The company described him as Head of WhatsApp India, not as WhatsApp’s CEO. “CEO” referred to his then-current role as co-founder and chief executive of payments company Ezetap. Bose was expected to join WhatsApp in early 2019 and build its first full country team outside California. Business Standard and Hindustan Times reported the appointment and title.
What role did WhatsApp give Abhijit Bose?
WhatsApp appointed Bose as its India head, with responsibility for the company’s operations in the country. He was to be based in Gurugram, Haryana, and report to WhatsApp Chief Operating Officer Matt Idema, according to contemporaneous reports. The appointment was announced in November 2018; his expected start was early 2019. Those dates describe different events, not conflicting accounts. Business Standard reported the planned start, while Scroll.in described the India-head appointment.
WhatsApp said the role would involve building its first full country team outside California. “Head of WhatsApp India” is the clearest description of the position; “India operations” describes its scope, rather than establishing a separate India CEO post.
Was Bose appointed CEO of WhatsApp in India?
No. WhatsApp’s reported title for Bose was Head of WhatsApp India. He was Ezetap’s co-founder and CEO before moving to WhatsApp. The headline wording can blur those separate roles, but the contemporaneous reports distinguish them. Business Standard and Hindustan Times identify him as the India head and separately note his previous Ezetap chief executive role.

Who is Abhijit Bose?
Bose co-founded Ezetap, an Indian electronic-payments company, and served as its CEO before joining WhatsApp. His experience in payments and business technology was relevant to WhatsApp’s interest in business messaging and digital commerce in India. Contemporary profiles also reported that he studied at Harvard Business School and Cornell University. The Economic Times and The Indian Express covered his background.
Why did WhatsApp create an India-head role?
India was WhatsApp’s largest market by users in reports from the time, and the company was expanding its local business while facing pressure to engage more directly with Indian authorities and stakeholders. The appointment offered a country-level leader to build local operations and relationships; the public reporting does not establish that Bose was hired solely to address any one regulatory issue.

The move came amid scrutiny of misinformation and viral rumors on WhatsApp, including content linked in reporting to mob violence. Indian authorities had pressed the company on local presence and grievance handling. These concerns formed part of the operating context, alongside WhatsApp’s stated business priorities. Reuters reporting carried by Business Standard and Business Standard covered that context.
What was Bose expected to work on?
The announced remit centered on building WhatsApp’s India organization and helping businesses connect with customers. Follow-up coverage also described work on business products, local partnerships and user safety. WhatsApp Payments and the broader digital economy were part of the surrounding opportunity, but public reporting did not define every internal responsibility of the role.

At the time, WhatsApp was developing two kinds of business tools: the WhatsApp Business app for smaller businesses and tools or an API for larger businesses communicating with customers at scale. The Economic Times reported that more than one million users of WhatsApp’s business products were in India at the time; that is a historical figure, not a current user count. The Economic Times covered the products and figure. In a later interview, Bose’s stated priorities included helping businesses and user safety. The Indian Express reported those priorities.
