A SIM card contains information that helps a phone connect to a mobile network. It may also hold contacts or SMS-related records, depending on the card, carrier, and device. To check for contacts, use your iPhone’s SIM import option or Google Contacts on Android; neither is a complete viewer of everything on a SIM.
What can be stored on a SIM card?
A SIM is part of the hardware that enables mobile-network access. The GSMA explains that a UICC contains SIM or USIM applications and data central to connectivity and security (GSMA). A SIM may also contain user records such as contacts or SMS-related data. Ofcom’s technical report describes these general categories and SIM file structures, but it dates to approximately 2012 and does not establish that every modern SIM contains every type of record (Ofcom).

A SIM is not a general backup of your phone. Its contents should not be confused with contacts saved to the device or an online account, or with message history held by a device or service. The listed sources do not support treating photos, apps, or all call history as SIM contents.

How to import SIM contacts on an iPhone
- Insert the previous, compatible SIM card into the iPhone.
- Open Settings > Apps > Contacts.
- Tap Import SIM Contacts. If prompted, choose where to import the contacts.
- When the import finishes, check the Contacts app.
Apple says iPhone does not store contacts on the SIM, and that the information available to import depends on how the previous phone stored it (Apple Support).

How to import SIM contacts on Android
In Google Contacts, the documented route imports selected contacts to a Google Account:
- Insert the SIM card and open the Contacts app.
- Tap Organize > Manage SIM.
- Select the contacts to import and choose the destination Google Account.
- Tap Import.
Google says imported contacts are added to the selected Google Account while remaining in the other account or source. Phones that use a manufacturer’s contacts app may have different menu labels or steps (Google Contacts Help).

Which contact-import route should you use?

These are contact-import workflows, not general-purpose SIM viewers. Apple’s and Google’s instructions do not promise support for every card and phone combination.

Why might no contacts appear?
- The contacts were not saved to the SIM. They may instead be on the old phone or associated with an account. Apple notes that import depends on how the previous phone stored the contacts.
- The card or phone combination is unsupported. Confirm that the old SIM is inserted and consult the phone maker or carrier if the import option is missing or the card is not recognized.
- You are looking in the wrong place. Check the old phone’s contacts and any accounts used to sync them; an empty SIM import does not by itself show that contacts were deleted.
Can you view all SIM files or identifiers?
No. The ordinary contacts screen and the import options described above are for contacts, not a full inventory of SIM records or network credentials. Android Developers says ordinary app access to the ICC ID has been restricted since Android 10, with further restrictions beginning in Android 11 (Android Developers). The ICC ID is globally unique and non-resettable, so do not post it publicly. For account-specific SIM information, contact your mobile carrier.
