deleted, and it generally stays archived when new messages arrive; notifications are suppressed except for mentions or replies. | Does not add Chat Lock authentication or delete the conversation. |
| Block | Stops direct messages, calls, and status updates from the blocked account, and hides specified profile and presence details from that person. | Does not remove the existing chat or hide messages exchanged in a group both people share. |
WhatsApp describes these behaviors in its guidance on privacy settings, archiving, and blocking. The exact controls and labels can vary by platform and language; the descriptions here do not imply that every platform exposes identical menus.

What is “Restricted chat” on WhatsApp?
“Restricted chat” is not another name for Chat Lock. WhatsApp’s privacy-settings guidance describes Restricted chat as a setting that limits the use of unofficial clients or AI agents in individual and group chats. It says the label appears as Restricted chat when Advanced chat privacy is turned off. That setting is distinct from hiding a conversation in a locked folder.

How do you open or hide locked chats?
WhatsApp’s Help Center describes creating a secret code and managing hide or unhide settings on Android and iPhone. Its Web instructions say a secret code is required to open locked chats, and its guidance also includes Windows and Mac tabs. The precise steps and labels may differ across platforms and languages, so follow the instructions shown in WhatsApp for your device.
Locked chats close when the device is locked. Restoring a backup on a new phone does not itself unlock them; you need to set up device authentication to access the chats. Calls from a locked-chat contact can still come through.

What happens if you forget the secret code?
If the locked-chat folder is hidden and you forget its secret code, WhatsApp describes an “unlock and clear” recovery option. Use it only if you accept losing the local conversation contents: it clears the code, returns the locked chats to the chat list, and clears messages and media in those chats.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhatsApp says restoration is possible only from a backup made before clearing, and that the backup can restore only content sent before it was made. A later backup cannot bring back content that was already cleared.

Does Chat Lock change who can see your profile or online status?
No. Chat Lock concerns access to a selected conversation on your device. Profile photo, About, last seen, online status, and Status visibility are controlled separately through account privacy settings. WhatsApp lets you configure audiences for profile and presence information, but says you cannot hide your phone number while using WhatsApp. See its privacy settings guidance.
Blocking also has specific visibility effects: WhatsApp says a blocked person cannot see your last seen, online status, status updates, or profile-photo changes. Blocking does not conceal messages you exchange in a group that both of you share.
