Activision is developing the next Halo title, but Xbox has not announced its name, format, story, release date or platforms. The assignment comes with a new team separate from Activision’s Call of Duty work; Halo Studios will continue supporting existing games and the community.
What has Xbox confirmed about the next Halo?
In its September 22, 2026 announcement, Xbox said Activision will develop the next Halo title through a “new, purpose-built team” separate from ongoing development and plans for Call of Duty. That confirms the developer assignment and team arrangement, not the game’s design.

The announcement does not identify the title, describe its genre, story or format, give a release window, or name platforms. It also does not say whether the new game will connect to Halo Infinite or any other existing entry. Those details are not established by the announcement.

Activision’s stated ambition, quoted in a September 2026 GamesRadar+ report, is to make “the greatest Halo game ever” while remaining true to what players love about the series. That is an aspiration, not a description of specific creative choices or a release commitment.

What happens to Halo Studios and Halo Infinite?
Xbox said a small team at Halo Studios will keep supporting the Halo community and games already in market. The announcement does not specify the team’s size, duties for each game, or how long that support will continue.
Separately, Halo’s official esports update said Halo Infinite would receive support and some online and LAN competition in 2026. It also said official Halo Championship Series competition would not return with a new title during 2026. This describes the plan announced for that year; it does not promise support beyond 2026.
What Halo can you play now?
Xbox’s June 7, 2026 Showcase recap said Halo: Campaign Evolved launched on July 28, 2026, for Xbox, Steam and PlayStation. It was available on day one through Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass, and Xbox also noted a Collector’s Edition.
Campaign Evolved is a concrete recent Halo release, but its launch details do not establish what Activision’s next title will be. The announcement does not link the two projects or say that they share a development direction.

How do the earlier Unreal Engine 5 plans fit in?
In a 2024 Halo Studios announcement, the studio said it was working on multiple projects with Unreal Engine 5. It described Project Foundry as research and training, “Neither a game nor a tech demo.”
That information predates Xbox’s September 2026 organizational change. It does not establish whether those earlier projects continued, moved to another team or were cancelled. Nor does the 2024 post identify the next Activision-led game as one of those projects.
What did the 2026 restructuring say about job cuts?
Xbox’s September 22 announcement said 268 roles were being eliminated across Halo Studios, other first-party studios, and Xbox Game Studios management and central functions. It did not give a Halo Studios-only figure, so the total cannot be treated as the number of Halo developers affected.
