It also added extension points and a reusable UI library that connected the visual refresh to Storybook’s addon ecosystem.
What changed in the Storybook 5.0 interface?
The redesign addressed both how Storybook looked and how developers moved through its workspace. The official Storybook 5.0 release overview and launch post describe a set of coordinated changes rather than a single visual refresh.

| Area | What Storybook 5.0 introduced |
|---|---|
| Appearance | Hand-crafted light and dark themes, with an API for theme customization. |
| Story navigation | A redesigned sidebar intended to make it more intuitive to move among stories. |
| Canvas controls | A toolbar that gave addon controls a more visible, discoverable place. Viewport, Backgrounds, and A11y were examples. |
| Addon workspace | A redesigned addons panel that users could show or hide and orient differently. |
| Keyboard and URLs | User-configurable keyboard shortcuts and a new URL structure that eliminated long strings of query parameters. |
How did Storybook 5.0 change themes and addons?
Light and dark themes
Storybook 5.0 shipped with light and dark themes and a theme API for customization. The system was organized around core variables; authors who wanted deeper control could use the underlying Emotion theming API. These were customization tools, not a claim that every design-system need was already covered.

Toolbar and tab extension points
The canvas toolbar gave addon makers a place to put controls close to the story preview. The launch post names Viewport, Backgrounds, and A11y as integrations using the new Toolbar approach. Addons could also add tabs to the main stories panel; Notes was an example. Together, these integration points made it possible to put controls or alternate views in parts of the interface suited to them.

A redesigned addons panel
The panel itself was revised, with controls to show or hide it and change its orientation. This changed the workspace layout available to developers without implying a measured improvement in speed or usability.
Why did Storybook introduce @storybook/components?
Storybook 5.0 introduced @storybook/components, a reusable component library built with React and Emotion. The stated aims were to encourage reuse, document common use cases, support visual testing, and help addon developers build interfaces consistent with Storybook. The 2019 launch described a well-documented design system as a longer-term goal, not a completed solution to all design-system requirements.
What was the redesign intended to accomplish?
The official launch framed the overhaul as a response to user feedback accumulated since 2016. Dominic Nguyen designed the new UI; the announcement credits Norbert de Langen, Dominic Nguyen, Tom Coleman, Jessica Koch, Alexandre Bodin, and other contributors with implementation work. Storybook’s 2019 retrospective later characterized 5.0 as a complete UI overhaul that helped set the stage for Storybook as an open-source platform through theming and new addon integration methods.
The launch post reported more than 600 contributors, more than 34,000 GitHub stars, and more than 4.5 million monthly npm downloads at the time of its March 5, 2019 publication. These are historical figures reported by Storybook, not current counts or independent evidence that the redesign improved usability. The cited release materials do not provide a before-and-after usability study.

How to think about the 4.x-to-5.0 change
The practical difference is easiest to understand by looking at the areas the redesign touched: theme and customization choices, story navigation, addon discoverability and panel layout, keyboard control, and URL readability. The available release descriptions establish which features changed, but do not quantify resulting gains in speed, satisfaction, or task completion.
