Square Enix’s stated upgrade is improved resolution and frame rate compared with the Nintendo Switch versions. They are separate purchases under the publisher’s current policy: no upgrade pack is planned, saves do not transfer between console versions, and neither edition runs on the original Switch.
What is new in the Switch 2 editions?
Improved resolution and frame rate
Square Enix says both Switch 2 versions have improved resolution and frame rate over their Nintendo Switch counterparts. The official listings do not specify numerical resolution or frame-rate targets, separate docked and handheld figures, or a particular performance mode. Release date
Nintendo lists October 1, 2026 as the release date for both Switch 2 editions: OCTOPATH TRAVELER and OCTOPATH TRAVELER II.

The official descriptions do not identify new story content exclusive to the Switch 2 releases. In particular, mechanics described for OCTOPATH TRAVELER II are features of the game; the listing does not present them as additions made specifically for this port.

What happens to your Switch copy and save?
There is no planned upgrade pack
Square Enix says it has no plans to sell an upgrade pack that converts the Nintendo Switch edition into the Switch 2 edition. Under that stated policy, anyone who wants the Switch 2 version should treat it as a separate product rather than a free or paid upgrade to an existing Switch copy.
Saves do not transfer between console versions
Nintendo says save data is incompatible between the Switch and Switch 2 versions of each game. For OCTOPATH TRAVELER II, Nintendo also says saves from the Prologue Demo are incompatible with the Switch 2 version. Plan to start a new save if you move to the Switch 2 edition.

The Switch 2 versions require Switch 2 hardware
Nintendo’s listings state that each Switch 2 release is compatible only with Nintendo Switch 2 and cannot be played on the original Nintendo Switch. The compatibility notices appear on the listings for the first game and the sequel.

OCTOPATH TRAVELER
The first game follows eight travelers in Orsterra. Its turn-based battles revolve around finding enemies’ weaknesses, breaking their defenses, and spending Boost Points strategically. The Switch 2 edition’s officially stated change is the improved resolution and frame rate; the product description does not announce a new Switch 2 story or a change to the game’s basic identity.
OCTOPATH TRAVELER II
The sequel follows eight new travelers in Solistia and continues the series’ HD-2D presentation, job and skill development, and Break and Boost combat system, while adding mechanics as part of the game. Nintendo’s product page says the first installment was initially released in 2018 and reports that OCTOPATH TRAVELER II has sold over 3 million copies worldwide; it does not specify the year for that sales figure. These are details about the sequel, not evidence of Switch 2-exclusive additions.
