ZoomEye can show network-visible services and product fingerprints associated with virtualization platforms, but its result counts are leads for investigation—not counts of vulnerable, compromised, or even directly reachable management interfaces. September 2026 posts reported thousands of Proxmox port matches and larger ESXi and Proxmox product-fingerprint totals; neither set of figures independently establishes which systems are publicly accessible, who owns them, or what versions they run.
What ZoomEye can—and cannot—tell you
ZoomEye’s API documentation describes searches across IPv4 and IPv6 devices and websites, with matches across protocols such as HTTP, SSH, and FTP. Its documented search and response fields include port, service, product, version, title, banner, IP, domain, URL, and update time. Global keyword matching can draw on data such as HTTP or HTTPS headers and bodies, SSL information, titles, and other protocol banners; precise matching and logical operators are also documented.
That breadth makes ZoomEye useful for finding clues about internet-visible infrastructure. It also means a result count depends on what was searched, how the query was interpreted, and when the underlying collection was made. A product fingerprint is not proof that a management interface is reachable. A responding port does not prove a vulnerable version. A search result does not establish ownership or compromise.

What the published September 2026 counts mean
The figures below are counts reported by two DEV Community authors describing ZoomEye queries. They are not independent measurements, and the posts do not establish a population-wide count of vulnerable hypervisors.
| Reported query | Reported results | What the source establishes—and what remains unknown |
|---|---|---|
port:8006 |
3,988 | kozhevniko’s September 17, 2026 post identifies port 8006 with the Proxmox VE web management interface. The post says its result count does not establish every host’s version, owner, or direct public reachability. Uniqueness and vulnerability are not established. Source |
title:"Proxmox" |
522,829 | The same post warns this broad title match is not a count of exposed hypervisors; it includes material such as documentation, tutorials, forums, and marketing pages. It does not establish management reachability, host uniqueness, version, or vulnerability. Source |
app="VMware ESXi" |
414,092 | yutianle’s post says this fingerprint query ran on September 20, 2026. The report does not independently verify direct management reachability, unique systems, ownership, versions, or vulnerability. Source |
app="Proxmox VE" |
140,746 | The same September 20, 2026 report describes this as an application-fingerprint result, not a verified count of publicly reachable management interfaces. Uniqueness, ownership, versions, and vulnerability are not established. Source |
app="vSphere" |
12,354 | The same post reports this result for September 20, 2026. It does not establish unique publicly reachable management systems or vulnerable hosts. Source |
The port query and broad title or product-fingerprint queries are not interchangeable. A port-scoped result is tied to a network service observation; a title match may reflect web content unrelated to a live hypervisor interface, while an application label is a fingerprint rather than a complete security assessment. The posts do not provide all the validation needed to turn any of these totals into a count of distinct, attributable, vulnerable systems.

Why management exposure matters
Virtualization management interfaces control infrastructure with significant privileges. If an unauthorized party can reach one, the potential consequences merit serious attention. But the cited ZoomEye reports do not show that every matching asset is exploitable, accessible without additional controls, or compromised. Exposure is a condition to validate, not a verdict about the host.
How defenders should validate findings
- Scope the search. Record the exact query, whether it is port-, service-, product-, or title-based, and the collection time. Do not treat a broad keyword or title result as a host count.
- Compare with your own inventory. Use authorized internal records to identify assets your organization owns or administers. A third-party fingerprint does not establish ownership.
- Verify reachability through authorized channels. Check the intended network path and access controls rather than inferring public management access from a product label or search result alone.
- Confirm version and configuration. Use authenticated administrative or inventory systems to determine the actual product version and management settings. A port response alone does not establish vulnerability.
- Remediate confirmed exposure and recheck. Restrict access according to operational needs, then verify through authorized monitoring that the intended change took effect.
The Proxmox-specific DEV Community author recommends keeping port 8006 off the public internet and adding a second factor where the interface cannot be moved. Those are recommendations from that post, not official vendor instructions in the cited material. Read the post.

What Broadcom recommends for ESXi management security
Broadcom’s official guidance applies to ESXi 7.0, 8.0, and later. It recommends using Strict Lockdown Mode to restrict direct access to the management interface, limiting firewall rules to essential services, and segregating management, vMotion, and data traffic. These controls address management access and network separation rather than the meaning of a ZoomEye result.
Broadcom also states, “Disabling packet forwarding is not a standard security best practice for ESXi,” and says ESXi “does not possess a supported parameter to toggle ‘packet forwarding’ as a hardening measure.” Do not treat disabling packet forwarding as the recommended hardening fix. See the Broadcom Knowledge Base guidance.

How to read future counts responsibly
- Keep the query attached to the number: port, product fingerprint, and title searches capture different kinds of observations.
- Keep the date attached to the number: internet search results can change as assets, services, and collected data change.
- Separate detection from validation: reachability, version, ownership, uniqueness, and vulnerability require evidence beyond a raw result total.
- Do not infer compromise: the cited counts do not show that a matching system has been breached.
