SAE 60 is a high-viscosity engine-oil grade listed in the SAE J300 table reproduced in Petro-Canada Lubricants’ April 2021 handbook. But there is no universal list of engines that can use it: the engine manufacturer’s instructions determine the permitted viscosity, and the oil must also meet the required performance specification.
What does “thickest grade” mean?
SAE J300 classifies engine oils by viscosity. SAE International lists its current standard as J300_202405, revised May 9, 2024, and describes it as a viscosity classification in rheological terms. A grade describes viscosity behavior; it does not certify every other property an engine needs from its oil.

The SAE J300 table reproduced in Petro-Canada Lubricants’ Lubricants Handbook lists SAE 60 among the non-W grades. This supports calling SAE 60 a high-viscosity grade, but the current SAE listing does not expose the full grade table. On this evidence, it is safer to say SAE 60 is a very thick recognized grade than to claim it is definitively the thickest grade in the latest revision.

The W and non-W portions of the SAE classification refer to different test criteria. In a multigrade such as 20W-60, the number before W identifies the winter-temperature class, while 60 is the high-temperature grade. A high second number does not mean the oil is suitable for every engine, and the available sources do not establish the availability of a specific 20W-60 product.

Which engines can use SAE 60?
Only engines whose manufacturer specifies or explicitly permits SAE 60, and only when the oil also meets the required service or performance category. API explains in API 1509, 21st edition, Annex F, that SAE viscosity grades are a rheological classification intended to help engine manufacturers determine recommended grades. The American Petroleum Institute also says, “Vehicle owners should refer to their owner’s manuals before consulting these charts” on its API Oil Categories page.
The available documentation does not establish a general engine type, vehicle make, or model that can safely be said to use SAE 60. Do not assume it is right for an older, racing, worn, or hot-climate engine unless that engine’s authoritative documentation says so.

How to check whether an oil is allowed for your engine
- Find the viscosity guidance. Check the owner’s manual or authoritative engine documentation for its viscosity chart and the operating temperatures it covers.
- Confirm the required oil specification. Check the manual for the required service or performance category; matching the viscosity grade alone is not enough.
- Check the exact grade and product label. Use SAE 60 only if the documentation permits that grade, and verify that the oil meets the required specification.
- If the manual is unclear, ask the manufacturer or an authorized service provider. Do not substitute a thicker oil based only on a general rule about engine age, climate, or oil pressure.
What to compare when the manual permits more than one option
Compare only oils allowed by the engine documentation. Check the approved viscosity for expected operating temperatures, the required performance or service category, and whether the documentation permits the exact monograde or multigrade product. A viscosity number by itself cannot establish which option is right for a particular engine.
