To estimate what a particular copy is worth, first identify exactly which edition it is and what is included, then compare it with recent completed sales of the closest matching copies—not just current asking prices.
What a collector’s edition can include
Publishers build these editions around a particular game or franchise, so the contents vary. Bandai Namco Europe describes common items such as figures, artbooks, SteelBooks, soundtracks and title-specific extras, while noting that Deluxe editions often focus more on downloadable content or in-game items. Some editions combine physical collectibles and digital benefits. Bandai Namco Europe explains the differences and resale factors.

Possible contents include:
- The game in a platform-specific format, such as a console disc or a PC game key
- A statue, figure or other display piece
- A SteelBook or other special game case
- An artbook, strategy guide or companion book
- A soundtrack, map, cards, patch, pin, coin or other themed item
- Special packaging, certificates or small keepsakes
- Downloadable content, in-game items or other digital entitlements
These are possibilities, not a checklist that applies to every release. The publisher’s listing for the exact edition is the best reference for what should have been included.

Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced Collector’s Edition listing includes a Deluxe Edition copy, a 31 cm Edward Kenway figure, a leather logbook, metal brooch, SteelBook, cloth map and printed sea shanty sheet. It specifies a physical disc for console and a game key for PC, so even the game format differs by platform. See Ubisoft’s edition listing.

SQUARE ENIX’s 2024 Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Collector’s Edition listing pairs a Deluxe Edition with an approximately 48 cm Sephiroth statue and digital items. The listing says code redemption requires an internet connection and PlayStation Network sign-in, and gives a redemption deadline of December 31, 2030. An item described as “included” may therefore be a code with conditions, rather than a physical object. See the SQUARE ENIX listing.
Sony Interactive Entertainment’s 2010 Gran Turismo 5 collector’s edition included a Blu-ray game, a limited 1:43 die-cast car, a 300-page driving guide, five DLC cars, a key chain and a numbered certificate of authenticity. How to identify and inspect your edition
Before looking up a price, establish what the copy is and whether it is complete. Similar names such as Deluxe, Premium, Limited and Collector’s do not make editions interchangeable, and platform or regional versions can differ.
- Identify the exact version. Record the game title, edition name or tier, platform, region and release variant. Check the publisher’s listing, including any platform-specific contents or format.
- Make an item-by-item checklist. Compare the publisher’s inclusion list with the seller’s description and photographs. Mark each item present, missing, substituted, unopened or damaged. Keep physical items separate from codes and other digital benefits.
- Check digital entitlements independently. Establish whether a code is present and unused, whether it is compatible with the account’s region, whether it requires an account or internet connection, and whether it has an expiry date. Do not assume codes remain usable or transferable.
- Assess each component’s condition. Note the outer box, inserts, game case and disc or cartridge, SteelBook, figure and other items individually. A copy with the game and main figure may still be incomplete.
When buying, ask for clear photographs of the actual contents and any damage. When selling, disclose missing pieces, code status and component condition rather than describing the whole package with a single label such as “complete” or “like new.”

How to estimate resale value from completed sales
Use completed transactions for the closest available comparisons. Search for the exact edition and platform, then check whether the sold copies match your region, condition, completeness and digital or physical contents. An asking price shows what a seller hopes to receive; it does not establish what a buyer paid.
Find useful sold listings
eBay’s Product Research tool can show actual sold prices, including accepted Best Offer amounts, and supports filters and research periods of up to three years. Standard completed listings show items sold in the previous 90 days. These are tool coverage windows, not measures of how much an edition is worth. See eBay’s Product Research guidance.

Gather several recent close matches, then exclude listings that are bundled with other items, incomplete, for a different platform or region, or otherwise poor comparisons. Check the sale date and whether the item sold in a format or condition comparable to yours. If only a few close sales exist, say so; if there are no exact matches, explain which differences make the fallback comparisons less reliable.
Use price guides as a cross-check
PriceCharting says its video game prices are based on sold listings from eBay and its own marketplace, using recent sales, medians, averages, time weighting and outlier handling. It classifies listings into game-focused conditions such as loose, complete, new and graded, based on listing text. Those categories may not capture every component of a boxed collector’s edition, so treat a guide figure as a cross-check rather than a precise appraisal. Compare like with like and account for costs
For each possible comparison, check:
- Identity: exact edition, platform, region and release variant
- Completeness: box, inserts, collectibles and usable digital codes
- Condition: the state of each component, not only the game
- Evidence: sale date and number of close transactions
- Transaction details: shipping, marketplace fees and sale format
- Demand and scarcity: evidence about the print run and continuing interest in the title
Use the remaining close sales to form a practical range rather than relying on one outlier. For an estimate of what you might receive as a seller, account for shipping and marketplace fees; a guide price that excludes those costs is not the same as net proceeds. Bandai Namco Europe notes that resale outcomes can depend on the title, print run and community interest, while eBay’s sold-price tools help surface transactions that still require manual comparison.

No. The label “collector’s edition” does not guarantee scarcity, a resale premium or appreciation. Bandai Namco Europe notes that some editions sell out or rise above launch price, while many remain available at or below retail. Its conclusion is direct: “Buying a collector’s edition video game as a financial investment is a gamble.” Bandai Namco Europe’s article discusses why results vary.
There is no established category-wide average resale premium or appreciation rate for video game collector’s editions. Estimate a particular copy from the evidence for that exact edition, rather than assuming that a high asking price, a limited label or a large figure signals what it will sell for.
