If WhatsApp Chat Lock seems broken, first check whether the Locked Chats folder is hidden: search for your secret code in WhatsApp. If you still cannot open chats, troubleshoot on your primary Android phone or iPhone and check device authentication. Do not use “unlock and clear” until you understand that it deletes messages and media in locked chats.
Find the Locked Chats folder first
A missing folder may be hidden by design, rather than missing or broken. In WhatsApp, tap the search bar and enter your secret code. WhatsApp says hidden locked chats can be discovered this way; its Secret Code announcement describes the folder as discoverable by typing the code in search (WhatsApp Help Center; WhatsApp Blog, November 30, 2023).

If the Locked Chats folder is visible, open it and authenticate when prompted. WhatsApp says locked chats close when the device is locked, so being asked to authenticate again is expected.
Use your primary phone to manage Chat Lock
If you are trying to access locked chats on WhatsApp Web or another linked device, return to the primary Android phone or iPhone first. WhatsApp’s Help Center says the secret code needed to open locked chats on Web must be created on the phone, and hide or unhide settings must also be changed there. Current Help Center guidance covers Android, iOS, Web, Windows, and Mac, but the Web setup steps still point to the phone.

Menu labels and steps can vary by app version and language. Follow the labels in your current WhatsApp build rather than relying on older launch instructions. Meta’s May 2023 announcement described the original lock flow and said companion-device locking would be added over subsequent months; that historical description is not a guaranteed current menu path (Meta Newsroom).
Check authentication after moving to a new phone
If the issue began after restoring WhatsApp to a replacement phone, set up that phone’s device authentication and try again. WhatsApp says locked chats remain locked after backup and restore, and device authentication is required to access them. A restore does not, by itself, remove the lock. The Help Center’s instructions apply to Android and iPhone; they do not establish different recovery steps for individual operating-system versions (WhatsApp Help Center).

Forgot your secret code? Read this before clearing chats
WhatsApp documents “unlock and clear locked chats” as a recovery option if you have forgotten the code. It is destructive: WhatsApp says, “If you unlock and clear locked chats, your secret code will be cleared and all of your locked chats will be returned to your chat list.” It also warns, “However, this will also clear all messages, photos, and videos in locked chats.” The action must be handled from an Android phone or iPhone (WhatsApp Help Center).

Only consider clearing if you accept losing that content. Recovery is possible only from a backup made before the clearing, and only for messages and media included in that backup. Do not assume that a newer backup will contain the deleted locked-chat content.

Know what Chat Lock does—and does not—hide
- People in a conversation are not notified when you lock it.
- Notifications from locked chats hide message content and contact information. WhatsApp says a notification may show “WhatsApp” or “WhatsApp: 1 new message.”
- Calls from contacts in locked chats are not blocked.
These behaviors are intentional and do not, by themselves, mean Chat Lock is malfunctioning (WhatsApp Help Center).

After checking the hidden-folder search, using the primary phone for settings, and confirming device authentication, a persistent, reproducible failure may point to an app or device issue. The official guidance cited here does not identify a universal repair or confirm a current, widespread defect. Note your WhatsApp version and phone operating system when describing the problem to support; avoid treating unofficial workarounds as confirmed fixes.
